Q: My newborn seems to have reflux, its like adult acid reflux, anyone know what i can give him to help it?
The doctor said just dont lay him down immediately after he eats for like 45 minutes, but this doesn’t seem to be working and im scared he is in pain.

A: When my children were infants, I used my parents old folks remedies, but, this may seem unorthordox, but it worked. I took off the baby bottle cap and add just a pinch of baking soda to the nipple with a few drops of milk and had her drink it from the cap and was very careful she didn’t get any air. Afterwards, I put her up on my shoulders and gently pat and rubbed her back. This releived the acid reflux and also gas.
Me, my children all survived as infants off general things we kept in our kitchen cabinets long before zantac and other medicines became available. But then again, this is a different world we’re in now and we have become dependent upon doctors for everything.
My advice to you is, only you know your child and if something isn’t working first time around, then by all means get a second opinion.

Q: Please HELP….Reflux & Settling Techniques?
My 2mth old has silent reflux that is like heartburn in adults. This is constantly waking him. I feel that this is constantly waking him while he sleeps as he is only sleeping for 30min intervals & wakes screaming like he is being murdered?

I have been to the doctors & child clinic & they have suggested I wrap him & let him cry no more than 15mins?
I have tried this for over a week now & it is not working. It takes me an hour to eventually settle him with cuddles?

Please Help

A: 1) He shouldn’t sleep flat on his back, but on an incline. You can incline his crib by putting books under the crib legs NEVER put anything under the baby or mattress as this is unsafe.

2) Crying makes GER worse!!!

Other suggestions:

If you suspect GER, mention this possibility to your doctor. The diagnosis is usually made based on the history given by the parents. A doctor can confirm the diagnosis by placing a string-like tube into baby’s esophagus (only minimally uncomfortable), leaving the tube in place overnight, and measuring the amount of stomach acids regurgitated into the esophagus. If the reflux is severe, your doctor may prescribe medicines that lower the amount of stomach acid produced and accelerate stomach emptying. Besides these medications, try these home remedies to ease your baby’s discomfort:

* Keep baby upright and quiet for at least thirty minutes after feeding.
* Offer smaller, more frequent feedings.
* Wear your baby in a carrier as long as possible. Carried babies cry less. Babies reflux more while crying.
* Breastfeed. Studies show that GER is less in breastfed babies.
* If you are bottlefeeding (and if recommended by your doctor), thicken baby’s feedings with one or two tablespoons of rice cereal to each 8-ounce bottle.
* Discuss with your doctor the safest sleeping position for your baby. Babies with severe reflux sleep best on their stomach and propped up at a 30-degree angle by elevating the head of the crib. (Babies without reflux should be put down to sleep on their backs.)

From one-third to one-half of all babies have some degree of reflux during the first three months, yet the good news is that most infants outgrow reflux around seven to nine months of age.

Q: Acid reflux and tooth decay?
So I was diagnosed with laryngopharyngeal reflux last summer and it really doesn’t bother me so I haven’t been treating it. But lately I’ve had this tooth ache which i found out was a cavity a few days ago (no big surprise) the thing is i had x rays in August which showed no decay in said tooth or any teeth, plus I think I have another fairly deep cavity. I thought it took years for decay to reach the dentin or pulp. So now I feel like I should do something about my reflux, I know how to treat that but I was wondering if there is anyway to protect my teeth in the mean time. I already brush with crest pro health in the morning, and use prescription tooth paste called prevident at night. I also floss and use ACT mouth wash at night. Can adults get dental sealant and does it work against acid reflux? Also what should I do to make my tooth hurt less until I can get to the dentist, I’ve been taking ibuprofen all day and am starting to wish the root would just die already!

A: Dental decay can spread much more rapidly once it reaches the dentin, and it is a definite misconception that it takes years for a cavity to become deep. Sensodyne pro-namel is very bad tasting toothpaste (to be honest), however its supposed to be good for helping with sensitivity and acid erosion. You can also dab a bit of toothpaste on the tooth in pain and just let it sit there, which may help with the pain until you can get to the dentist.

