acid reflux after eating oatmeal

A: Did you give your presriptioins time to kick in? Most times it will take at LEAST one week for your body to get the chemicals through so they work their best.

I had really bad morning sickness too.. honestly the bnest thing you can do (it’s really hard) is to keep food in your stomach, no matter how gross you feel or how bad you think it smells EAT SOMETHING. As long as there is food in your tummy, it won’t feel as sick as it does when it is empty. Zantac is safe in pregnancy, I was prescribed it for my acid reflux, you can also buy this over the counter.. you should ask your doctor if it could help you out.

Q: should my 3 month old be eating yet? I know it is a repeat but yahoo was messing up. Please Help!?
my baby boy is 3 months old ( a little over) I have WIC and they have little meetings. They told me in the meeting that he should start eating cereal and oatmeal and in about a month try stage 1 baby foods. I’ve been trying all week to get him to eat. He doesn’t want to open his mouth (which was the same problem that made me stop brest feeding) but he acts like it’s so weird. He does really good about swallowing most of it, but after a few bites he just starts crying like crazy. Does anyone have any tips for me about teaching him how to eat? I’m tempted to put the cereal in his bottle. He also has acid reflux, so when I asked his pediatrician she said that feeding him would be a good idea because it will help him hold acid down. (plus he’s hungry all the time =p ) What would you do in my position?
also just curious.. some of you are saying don’t do any types of solids u ntil 6 months.. so why on the stage 2 baby foods it says 6 months plus?? .. I defiently would not start him on a stage two.. so I asume that my dr. is correct in saying that it will not hurt him if I start feeding him now.

A: I started feeding my son rice cereal at 4 months old. I mixed it with his formula (you can use breast milk too) and made it very very runny. They have to get use to a thicker texture. I only gave him like 1 tablespoon of the cereal. (once you mix it with the milk it will be more). Don’t force him, he may not be ready. A lot of times baby don’t like the taste so just keep trying a little bit each time. I have heard that it can help with acid reflux also. I think 3 months is a little early tho. I would wait until about 4 months to even start the cereal. I would just work on the cereal for about a month before I even tried any other type of baby food. WIC is just giving suggestions he is your baby and you know what is best for him. In a couple of months when you start the stage 1 baby foods make sure you only do the same type of food for an entire week so you can check for any allergies. Don’t mix and match because you won’t know what caused the allergy if he has one. Once you start the fruits and veggies you can add a tablespoon or so to the cereal and gradually make the cereal a little thicker. That’s what I did. Just go with he flow of your baby because all babies are different. Good luck!

Q: Oatmeal Cereal for a 7 week old?
My baby has turned 7 weeks old today. Since he was a week old hes has Acid Reflux pretty bad. I went through 4 formulas (found the right one finally) for other things he was going through like very bad cramps and gas, not to mention constipation and bouts of diarrhea. After all that has cleared, the acid reflux has stayed. I have spoken to his doctor, and also got a second opinion, that both said a tablespoon of prepared oatmeal cereal will do him no harm and help with the reflux. I have been giving it to him by spoon (which he LOVES) and it really has worked. For the last two days he has been OK. He eats well and is a good size for his age and is already holding his head up on his own. He is 12lbs 3 Oz as of yesterday and 24 inches long.
My main question is that is anyone else out there doing this? Has this helped with no side effects? Ive always heard cereal too early isn’t great on bellies, but he seems better. Would be nice to hear other moms stories to ease my mind.

A: Since your child was a “hearty” eater since day one your doctors probably figured the cereal couldn’t do him any harm and usually they are right about this sort of thing. They started my daughter early on cereals because she tolerated her formula better than most and was a pretty good “eater” herself. Stick with what the doctors have told you if his refulx is abated of course if there are problems you will want to consult the doctor. But follow through.

Q: Does this sound like a possible ulcer?
symptoms:

-when i vomit, i get dizzy and see white spots/ stars
fyi- i’ve looked up symptoms on a bunch of possible causes, so just wondering what you guys think it could be
thanks in advance!

A: Have you seen your doctor? Yes, ulcer is a possibility, but not the only one.

