acid reflux symptoms

A: SA – In some patients, this operation can also be done with a laparoscope — a method called “keyhole” or “telescopic” surgery. A laparoscope is a thin, hollow tube with a mini-camera on the end. Surgical tools can be sent through the laparoscope. Laparoscopic procedures use smaller cuts than open surgery, which results in less pain and scarring and shorter hospital stays.

A new procedure called endoluminal fundoplication uses a special scope (endoscope) to place small clips on the inside of the esophagus. The procedure is done to help prevent reflux.

Q: I want to know if these are symptoms of Acid Reflux or High Cholesterol or both…I’m worried for my dad. HELP?
He is a very hard headed man. I tell him to get checked out but he just won’t listen. Well lately when he eats food. He says that it feels like his food is trying to come back up and it ain’t food it’s is the “oil/grease” from the food that he ate. There has been times when he sleeps at night and he will wake up and its like something blocks his airways and he can’t breathe he gasps for air in a panic, until he breathes ok.What can it be?

A: The regurgitating feeling could be acid reflux, but I’m really not sure about the breathing. He could have sleep apnea or an asthma condition. He definitely needs to get to his doctor for a complete physical exam. Men can be very stubborn about seeing a doctor, even if they are not feeling well. Insist on it, and tell him you love him and want him to be around for a long, long time. Make an appointment for him, and go with him. Good luck! I hope you’re successful, and that everything turns out okay.

A: i’ve had acid reflux forever!!!!!!!! but, i have never heard of weakness and rapid heart rate ………i don’t think that is related! check with your doc!

Q: PLEASE HELP. Acid reflux.?
My acid reflux symptoms are starting to flare up and I have no tablets with me.

What are the best foods to eat to try and quell it?

A: 1cup cold water w/ 2tsp apple cider vinegar 3 times a day. Small frequent meals vs 3 large meals, don’t eat before bedtime. Extra pillows for head, esophagus elevation when you lay down.

Q: Can acid reflux spontaneously appear and disappear?
About 6 weeks ago I started developing acid reflux symptoms – i.e. burning in the throat, heartburn, etc. As long as I can remember, prior to this, I used to eat lots of spicy foods, drank coffee, smoked cigarettes, and drank beer. Since I’ve been to the doctor, I have cut out caffeine and nicotine from my diet, however I still enjoy my beer (1-2 drinks a night most nights, a little more on the weekends). I am currently on Metoclopram, Priolosec otc twice a day, and I’ve changed my diet substantially (no spices, no citrus, no fried, etc). I’ve always worked out and I’m not overweight.

With these changes I’ve made, is it possible that this will go away? I mean, it just HAPPENED so quickly. I’m almost 27 years old and I really don’t want to take pills for the rest of my life or have to deal with this the rest of my life.

Also, I’ve heard many things about alcohol and acid reflux as a no-no. I’m not sure if I’m ready to give up the beer though and it really hasn’t affected my reflux too much. I have heard that “unfiltered wheat beers” are very acid reflux friendly (i.e. Boulevard, Heffenwizen, Blue Moon w/out the orange). Any truth to this as well? Thanks in advance.

A: yes acid reflux comes and goes. it’s all a part of your diet, your activity level and anything else you put into your body. If you eat tomato soup you might get reflux, but if you eat tomato soup with a glass of milk, you might not.

you don’t necessarily need a prescription drug for it, most OTC drugs, tums, tagamet, rolaids, etc should take care of intermittent reflux.

you don’t need to give up beer

Q: Do I have Acid Reflux or what is it?
I have many of the symptoms of acid reflux, including the sensation of water in my throat, which makes me feel like I’m going to vomit sometimes. It gets worse when I lay down, and it gets worse when I eat spicy and fatty foods along with citrus fruits. I have been told that acid reflux can include pain in the stomach region or chest region, however, before I found out that I had acid reflux I had sharp, pressure-like pains right underneath my ribs (my mom said that’s where the intestines are). Is it acid reflux or what is it? The doctor diagnosed me with it but they didn’t take any tests or anything; they just assumed that’s what I have because I have similar symptoms, and said I’m probably just under alot of stress and that I don’t need to take any tests :-. Another thing I noticed is that I usually have a mixture of nausea and heartburn, and the feeling of having a full stomach hours after eating. Thanks, all help appreciated!