Adults can get sealants if the dentist feels that it will be helpful or beneficial, which is based on case by case scenarios. I don’t know if it works against acid reflux to be honest. I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt though. Good luck :)

Q: baby is 7 mnths on chunky foods, what foods would cause sudden diharea? bread? or adults oat cereal?? help?
my son is 7 months old and he is eating a range of chunky foods from carrots to mince to fish fingers. just wondering if giving him white bread would cause diharea. it suddenly came about yesterday and the only foods he has eaten in the last few days are fish from fish fingers vegemite and nutella on white bread oats with full fat cows milk and pureed pears and thats all. also we have switched from anti-reflux formula to heinz nurture step 2 about a week ago. could this have caused it??? please help me
also we were told by our child health nurse to give him cows milk on cereal from 7 months.. the diareah has made his bum really red and sore????
he wont accept water or juice only his formula. also as of tomorrow i should only feed him one food for a couple of days and then try a new one??? im desperate for help…this is my first baby and im only 19!!! everyone tells me different advice
sorry but he is about 7 1/2 months and i worded the q wrong. he is on soft food , not pureed just mashed up.

A: changing formula will do it for sure…also any types of liquid he is not used to other than water….if you are trying new foods you might be trying new drinks so that can do it for sure. alot of juices like apple juice for one can really cause that too…good luck

Q: Where can you get dental care for the very poor adult?
My mother needs dental care due to having severe acid reflux. She had a beautiful smile. She contracted a stomach virus and vomited several times, the acid from her stomach deteriated her right front tooth. She has half or less of it left.We live in Anniston,Alabama. My mother is on SSI which doesn’t pay for the dental work she needs.Like veneers or somthing along those lines. We would love to see our mother smile again.

A: Since she is on SSI she should qualify for Medicare or Medical (It might be called something else if you are in another state). A last resort would be something like Western Dental- where they have payment plans, but there dentists are not the best. Has she seen her regular dentist? There is not hurt in calling and asking how much something is and if they accept payment plans.

Q: How to start online support group for specific eating disorder?
I have been diagnosed as having the eating disorder known as “Childhood rumination disorder” or rumination disorder, as I am an adult. A chronic condition in which one ruminates or regurgitates one’s food throughout the day, no known cause or cure. Is not acid reflux disorder though could be confused with that . Anorexia and bulimeia(sp) have well served but this has not been yet.
started it on yahoo …. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/digestiveunderstanding
did it “over breakfast”…. which is also brunch and midmorning snack if I’m not lucky….

A: MySpace has many groups for different eating disorders. There are so many people on there, you’re bound to find someone who would like to talk to someone in private about what they’ve been through with this. I have never heard of it, but it sounds like anyone with it would need some help dealing with it. You can start a group on MySpace about it and you’ll have floods of people want to talk to you.

Q: unknown diagnosis for infant reflux or seizures or both?
I know this probably isn’t the place to ask such a serious question, but would like to know of opinions and suggestions, you know what you think.
Names have been changed.

Superman is 3.5 months old and very healthy. No allergies. Happy, Smiley, talkative baby. So nothing like this has ever happened to him. No fevers, no ear infections. All around healthy.
Superman gave us a scare Sunday evening. Superman was up during the time this happened because he just woke up from his nap and ate. He was sitting with an adult playing. So what happened was that Superman stopped breathing for about 20 seconds and was stiff, biting on his tongue, fists balled up and started turning blue, then went limp and eyes rolled to the back of the head. Scorpion started CPR on Superman and finally started crying suddenly. During this time 911 was called.
Superman started to lower his cries a little but was still crying. 911 arrived in great time (seemed like less than a minute). The fire department crew looked Superman over & checked him out. He seemed ok. No bites. No physical signs. Heart beats normal and breathing normal. So what they recommended we do is go to the ER of course. So we did that.
When we arrived, he was checked out again and was fine, but hospital wanted Superman to stay overnight for monitoring. He was on an Apnea monitor to measure heart and breathing. All through the night he was checked on every hour. He got x-rays done and blood drawn. His breathing and heart was fine the whole stay. So the results were that it may have been Reflux and/or seizure, but he’s ok to go home.
We got home Monday evening. Superman was sent home with an Apnea monitor, which he is on right now. No alarms so far. He’s just a little more crankier than usual. He’s slowly getting back to talking and smiling, but sometimes just stares. He’s a little more crankier now. We did get a couple smiles this morning though. But so far he’s ok.
So we followed up with Superman’s regular pediatrician (we’ll call her Dr.Peds). She also said it could be reflux by the weight and height comparison. But Dr.Peds also said that it sounds like seizures. So we got a prescription for the reflux which is zantac.

Now my question is can reflux or seizure cause you not to breathe?
Why isn’t he getting seen by a cardiologist or a neurologist yet?
What do you think it might be?

Thank you for all those who reply seriously.
-Very Scared Mother of 2-
He is breastfed. Has not been given adult foods or even cereal/baby food yet.

A: First, I just wanted to say that what you described must have been terrifying for a parent and, as described, you handled it beautifully! Good for you (and “Scorpion”) for doing everything right!