Q: why are my symptoms not consistent with my diagnosis?
I am a 53 year-old working housewife. Last January, the whole family made a trip out of town. My son and I ate something the others did not. Both of us got sick the next day, diarrhea and vomiting consistent with food poisoning. We were given the same medication; my son got better after 4 days while it’s been 4 weeks for me but my bowel movements still have not gotten back to normal. I don’t have the diarrhea anymore, just soft, unformed stool. Two weeks after the diarrhea episode, I got the flu- fever, coughing, body aches. A week after that, I woke up feeling really sick to my stomach. I was dizzy, nauseated, lots of stomach cramping and gas rumbling. In addition, I was very tired and was having chills. I went to the ER and was diagnosed with diarrhea (which I did not really have anymore) and just “virus” infection and was given Bentyl. The next day, I had a follow-up check with my primary doctor and was given flagyl and diarrhea medicine. He said it was “just virus” I stopped taking the flagyl after 2 days because I was getting more sick in the stomach. My doctor changed my medicine to Nexium, saying I had a lot of acid reflux. Nexium gave me headaches and made the dizziness and nausea worse, so I stopped it after 3 days. I went to see my ENT doctor because I could not sleep at night from post nasal drip and dry mouth and throat. I had redness in my throat and again, he concluded acid reflux and virus. He prescribed saline irrigation and changed my med. to Xantax. Again, the headache reaction was there and Xantax did not really help. I also consulted with a GI doctor and he ordered testing for TSH and H. pylori plus an abdominal/pelvic CT scan. All turned out negative so I was diagnosed again with acid reflux and “virus” that just won’t go away. I made another trip to the ER because I was getting weaker everyday and my blood pressure was spiking (145-150 over 90-100). I was scared. Blood test showed my Potassium was low (3.0), I was given 2 bags of IV and 40 mg. of potassium tablets. Went back to my primary doctor complaining of the same thing, dull headache, dizziness, and nausea especially in the morning. Convinced my doctor that my blood pressure was probably aggravating my symptoms, he gave me Toprol (50 mg) once a day. There are tell-tale signs that Toprol is working, in addition to my nausea, the med. now makes me sleepy and sluggish. There is improvement in my legs from potassium but my symptoms are still here and it has been 3 weeks since I was diagnosed with virus and acid reflux. I do have acid reflux as my ENT doctor saw thickening in my larynx, however, I don’t have the burning sensation as most sufferers do, just a lot of belching and stomach gas. My diet consists of rice, lean boiled chicken, oatmeal, crackers, ginger tea, yogurt, and I am also taking probiotics. I have missed work for 3 weeks now because I can’t get up in the morning. Some days are better and I would conclude that I’ve been healed but the next day, I would be sick again, my symptoms come and go. Today, I saw an eye doctor but he did not find anything wrong with my eyes. I am desperate for a cure, I am tired of being sick, I am depressed and frustrated. Please help me. Thank you.

A: Your situation is far too complicated for me to even guess. I do mention that it was interesting to me that as I read your question and saw Flagyl giardiasis immediately came to mind. Some years ago everybody in my family but me got it and they were given Flagyl.

Since Formerly Bob thinks the symptoms match and a doctor prescribed Flagyl it may be of some importance. You said that the doctor who prescribed the Flagyl said “just virus,” but I find that unlikely that he thought that or he would not have prescribed Flagyl.

Ironically some years after, my wife and I were prescribed Flagyl for a yeast infection of unknown source. The stuff made both of us nearly sick with weird headaches and stomach distress, but we took them all just as my wife and sons did with the giardiasis. In both cases, in spite of the discomfort, it worked. Maybe you should pick back up taking the rest of the prescription since nothing else seems to work…

I am so sorry this is happening to you and fully understand why you feel depressed and frustrated. I pray you get better quickly. Try the Flagyl and have faith that it will all work out.

Q: 4 month old solids? **LONG, SORRY*?
Ok, I have a biiiig baby. He is 4 months old, weighs 19 lbs and is 28 inches long. (His dad is 6′4 and uncle is 6′7!) He has reflux and is currently on prevacid since he was 8 weeks old. His pediatrician told us to add a tablespoon of rice to each bottle, and we’ve been doing so since he was 8 weeks. Lately he has been getting hungry every 3 1/2 hours. He usually goes 4-5 hours between bottles and eats 6-8 oz each time.

Anyway for the last 3 days he has been eating 8 oz every 3 1/2 hours. He sleeps 8-10 hours at night and 2 hour long naps during the day. He’s taking in anywhere between 32-40 oz of formula a day.

SO my question is, how do i get him to like cereal? His formula alone is not satisfying him anymore. Is it bad for him to be drinking 8 oz every 3 hours? His reflux seems to be doing better, and we are waiting on solids (besides the cereals) because he has a milk sensitivity and I don’t want it to be too harsh on his system since his dad was sensitive to the acids in baby food.

Every time I have tried to feed him off the spoon, he starts getting mad. Even if it is really watery. I have tried oatmeal and rice, with formula AND with water, he just doesn’t like it. I’ve tried it before a bottle (which makes him cry and doesnt work) and after a bottle (which he hates) There’s no stopping him once he starts so I can’t try half way through.

How did you get your babies interested? Or is it just a time thing? If him eating so much formula isn’t bad at all then I’m fine with waiting. I wanted to wait until he was 6 months or older to start solids to begin with, but he is so big. :/

A: The size of a baby has no real bearing on when he is ready to add solids to his intake of breast milk or formula. Considering the tiny size of your baby’s tummy, waiting 4-5 hours between feedings is actually a bit unusual since needing to fill up again every 3-4 hours is much more common. In fact, eating 8 ounces every 3 hours at 4 months old is pretty normal. You could even up the quantity to 9 ounces per bottle at his weight. Especially since he has acid reflux as well as family history of food problems waiting to offer all types of solids may be best for his little developing tummy. I suggest you skip the solids for right now. Continue to add 1 TBS rice cereal to his bottles for the reflux and don’t worry if he wants to eat 8-10 ounces every 3 hours. That’s fine.
