Q: oatmeal is good for acid reflux ?
oatmeal is good for acid reflux ?

A: Oatmeal will not affect it negatively, but if it contains Cinnamon then it will be very positive for you. Here is some information that may help you to understand the condition a bit better.

I am not a doctor, so either way you will want to talk to them, but this is what I have to say as a long time sufferer of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.)!

Three part answer: information, what not to do, and what to do!

INFORMATION!!!!!!
I have a very severe case of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.). I have had to go to the hospital for some of the heartburn that I have had because the pain can become overwhelming or your breathing can be effected. It can be caused by Smoking, Drinking Beverages with caffeine (My case), Drinking Beverages with Alcohol, or can be Hereditary

The good thing about G.E.R.D. is that it can be a temporary thing and can be cured. It is never a permit thing even if you end up with it for the rest of your life it has the ability to be cured.

G.E.R.D. is caused by too much acid being created in your stomach. This can lead to or cause ulcers, esophagus damage, heartburn and/or damage in the mouth. . Other symptoms that can be found in a few cases are dizziness, tingling in limbs, numbness of Limbs, Chest/Back pain focused on the left side (in most cases), and shortness/difficulty breathing.

WHAT NOT TO DO!!!!!!!!
In most cases, stress is a factor to the reflux if you watch what you eat and reduce some of the stress it will help. If you watch what you eat for about a week you should find relief, if you do not then that is when you definitely what to listen to the doctor. Things to watch for are as follows:

Fatty Foods
Citrus Foods
Foods That Contain Grease
Fried Foods
Chocolate (including any Coco)
Caffeine
Smoking
Alcohol
Tomato Based Products
Lactose
Roughage (Berries and Nuts)
Onions

WHAT TO DO!!!!
The two foods that I recommend is Black strap Molasses and Raw honey. The apple is better for night time reflux while these will work for just about all of it. What you will do is take about a tsp. of whatever one you chose. Molasses being the better because of strength and nutrition, but must be use to the taste. What the substance will do is stick to the sides of the esophagus and do two things, one is heal and the other is protect.
On the healing end, both substances have a healing property in them, and as they sit on the walls of the esophagus they will heal it. This is also helpful if you have a sore throat in the morning from refluxing.
On the protection end, both substances are high in sugar and when acid that is refluxed comes up to that the sugar will neutralize it and it will not longer be a problem at that point.

I would also look to putting Cinnamon and Ginger in you diet, they have been know to help with digestion and will help you reduce the amount of acid needed to brake down food, therefore causing you to reflux less.

Q: If you have GERD, (Acid Reflux) Can you eat cereal, Like Special K and Oatmeal Crisp?
I am a big cereal eater but I haven’t in the last few days since I realized I have GERD (Acid Reflux), I know those cereal have quite a bit of sugar and they say that sugar makes GERD worse…Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)

A: Those are good cereals. Not too much sugar. Don’t lay down for at least a half hour after eating. Also, any good doctor who gives you the GERD diagnosis should have told you to raise the head of your bed 6 inches. It’ll make all the difference in the world.
Bless you and good luck!! :)

Q: What is the best possible food to eat at night that won’t trigger acid reflux?
I’m thinking oatmeal?

A: People are different and late night meals should be avoided. No spicy or greasy foods or heavy processed foods.Zantac works if you do get it….and some Ginger Ale or carbonated beverage that is sugar/caffeine free. Crackers/bread for a snack if hungry…no fatty foods are Mickey D’s.

A study conducted by the Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia found that sleeping on you left side is the best way to avoid nighttime heartburn. Sleeping on your right side may increase your heartburn symptoms because the acid takes longer to clear out of your esophagus when you lay on your right side. While sleeping on your back can allow acid to slip back into your esophagus more often, sleeping with your head elevated, such as on a wedge pillow, will allow gravity to keep the acid in your stomach. Raise the front of your bed and lose weight will help too.

Q: what stops acid reflux?
my 5 month old preemie has been diagnosed with acid reflux. he was on zantac, but he spit that up. now he is on axid and he is spitting it up too. his pediatrician won’t send him to a gi doctor. i thicken his milk until it is like oatmeal and he doesn’t spit up as much ,but i don’t want to get him constipated. i have tried soy, enfamil gentlelease, and a.r., but he throws that up too. as soon as he finishes a bottle he gets gassy and fussy and the acid from the vomit is making his mouth and lips raw.