Now… seizures absolutely can and frequently do cause a person to stop breathing. Respiration is a function of several muscles… if those muscles are affected in the seizure, they spasm and temporarily fail to function correctly and breathing stops. When the seizure stops, the patient sometimes starts to breathe again spontaneously and sometimes the body needs to be “reminded” to breathe normally again.

It’s quite common for a person who suffers a seizure to take hours to days to “get back to her normal self.” This applies to infants, too.

Sometimes seizures in kids are a one-time event, so the docs are likely doing what we call “watchful waiting” (ie: keeping an eye on him and see if it happens again.) If it does, Dr. Peds will likely refer to a neurologist to investigate why the seizures are occuring.

On that note – you mentioned that “Superman” sometimes “just stares.” That would be an important thing to discuss with Dr. Peds – it’s possible that these “staring episodes” are a form of seizure called ABSENT SEIZURES. Absent seizures are more common in children and they’re characterized by the child just staring off into space for seconds to minutes. This info may be enough to prompt Dr. Peds to refer you to a neurologist immediately.

As for reflux being the cause… it’s recently been “in vogue” among the medical community to “diagnose” reflux in infants and prescribe either proton pump inhibitors or histamine H2-receptor agonists (like Zantac). I use the term “diagnose” loosely here, because this is based purely on symptomology and frankly I think it’s a bit of a pathophysiologic leap. And further, these meds have not been studied widely (if at all) in infants, nor have long term effects been established. I’ll hop off my soap box on this one, but if you’re interested to know more please feel free to email me.

Good luck!

Q: Diagnose Me (Trouble Initiating Swallowing Reflux)?
Young Otherwise Healthy Female Adult
Normal Barrium Swallow and Esophageal Endoscopy
Thyroid Cyst (I assume found by chance during thyroid ultrasound for swallowing problems) Too low to be the problem.
Symptoms (Trouble Initiation Swallowing Reflux. I chew the food overly well and try to shift the food from the tongue to the throat and it will not go. I gag and the food comes back.)
This happens on and off. It gets worse for a period of a few weeks to a month with times in there where I can swallow normally and then it goes away all together..until next time.
I have anxiety but not all the time and I often do not have the least bit of stress during times when I am struggling the most.
I also shake a lot and had an uncle pass away do to multiple sclerosis.
Docs can’t figure it out although I think they thought it was something different and deeper. I am planning another visit unfortunately.
I understand that nobody here can cure me or claim to be a doc just getting other opinions. Thank you.
I have a problem initiating the swallowing reflex…not reflux and my weight is normal.

A: Hi taIntervention, Difficulties with swallowing could be a symptom of MS. And for most of us the disease is relapsing/remitting so that would explain the on/off characteristic of your problem.

MS is not a fatal disease and your uncle probably passed away from a complication of the disease and not the MS itself since it does not attack the major organs. MS also does not run in families. The fact that your uncle had MS has no bearing on whether or not you will get the disease. Even if one of your parents had the disease, your chances of getting it would be only 1% to 3% higher than the population which is almost negligible. However, that still does not mean that you cannot have MS or cannot get MS.

My heart goes out to you. There is nothing worse than not knowing what the problem is. May you get a speedy diagnosis!

He was diagnosed at my age and I am deathly scared of a death sentence like his but I would rather know and start treatment early. Please help me but do not sugar coat or say there are too many other symptoms. Just tell me what you know about the disease and if the symptoms I do have fit. That would help a lot.

A: There are many reasons for swallowing problems..the link below goes through all the various conditions. Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism are included in this list. As they have found a thyroid cyst, this is leaning towards a thyroid condition causing your swallowing problems. Tests for thyroid – TSH, free T3, free T4 and thyroid antibodies – Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) and Thyroglobulin antibodies (TG-Ab).

I had problems swallowing when i had vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency can be misdiagnosed for many other neurological conditions including MS. Vitamin B12 deficiency is common in thyroid patients.

Q: Pulse Monitor for New Born w/ Reflux?
In order to bring a little piece to my wife and I, we were looking into possibly finding a wrist type pulse monitor for our new born. Our wonderful girl, Sophia, has reflux and was born underweight. It is a big concern that while she is sleeping, she will bring something up and we won’t know or possibly find out too late. This is our 1st child and of course we are nervous about not monitoring her 100% of the time. My wife has gotten about a total of 16 hours in the last 12 days and for her to sleep better, we are looking for something to solve our problem. Ideally, a watch type device that will start beeping when it looses the pulse. When our little girl it able to move around more and gains weight, we will rest a little easier. Any thoughts out there? I can only find adult type devices, but none especially designed for babies. Again, any help would be amazing! Thank You.

