acid reflux
Just wondering if acid reflux can make your upper throat feel full and if it can make you feel like you are having food stuck in the back of your mouth (where the throat/mouth meet).
Does anyone have thie experience?
Also, do people find apple juice helps? I was told it does.
A: I have not found Apple Juice to work, however, depending on an indivuals diet it may.
I am not a doctor, so either way you will want to talk to them, but this is what I have to say as a long time sufferer of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.)!
Three part answer: information, what not to do, and what to do!
INFORMATION!!!!!!
I have a very severe case of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.). I have had to go to the hospital for some of the heartburn that I have had because the pain can become overwhelming or your breathing can be effected. It can be caused by Smoking, Drinking Beverages with caffeine (My case with hereditary), Drinking Beverages with Alcohol, Stress, Anxiety or can be Hereditary
The good thing about G.E.R.D. is that it can be a temporary thing and can be cured. It is never a permit thing even if you end up with it for the rest of your life it has the ability to be cured.
G.E.R.D. is caused by too much acid being created in your stomach. This can lead to or cause ulcers, esophagus damage, heartburn and/or damage in the mouth. . Other symptoms that can be found in a few cases are dizziness, tingling in limbs, numbness of Limbs, Chest/Back pain focused on the left side (in most cases), shortness/difficulty breathing, and a feeling as if you have food stuck in your throat.
WHAT NOT TO DO!!!!!!!!
In most cases, stress is a factor to the reflux if you watch what you eat and reduce some of the stress it will help. If you watch what you eat for about a week you should find relief, if you do not then that is when you definitely what to listen to the doctor. Things to watch for are as follows:
Fatty Foods
Citrus Foods
Oranges (Juice and fruit)
Lemon (Juice and fruit)
Foods That Contain Grease
Fried Foods
Potatoes (Starch)
Buffalo wings
Chocolate (including any Coco)
Caffeine
Smoking
Alcohol
Doughnuts
Brownies
Cake
Tomato Based Products
Lactose
Sour Cream
Cottage Cheese
High amounts of Carbohydrates
Roughage (Berries and Nuts)
Onions
WHAT TO DO!!!!
The two foods that I recommend is Black strap Molasses and Raw honey. The apple is better for night time reflux while these will work for just about all of it. What you will do is take about a tsp. of whatever one you chose. Molasses being the better because of strength and nutrition, but must be use to the taste. What the substance will do is stick to the sides of the esophagus and do two things, one is heal and the other is protect.
On the healing end, both substances have a healing property in them, and as they sit on the walls of the esophagus they will heal it. This is also helpful if you have a sore throat in the morning from refluxing.
On the protection end, both substances are high in sugar and when acid that is refluxed comes up to that the sugar will neutralize it and it will not longer be a problem at that point.
I would also look to putting Cinnamon and Ginger in you diet, they have been know to help with digestion and will help you reduce the amount of acid needed to brake down food, therefore causing you to reflux less.
Q: What kind of foods do you eat when you have acid reflux?
I just found out my acid reflux is triggering my asthma, and have to change my diet. I know what not to eat, but what should I eat?
A: do not eat spicy hot salted food fast food is a disaster all junk food is forbid en eat fresh fruits or vege yogurt helps the to decrease acidity also liquorice and orange peel and mint
Q: Which formula is best for infant with acid reflux and milk allergy?
I plan to supplement with formula next month when my baby will be 3 months old. He has acid reflux and is probably lactose-intolerant / possible milk allergy. Which formula is recommended ? I will be asking the pediatrician as well. But before I speak with him, I wanted to find out what is widely used so that I can ask him if I can use the same for my baby. Thanks in advance for your answers.
A: I would recommend buying a small can of whatever formula you are considering to see how he does with it before investing in a brand.
My son was born with a milk protein allergy, and initially the only formula I could use with him was one called Neocate. It’s usually only available in specialty pharmacies or by mail, and generally costs about $35 for 14 oz. of powder. I used to purchase it in bulk off of ebay from parents who were unloading what they had left after their kids outgrew the allergy, and often was able to get it for under $20 per can. I would not use this formula unless you know that the less expensive ones won’t work for him. In our case, though, it was a Godsend, because my baby couldn’t even handle Alimentum the first few months; and although he did fine on breast milk once I eliminated all dairy products from my diet, I simply couldn’t produce enough to keep up with the demand.