A: Acid reflux in Children
Studies* show that GERD is common and may be overlooked in infants and children. It can cause repeated vomiting, coughing, and other respiratory problems. Children’s immature digestive systems are usually to blame, and most infants grow out of GERD by the time they are 1 year old. Still, you should talk to your child’s doctor if the problem occurs regularly and causes discomfort. Your doctor may recommend simple strategies for avoiding reflux, like burping the infant several times during feeding or keeping the infant in an upright position for 30 minutes after feeding. If your child is older, the doctor may recommend avoiding

sodas that contain caffeine
chocolate and peppermint
spicy foods like pizza
acidic foods like oranges and tomatoes
fried and fatty foods
Avoiding food 2 to 3 hours before bed may also help. The doctor may recommend that the child sleep with head raised. If these changes do not work, the doctor may prescribe medicine for your child. In rare cases, a child may need surgery.

On a personal Note: I would want to know your babies pH? You would want to be a 7.0. A very acidic pH can cause all kinds of health issues.
Contact me, if you’d like a couple test strips.
Hug that baby for me!

Q: My son has acid reflux really bad does anyone know what the best formula to give him ?
He is currently on Enfamil (Gentlease Lipil) he has already been on nutramigen, prosobe, and enfamil w/iron.His reflux is really bad he takes 2 tsp for every (oz) of oatmeal cereal in his bottles. The doctor had just switched him from rice to oatmeal anyone with any thoughts I would appreciate them.He has suffered acid reflux since (3 weeks) old I feel really bad for him because he has bad days and goes without eating for 23 hours. He has been on (prevacid) since (6 weeks) old
My son is currently 12 weeks old (3 months)
My son is currently 12 weeks old (3 months)

A: Have you consittered relactating? I don’t know how old your baby is, but you would have a very good shot at it if the babe is younger than 4 months.

Breastmilk is very easily digested, and you can actually modify your diet to fit your childs needs (say, if dairy makes the reflux worse, or something like that)

You have an excellent shot at relactating. It won’t be easy, but its possible. Heres some info to check out: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/adopt/index.html

The other thing i thought of is Neocate. Basically it goes:
Regular dairy formula: Contains full lenth dairy proteins

Predigested (nutramigen): Contains already broken down dairy proteins

Neocate: Contains no proteins at all, only amino acids.

Its super-duper expensive stuff. Ask your doctor about it. You would probably want to attempt relactation at the same time, so that after you start producing milk, you wouldnt need to buy as much formula, KWIM?

Either way, i hope your litle guy starts feeling better soon. It’s so hard to see them in pain.

Q: Is oatmeal good for an upset stomach?
I have a nervous stomach and I also get acid reflux a friend told me to eat oatmeal at least 2 times a day can anybody comment on this?

A: no oatmeal don’t help. Get your doctor to get you Nexium. That is what works.

Q: Experienced Moms with baby with Acid Reflux only please!!!!!!?
My son just turned 4 months. His Acid Reflux has peaked very bad. Projectile vomiting with every feeding, not gaining weight, wheezing, screaming and crying, not getting enough fluids, etc. I just asked a question about cereal in the bottle and all the response were, its bad, its not recommended. I was just asking about switching, I do not want people telling me not to do it. He just started rice cereal in the bottle about 5 days ago. And he’s a completly different baby. He’s happy, no screaming or crying anymore, no more vomiting, he’s keeping everything down now. I tried spoon feeding him, he is NOT ready. People just dont understand, if they have never gone through it. But If I can I would really like to keep him off th meds. But the problem now is he’s getting constipated and not enough wet diapers. Should I switch to a different cereal? he’s getting rice now. Is it ok to put oatmeal in the bottle?? DONT answer if you dont have experience. Any other advice for Acid Reflux. THANKS
What else could I do to keep him from getting constipated??
What did you do for your baby with Acid Reflux?? When was it the worse, when did it peak??
He’s on Nestle Good Start right now. Its so far worked best for him.