A: Sorry, I don’t know about the monitor for babies.
You should be able to Google it and maybe find one?

Concerning her choking in her sleep. I would suggest you put her to bed on her side, then anything can dribble out of her mouth.
You roll up a blanket or blankets, and place behind her back, between her and her crib.
Then she cannot roll back onto her back.
Try and get your wife to relax a bit. She needs her sleep or she will become ill and of no use to the baby.
So, when you are at home. Take over and send her to bed.

You don’t say, if she is breast or bottle fed?
She may cope better with small, frequent feeds.

Q: What bottles are best for a gassy baby who has reflux problems?
We have have the best luck with the Dr. Browns bottles and its been even better since we put her on the soy formula.

She was originally diagnosed with reflux, but then it was discovered she just couldn’t handle regular formula (which myself and my sisters couldn’t either…infact one sister was breastfed and she ended up on Soy formula as well by 2-3 months of age……as an adult we are all lactose intolerant, as is my mother, uncles, Grandfather, his siblings, and his mother)

But we tried several different bottles, the Avent seemed to be the worst. The Gerber bottles were awful, the Playtex Drop In Bottles were pretty good and I still use them every once in awhile in a pinch. But so far the Dr. Browns have been best. (She rarely spits up anymore and rarely is gassy, that coupled with the Soy formula has seemed to do the trick)

But I still can’t help but wonder what the best ones for this are? (I didn’t know about Dr. Browns bottles until 2 weeks ago, I wish I had known about them all along. So I want to know whats out there and whats the best)

A: Our little one was quite gassy, she did good with the Tommee Tippee closer to Nature range.

I have also heard that Dr Browns are good, though we too only found out about them a little too late.

I hope you find the right ones.

Q: 1st Degree Heart block (AV Block)???
Do you have it yourself…How common is it in a young adult???…I have Acid Reflux/Low Blood Pressure/and this!!!

And I’m still a Young Adult…I’m not over nor under weigh…

Is there any way to over come heart block???…I want to be in Law enforcement and I’m in a explorer program right…There telling me that if I don’t get a full release then I will never be able to do the job…Is it possible to get a full release and keep myself from a 2nd or 3rd heart Block…

Yes I have spoken to my Cardiologist about it…But I would like some info from people who have it them selfs or know people with it!!!

And is it commen for a young female adult???
I eat healthy!!!

A: I’m 23
I have a 2ND deg AV block
I have a pace maker.

Its not because the food you eat, the amount of exercises you get or family history. It just shows up.

My story: When I was 19-20 I was feeling sick a lot, flu like symptoms. I was very active I rode 2-4 horses a day, went to college and did normally teen stuff. It got to the point that every time I went to the barn I would get dizzy spells and felt like I was going to pass out. Every time I would go to the doctor they would do an EKG and nothing would ever come up other than a low blood pressure. Well this went on for about 6 months. I had an appointment for a tilt table test and was all hooked up to the heart monitor. The cardiologist walked in looked at the monitor and said you need a pacemaker asap. the next day i was having surgery.

Its 3 years later and I’m doing fine. As for a job in law enforcement i don’t know you would have to talk to your doctor and see if the departments in your area have health requirements. I’m an x-ray tech and as far as my job goes I’m fine but i would ask.

if you have any more questions let me know. I know how hard it is and having someone who has been there is help-full. jennywi@sbcglobal.net

Q: anyone else still being sick at 28 weeks pregnant?
it doesn’t happen every day but maybe once every two weeks i am dreadfully sick for no real reason, i do have a really sensitive reflux which means when i see people spit or dribble [as adults] i retch which does make me sick but mostly its just because i feel sick, it makes me not want to eat in case i bring whatever i have eaten back and i am totally fed up with it

A: I went through the “morning sickness” between 22 weeks and 28 weeks. I would feel sick to my stomach at some points, but mainly it was a lot of random throwing-up. And yes, seeing certain gross things (people spitting or our dog throwing up or licking too much) would make sick to my stomach. The doctor finally had to put me on medicine as I had lost most of my pregnancy weight from throwing up so much. She said it sounded like I may have had some type of issue to originally cause me to throw-up, and then my body just got used to that way of life, and they had to give me something to retrain my body to stop. Doesn’t really make sense, but it is possible, and it is likely the dreaded morning sickness coming on late.

Everyone is different, but I found saltine crackers and soup to be the best thing to hold down. And keep your liquids separate from your foods. If you are throwing up, make sure to keep drinking fluids, especially gatoraid, to keep from getting dehydrated, as that only makes things worse.