After several months I was able to switch him to Similac Alimentum, which is about $25 for a 1 lb. can. I used to buy unopened cases of that off of ebay also, usually for between $12 and 15 per can (these prices include shipping).
By 10 months I was able to very slowly transition him to Similac Advance, as he outgrew the allergy fairly early.
ADDITIONAL INFO:
Please, before considering any soy-based formula, read this article: http://www.mothering.com/articles/growing_child/food/soy_story.html Here is a very small excerpt:
“A crucial time for the programming of the human reproduction system is right after birth-the very time when bottles of soy formula are given to many non-breastfed babies. Normally during this period, the body surges with natural estrogens, testosterones, and other hormones that are meant to program the baby’s reproductive development from infancy through puberty and into adulthood. For infants on soy formula, this programming may be interrupted.68-70
Male infants experience a testosterone surge during the first few months of life and produce androgens in amounts equal to those of adult men. So much testosterone at such a tender age is needed to program the body for puberty, the time when a male’s sex organs should develop and he should begin to express male characteristics such as facial and pubic hair and a deep voice. If receptor sites intended for the hormone testosterone are occupied by soy estrogens, however, appropriate development may never take place.
. . . in the years since soy formula has been in the marketplace, parents and pediatricians have reported growing numbers of boys whose physical maturation is either delayed or does not occur at all. Breasts, underdeveloped gonads, undescended testicles (cryptorchidism), and steroid insufficiencies are increasingly common. Sperm counts are also falling.”
Q: How to get rid of alcohol related acid reflux?
Nearly everytime I drink vodka I get acid reflux/ heartburn what can I do to prevent this or get rid of it once it already start hurting? And not drinkingis not an option because I already know that.
A: Why is not drinking not an option? If you’re already having acid reflux, it won’t go away by switching to a different alcoholic drink. All alcohol is extremely high in sugar and that can cause the heartburn. If you ignore the reflux, you can permanently damage your eusophagus, requiring surgery and a synthetic replacement of it. You can also get ulcers from constant reflux and heartburn. Untreated, ulcers can rupture and you risk highly dangerous internal bleeding and damage to other organs or your heart if your stomach lining ulcerates and the stomach acid comes into contact with other organs. You could end up in a preventable life or death situation and emergency surgery to repair the damage if possible. There is No alcohol worth the health risks. Be stronger willed than your urges. Get a grip and find something healthy to spend your money on.
Q: How long untill my acid reflux is gone?
I’ve been having acid reflux for about 3 months now i believe. Whenever i run i begin to cough. Before i would start coughing while doing any type of physical movements. Although, i’ve been taking Prilosec. I think I am getting better. I havent been coughing as much so thats good. However I’m afraid to run because I want it to get better.
Please help me with some info.
A: Hello…it IS your diet .
Q: What are some good foods to eat or beverages to drink when you have acid reflux?
I am currently taking an acid reflux medication for the next 6 weeks. However, I am curious if there are any beneficial foods that will also help? My throat is closing up a lot lately, and although I have eliminated my caffeine intake, it is still bothering me.
A: the problem with reflux is putting anything in your stomach will cause it to worsen. Suggest you be careful about eating smaller amounts more frequently, remain sitting upright for at least thirty minutes after eating or drinking, no flopping on the couch with snacks, or eating just before bed. Make gravity your friend. Before bed take some maalox to coat your esophagus.
Q: Why does acid reflux feel like drinking too much tequila?
May sound weird, but it feels this way for me. Like a cool burning feeling in my stomach. I hate it. Does anyone else with acid reflux feel this way? Also what OTC drugs are available to treat acid reflux. My doctor reccomended Zantac, but it doesn’t seem to be working. Any help would be greatly appreciated; thanks in advance.
A: you should definitely go to the doctor to take the right medicine, but being in pain is not good for you it can make it worse.until you go to your doctor try to take prilosec once a day before dinner, this is an over counter pills. try to avoid eating acidic food or drinks like orange juice ….,also avoid to much coffee, alcohol, chili food.all i can tell you is in this website : http://www.purplepill.com/acid-reflux-disease/index.aspx .hope you feel better soon.
Q: What is the best way/medicine to help Acid Reflux?
I have acid reflux, and I am currently taking Prilosec OTC.
It doesn’t seem to help, as I am getting alot of liquid in my mouth (even after I take the medicine).
So, what is the BEST medicine or way to help my acid reflux?