A: my child is 7 months old and her doc put her on zantac for acid reflux but i read the side effects that were very rare but still bad so i took her off it. but i give her cereal in every bottle and have since she was 2 weeks old. if it constipates your baby give him prune juice or karo syrup in a few bottles a day.

my son is 7wks old and has been sick since he was 2wks old. hes allergic to milk base formulas so ped put him on Soy.that still did not help he still cried non stop so she had a GI exam done and figured out it was Acid Reflux. so she said to add cereal to his bottles and gave him Zantac after a week it still was no better so she now put him on Axid and thats still not helping to much. you can tell hes in pain he clinches up and bawls his fists up and just crys no stop what can i do? i have tried Gripe Water, Gas drops nothing helps. the rice cereal was constipating him so we went to oatmeal? i dont know what else to do for him can anyone tell me anything they have tried that helped? i think he may have a slight case of colic to but i read reflux and colic are similar? does anyone know anything let me know please anything will help im going crazy:) thank you and feel free to comment.. thanks alot

A: I’m so sorry hun!! Many babies who cannot tolerate dairy based formulas also cannot tolerate soy . Also most babies have gerd (reflux) to an extent but many things make it worse please read this it might really help also not to push you or anything but the baby may do a lot better with breastmilk my lil man has reflux and we are not medicating him I don’t eat dairy or soy (he seems to have those troubles as well) and he rarely even spits up or seems uncomfortable anymore I use a few of the steps listed here http://www.infantrefluxdisease.com/help-infant-reflux.php *edit* don’t give candy if the child allready reacts to formula poorly that could exasperate things greatly!! also good start is horrible if you need help and want to relactate there are many kind women here on y/a who I know can help out!!

Q: 6 week old twins with SEVERE acid reflux..PLEASE HELP!!!!?
I have 6 week old twins who had surgery for pyloric stenosis at 2 weeks old. After surgery they were both diagnosed with severe acid reflux/GERD…The doctors changed their formula 4 times and are currently on good start gentle plus.

My concern is they STILL vomit at least half if not all of their feedings. My doctor reasured me that it is fine if they are not in any discomfort and are gaining weight. They are both on zantac and the doctor said I could put some rice cereal in their bottles to thicken their feedings but the rice cereal made them vomit even more so I stopped. Then I tried oatmeal in their bottles because the doctor said that is easier on the stomach, but they are still vomiting just as much…i was putting 2 tablespoons for a 4 ounce bottle. maybe too much or too little?

I litterally have tried EVERYTHING.. I feed them very slowly and burp them every half ounce or so..I sit them up while i feed them, i keep them sitting up for 30 minutes after their feeds, I prop them up in their bouncers so they are sittin up, I put a wedge under their mattresses.

Please, if anyone has any suggestions or advice as to how to slow the vomiting down a bit, or anything to help with the reflux it would be great. I just feel so bad for my babies, I can’t bear to think that they will be vomiting like this until they grow out of it.

A: Maybe try alittle rice cereal or oatmeal with a spoon? And if that helps then maybe that means its not thick enough in the bottle. I used Dr. Browns bottles for my twins to keep the gas low, I know not for reflux but still helped with the spitting up. Poor babies I hope you find something that helps.

Q: I have acid reflux please help?
does that make the tounge burn and cause red dark circles on it….my mom says it does.and i ate hot oatmeal might that be the cause to? im not sure

A: Acid reflux is when your stomach acids come up your esophagus. You can feel buring in the back of your throat. There is medication to prevent that from happening. A red tongue means you ate something hot.

Q: My son has severe acid reflux and has been labeled “failure to thrive” He is just over 7 months old and weighs?
13 lb. 2 oz. He throws up 1-5 times per day and cannot possibly get the recommended 24-32 oz. of formula in each day. I have started some solid foods for him, oatmeal, pears, prunes, green beans and he likes a bit of mashed avocado if I mix it in with other things. He doesn’t take in enough solid food during the day to add to his calories significantly. Anyone have any suggestions on foods or anything we can try to help boost his caloric intake each day so he can grow? We already do all of the basics…thicken feeds, holding him upright after, he sleeps on an angled mattress, we do many small more frequent feeds, he has a GI dr. that isn’t much help and he is on Prevacid and Zantac.
It isnt Pyoric Stenosis, he has had 2 upper GI studies as well as a partial barrium swallow.
He has to be on Similac PM 60/40 formula because he also has Nephrogenic Diabetes Insipidus.
We are going to a new Pediatrician next Monday, and I will have them check his ears. He does seem to have a lot of wax that needs cleaning out every couple of days!
We are also requesting a new GI Dr. He just spent 2 more days in the hospital and had a scope with biopsies and a 21 hour ph probe test and his current GI dr. says she saw “nothing significant”. I’ve even taken to videotaping his episodes because I wonder if they think I’m lying!