A: It sounds more like a hiatal hernia than acid reflux. I think docs are diagnosing everyone with acid reflux because now there are drugs for it. Ask your doc if he can check for a hiatal hernia. It’s when a small portion of your stomach squeezes through the diaphragm where your esophagus goes through. It can feel like you’re really full all the time or like you’re starving all the time or it can hurt right under the breastbone. One easy thing to try is drink 2 or 3 glasses of water so your stomach is really full and heavy then bounce so the weight of the water pulls the stomach back down. It can really help and if it does that’s a good clue to tell your doctor, My chiropractor gave me that tip so when it really hurts there’s something you can do yourself.

had it about 3 weeks, doc said its acid reflux as i am 22 weeks pregnant but would like some advice as i think he decided really quickly

xx

A: Yep, that’s it. Acid reflux is pretty common in pregnancy; I had it and so have a lot of other women. That’s probably why your doctor diagnosed you so quickly. :)
With my second pregnancy I had it so bad that I wole up the middle of the night one night coughing stomach acid into my nose–not pleasant, believe me. It will get better.

Q: Acid Reflux-How long should it take medication to start working?
I started to have acid reflux symptoms about 2 months ago.

I went to see my medical doctor and then a gastroenterologist.

I have tried more then one medication.

My doctor started me on Axciphex on 1/9 to take in the morning. I am also taking Omeprazole at night.

The Omeprazole was causing sleep disturbances on me. The doctor now is having me try Pepcid AC.

How long should this medication take to work?

It has been weeks.

I do have an upper endoscopy scheduled to 2/9.

A: ~~ It works differently on different people.. some times you have to even change medication.

Q: Is vitamin water with citric acid okay for people with Acid Reflux?
I started having acid reflux symptoms probably about 6 months ago. Lately I have been drinking Vitamin water (The tropical citrus kind only.) and it carries citric acid in it. My acid reflux has been acting up lately, I think it’s because I have been exercising a lot and I have read up that people that are diagnosed with acid reflux aren’t suppose to exercise a lot because it puts pressure on the stomach. That is true, correct? I’m going to stop exercising as much and I’m going to stay away from trigger foods since I now know what they are. What I really need to know is if the Tropical Citrus vitamin water has too much citric acid in it for me to handle. Thank you for helping.
The tropical citrus vitamin water does make my stomach burn for about 10-15 minutes. It’s not severe burning though. What do you recommend me drinking that is healthy that won’t upset my acid reflux?

A: U should avoid anything like that, or anything with a sour and citrus-e taste. I was taking 2 vitamin c tablets a day and drinking red bull and have suffered really bad from it. stupid me

Q: Do I have Acid Reflux or Irritable Bowl Syndrome?
This is a very serious question and I’m not trying to be funny.

This started about two and a half weeks ago. Everyday, after I eat something, my stomach starts to hurt and I feel really gassy. My body is trying really hard to get rid of the gas, so I start burping nonstop, and if I’m having trouble getting the burp out I get this nauseas feeling and I’ll end up doing “wet” burps. This makes me think I’m having acid reflux symptoms.

But, after I eat I also get these strong urges to do “#2″. I’m also in college and very stressed, which my mom says may be just irritable bowel syndrome. One day I started taking an antacid pill before I ate and I didn’t have any of these symptoms. This is very annoying because its been happening everyday, and I don’t want to keep taking those pills before I eat. What could it be? I’ll eventually visit the doctor if this doesn’t stop.

A: My first reaction when I saw the title to your question was to say it depends on what end it’s coming out of. But seriously …. I would say you don’t have either one. IBS would be diarrhea, and it would be really bad. It shouldn’t effect your stomach, and wouldn’t be causing burping. And acid reflux would be stomach acid coming back up … it usually hurts really bad and you would occasionally end up with stomach acid in your mouth. You may have something else wrong with you … have you looked up Celiac Disease yet? Or could you be lactose intolerant .. or have a food allergy? You probably should be going to see your doctor. Good luck.

Q: Nothing seems to work for acid reflux?
MY 4 month old daughter has strong acid reflux symptoms. (from what i read on the internet) . Her sleep is extremely disturbed becos of this. And at times she throws up too much. I’ve given her domstal and ondem but she throws up more after these. I recently tried a homeopathic medicine (natrum phosphoricum) which is supposed to release all the gas. But after taking this she burps all the time and gets more disturbed. I should mention here that she is formula fed.