A: I used to get a lot of acid reflux and it was made worse by taking antacids and also by very cold water and drinking before lying down. There is a simple way to fix it if you get it and it sounds crazy, but you drink a spoonful of cider vinegar. It really works. To avoid further acid reflux, eating carbohydrates and proteins seperately works for me. It also normalises your weight, you gain if too thin, lose if too fat.
Try the book “Food combining for health” If you need to see how it works in mor detail. Good luck getting off medication.
Q: What kind of tests for Acid Reflux do they do for Babies?
My 5 month old was just diagnosed with acid reflux. She has a prescription that I give her 3 times a day in her formula to help settle her stomach. She hasnt been sleeping since shes been born so im hoping that this is the right diagnosis. Her Dr said she has to go for tests at the childrens hospital but I was wondering what kind of test it is and if its harmful to her in anyway?
A: My son had Acid reflux and I asked my dr. about testing and she told me that they really don’t do testing for acid reflux they try different formulas and try the baby zantac and if that doesn’t help their is further testing to check for other problems. The formula that my doctor gave me was Enfamil Nutramigen it is a hypoallergenic infant formula designed for babies who experience colic symptoms due to cow’s milk protein allergy. On top of the Zantac and He did so much better.
He did grow out of it..When he turned a year I started him on Regular Milk and he did just fine.
Here are some fact I found online and a link to that page…
‘Reflux’ Baby Formula
Pediatricians have long advised that parents of infants with reflux thicken their baby’s formula. You do this by adding one tablespoon of rice cereal for every ounce or two of formula your baby drinks.
In addition to being thicker, so it hopefully stays down better, babies may be able to drink a little less at a time, since this mixture has more calories than standard formula.
Two baby formulas are available that may help kids with reflux so that you don’t have to add cereal on your own. These include Enfamil AR (added rice) and Similac Sensitive RS (rice starch).
Some experts also recommend that children with reflux have a trial of an elemental formula, such as Nutramigen or Alimentum, for a few weeks, in case the reflux is a sign of a milk protein allergy.
Acid Reflux Medications
Even with lifestyle changes and reflux baby formulas, the mainstay of reflux treatments are reflux medications.
These acid reflux medications for children include antacids and acid reducers such as:
Antacids (very short-term use)
Maalox
Mylanta
Histamine-2 receptor antagonists
Zantac
Axid
Pepcid
Tagamet
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs)
Prevacid
Prilosec
Nexium
Aciphex
Protonix
Other medications include Reglan, bethanechol, and erythromycin, which are described as prokinetic agents. These medicines can actually help the stomach empty faster, but are not used as much because they tend to have a lot of side effects.
Keep in mind that Zantac is the only acid reflux medication that is FDA approved to treat reflux in infants. Other medications are often used off-label for younger children though, including Axid and Prevacid.
EDIT:: I found another helpful web page that has info on testing for Reflux

Q: What is the best way to reduce spit up in 2 month old baby with acid reflux?
No matter how many burps she has, my daughter is still spitting up a lot after some feeds. Pediatrician diagnosed acid reflux and said to keep her upright. It seems to bother her, especially the really big ones. Any tips appreciated.
sorry, I meant to mention she is stricty breastfed.
A: Tell her Pediatrician again, you may need to switch formula’s. My friend is currently going through the same thing with her 2 week old.
Just keep switching formula’s until you can find one that she can handle. Also, try reducing how much she takes in before you burp her. Maybe cut back a few ounces then burp her, give her a few more, burp her…. you get the drift.
I had the same problem when I was a baby (back in ‘81 lol) and my mom had to keep switching and keep switching and keep switching. Nothing worked. Finally an old lady told her that she might could switch to goats milk and it’d clear it up.
Sure enough, I was raised from 2 months old until I was off the bottle on goats milk. The only down side (my mom story lol) is when I got hot, I smelled like a goat LOL.
But ask around (I know that’s what you’re here for lol). Ask other moms you know and keep telling her doctor what’s going on.
Just stay ontop of it, it sounds like you’re doing a wonderful job as it is. Good luck!
Okay so I just read your additional info. I don’t know what to tell you about breast milk. Try what the lady said above, pump the milk then add that.. stuff to it. Or you just may have to switch to formula. I know breast milk is healthier but it’s healthir for your baby not to spit up everything she’s just eaten.
Q: What are good foods to eat to help remedy and keep hearburn ( acid reflux ) at bay?
What are good foods / drinks to have when you have acid reflux / heartburn?