A: First, I wouldn’t be horribly concerned by the weight just yet. My daughter is 13lbs 1oz and she just turned 7 months old. My older daughter is the same way. As long as your little one is not losing weight, you’re not in the “danger zone” yet.

As far as the other concerns, I would try to avoid things that are acidic. A lot of fruits and juices are acidic. I would stick with bland foods like oatmeal in order to either help or at least keep it from getting worse.

Q: I am a vegetarian and have IBS, possibly acid reflux, and am recovering anorexia/bulimia?
I have like messed up my WHOLE body with my eating disorder, and am currently needing to eat about 2400 calories(up from 800) but I am soo bloated, get alot of gas, right now i have diahreah(before i was super constipated),sever abdominal pain 24/7, only relieved when i go #2, have the mucus in my #2, etc..
I eat these daily:
raisins
dried apricots
pretzels
spirutein protein shakes
vanilla soymilk
brown rice
oranges
bananas
apples(sometimes cooked w/cinnamon)
Kashi cereal/oatmeal
oatmeal
broccoli
corn
green beans
peas
rye bread
orange juice
apple juice
cranberry juice
polmegranite juice

I also condume dairy products, but today i started not eating it, because i might be lactose intolerant:
skim milk
stonyfields yougurt, and the greek(fat free)
fat free cream cheese

can someone telll me what I am doing wrong, and give me diet ideas, i am only 14 years old. Please help me!!!

A: You need to go see a doc ASAP. You sound miserable. The doctor can determine what you may be allergic to and help offer solutions to what you should eat.

Q: Question about starting baby on rice cereal / oatmeal
My baby will be 4 months old soon. When you started your baby on rice cereal / oatmeal, did you:

1) Wait for the Dr. to tell you (she doesn’t have another appt. until she is almost 5 months old because of how it worked out) or just do it on your own?

2) Did you do one feeding a day or two?

3) Did you feed rice cereal or oatmeal?

My baby has had a lot of issues with spitting up – and it’s not just a little – it is a lot. She doesn’t have acid reflux that I know of (she’s not in pain) – just spits up a lot. If you have this experience, did it help when you started your baby on cereal, or later when you started your baby on the regular foods? I’m hoping it will help, but not sure it will.

A: 1. Just did it on my own. I wanted that kid on some food because I needed some sleep.
2. One feeding per day – around dinner time. That way his tummy would be fuller at night.
3. I fed at first rice cereal. Rice cereal is the single grain least likely to have a reaction to your baby.

My kid spit up too. It was normally above average, but not acid reflux either. He still spit up quite a bit until 8 months or 9 months old. Food doesn’t help the spitting up. The spitting up is caused by an immature muscle between the esophagus and stomach. Once this muscle matures, the spitting up will stop.

Q: How many calories a day do I need to survive?
I’ve been having horrible acid reflux for a week and I can’t eat much but I wanted to know how many calories I need to consume to be ok. I currently eat a yogurt, a soup, oatmeal, an apple and a small dinner (maybe 500 calories because anymore makes me feel sick).
Yeah I have been seeing a doctor. I take aciphex but it stopped working. I have another appointment this week but the eating thing just worries me.

A: If you are having digestive problems you need to see the doc and get this diagnosed and corrected. Even if you are sure it is acid reflux you need to find out what is causing it as it could be something like an ulcer or a hiatal hernia. See your doc ASAP for a proper diagnosis and treatment.

Q: When can i start oatmeal cereal?
My son has been on rice cereal in his bottles since he was 2 and half weeks old due to severe acid reflux. He has to be on Beechnut rice cereal and i have to add 1 tablespoon per ounce of formula. This was recommended by his PEDS and a GI specialist at the Children’s Hospital we were referred to cus he was in so much pain from the reflux. He is doing absolutely great with the rice cereal, but i was wondering when i can add a small amount of oatmeal to his bottles? He is almost 12 weeks old now.
P.S. He is also on Prevacid for the reflux as well.

A: YOU SHOULD BE FINE NOW TO START, BOTH MY KIDS DID IT THAT AGE ESP SINCE YOUR SOON HAS BEEN ON IT FOR 10 WEEKS, BY 4 MONTHS OLD MY KIDS HAD FRUIT TOO, AND BOTH ARE FINE AND HEALTHY ( ALSO HAD REFLUX) YOU MIGHT NEED A LITTLE MORE THEN YOU MEASURE THE RICE ITS THINNER