The only thing that works is colic aid and for almost a week we’ve had to give her colic aid after which she finally sleeps. Also she has started passing stool on alternate days. Earlier it was everyday. We follow all the advice regarding positioning for acid reflux but nothing works. I don’t want to give her medicine everyday. pls help.

A: Hi there,

I had same problem with my oldest girl, she was formula feed from about 2 1/2 months and around 3 months she started throwing too much after and in between feeds. I took her to the doctor and he told us to keep her inclined after a feed and sleeping with a pillow. Also took off the formula and send her an special one easier to digest. we never had to give her any sort of medication and she was fine by the time she was a year old.

I would suggest speak with your doctor and try some positions to help her. Always remember that you are doing your best to help your little one and that she will get better!

Good luck,

Q: What should I take to get rid of Acid Reflux?
I bought some TUMS the other day and they’re flavored Smoothies but I want to know if I should take something else? I’ve been having this problem for about a week and a few years back it happened but went away after a couple days. This time it’s been everyday for about a week and it’s scaring me. Should I go to to Dr? Or Is this not that serious and that’s why we can buy TUMS at the local drugstore? I haven’t been sleeping well and anything I eat feels like it burns my throat and last night my stomach had this weird feeling…like I was hungry but I did eat an early dinner. Like I said…lately anything I eat makes me feel horrible so I haven’t really been eating much so I’m not sure if that feeling in my stomach last night was because I was really hungry or if that goes with the whole acid reflux symptoms. If you know about Acid Reflux….please tell me what you think. Thanks in advance!

A: Try drinking more water. I sometimes get acid reflux and all the days that i get it, i recall that i wasn’t drinking a lot of water those days.

Start carrying a large water bottle with you to work and be conscious about how much you are drinking. It might not work after the first day, but after a couple days, your body fixes itself.

I hope this works for you!

Q: How can I permanently cure my stuffy nose due to Severe Acid Reflux?
Hi, I’ve suffered from congestion for over 15 years and assumed it was sinusitis. After visiting my doctor recently he informed me that it was due to excessive fluid build up in my sinuses as a result of acid reflux. I am currently on nexium and my acid reflux symptoms have improved with the exception of my stuffy nose. I wake up in the middle of the night unable to breathe. Any ideas how I can get rid of this very annoying symptom?

A: Sounds like the nexium isn’t quite enough.

Some additional things to try:

Prop up the head of your bed.
Eat an apple each night, early evening.
Eat nothing 2-3 hours before bed.
Pay attention what foods at dinner may contribute.

Q: Is difficulty swallowing and pain in chest upon swallowing a symptom of acid reflux…..?
I had strep a few weeks ago & had to be put on 2 courses of antibiotics to knock it out(21 days), the strep is now gone. But since being sick & being on the antibiotics, I’ve had heartburn, difficulty swallowing & chest pain upon swallowing & the doctor said he thinks its acid reflux & hastily gave me an acid blocker, which I have yet to take because the heartburn really wasn’t THAT bothersome & I didn’t think I needed it. (My doctor is one of those that rushes you thru, & not a good listener) My chest is bothering me, sometimes even hurting a little when I breathe (although I’ve had no chest congestion or coughing), and when I eat, things that don’t normally get stuck, are getting stuck at my chest & difficult to get to go down & it’s painful. Is this really a symptom of acid reflux? I’ve never had a problem with acid reflux before, I have none of the other symptoms that I’ve heard of with acid reflux. Should I get a 2nd opinion? Anyone had this symptom before?
The reason I am so hesitant at taking the acid blocker meds is because I don’t want to take unnecesary medication & because I’ve heard negative things about acid blockers themselves.
Anyone ever have this problem as a complication of strep? I first noticed it when I had been on my first course of antibiotics for 2 days.
Also, I don’t have the money to go out and get unnecessary prescriptions filled. It wouldn’t seem to be my heart, if the problem is when I swallow, I would think.

A: Your symptoms are typical for acid reflux disease (GERD). I suspect you may have developed a web of tissue in your esophagus, since you have pain there, rather than low in your throat.
Please go to see a gastroenterologist, who can come to a proper diagnosis of the problem.

Q: Has anyone had the bravo test for acid reflux?