Also are there natural cures, instead of meds?
A: Drew,
There are plenty of excellent natural remedies out there which could definitely help you achieve your goal. But let me suggest you first to try to reason and find the true cause of your heartburn or acid reflux. If you do so and remove the cause, you’ll be free for ever. Otherwise you’ll only mask the problem to find yourself not to long after with the same condition or worse.
Acid reflux is a defensive mechanism of the stomach which characterizes for an abnormal acid output. The main reason for this is the overwhelming amount–or constant management–of food by the stomach. Other reasons include: eating several meals a day, or snacking; drinking liquids with foods; overeating; late supper; over-cooked foods; low quality fats; etc.
Correct the issues mentioned above, give your stomach a brake by fasting for 1-2 days on papaya and/or apples, and then use these simple but powerful remedies:
Mix 1 teaspoon of each of these herbs (freshly cut) and put them to boil for 5 minutes, and let it seat for a while:
Oregano
Basil
Peppermint
Fig’s leaves
Sweeten it with a little honey or Agave Nectar. And add 20-25 drops of Licorice root extract to this tea. Drink 2-3 cups a day. And, DON’T EAT ANY FRIED FOODS WHATSOEVER! Milk and cheese should be avoided if you want a permanent fix.
FOODS TO AVOID
Milk, cheese, eggs, soda, refined foods (white bread, white sugar, white flour, etc.), vinegar, coffee, chocolate, sardines, very starchy foods, red beans (too high in nitrogen content), ice cream, onion, pickles, roasted nuts or seeds, and black/red pepper.
FOODS TO ENJOY
Apple, papaya, pears, sweet grapes (no the green one), figs (no dried), asparagus, sweet tomatoes, mango, cabbage (excellent to regenerate the stomach’s linen), steamed broccoli, garlic, ginger, raw nuts (specially almonds), artichoke, brown rice, olive oil (extra virgin and first cold press), and carrot.
This is easy to do, effective, and affordable!
I already know the results…
Good luck!
Q: What formula is best when you have a gassy baby with possible acid reflux?
My little girl is 5 weeks old and is gassy. She is a pretty good baby otherwise but sometimes when she spits up it comes out of her nose. Sometimes she regurgatates the bottle but very unfreqently. She also sometimes sounds like she is gurgling? She is such a good trooper though, she rarely cries at all and easts about every 3 hours. I have tried the mylicon drops and they seem to work only for a short period of time. My baby’’s doctor has put her on medicaine for acid reflux and told me to switch the formula to Nutramingin. When I did this after 2 days she seemed worse than ever. I put her back on Good start but have keep her on meds. I dont know what to do with her now. Is there a better formula anyone has tried with a baby with these symptoms. Can you really go by what the formula says it is for on the label. Why wouldnt Soy be recommended for gas/fussiness by doctors instead of putting them on meds and saying its acid reflux. Help!!
A: I would suggest Enfamil Gentlease. My daughter was very gassy and this formula helped a lot. It is no more expensive than the other brands either. The pediatrician put her on soy for a while but I wasn’t crazy about that (it stinks plus I read some controversial articles on soy formula being linked to ADD… don’t take my word for that though… research it if you think Soy would be best of your baby). After we tried the soy I put her back on regular formula and the gas and spitting up only came back. That’s when my mom happened upon the Enfamil Gentlease. We were traveling and ran out of formula. The first store we could find didn’t have the regular Enfamil so we gave that a try. It worked wonders for her! I kept her on that until she was 11 months then I switched to the Next Step Lipil for a month or so and now she’s on whole milk with no problems.
Q: Acid reflux, what causes it and how do I fix it?
I have like a heart burn type deal like everyday, and my stomach is always a little unsettled. I assume that it’s acid reflux, since I have been diagnosed with it before. However, I don’t have insurance right now and won’t for a little while. So, any home remedies besides taking tums?
A: i have acid reflux. . . and restrictin food’s doesn’t really help
i have had it my whole life
eat regularly. . . going a long tym without eating causes a build up of acid in the stomach
when you feel it coming on eat food that are plain e.g. bread, rice in otherwords high in carbs
greasy food’s wont help it
use rennie tablets when you feel it comng on
there is no cure for it. . .sorry
EDIT- milk, any milky substances help because they are basic i.e. not acidic they reduce the acid
Q: I recently incurred Acid Reflux does anyone know a natural remedy at home or I can buy to help?
