A: yes thats normal, i dont mean to be the bearer of bad news but in my experience it only gets worse, sorry. i use boots fruit flavoured indigestion relief.
Q: I have acid reflux and when I drink I get heartburn really bad. What types of drinks should I stay away from?
I noticed the pain happens when I drink vodka and other types of light drinks… Usually I’ll have to sit for like 5 to 10 mins and the pain is gone and I am able to drink again… The pain is mostly in my shoulder blades when it happens…
A: Stay away from any carbonated drinks such as pepsi, coke, etc etc.
Alcohol isnt good for alot of people too.
Q: When you are pregnant, is it okay to take Maalox or some type of heartburn and bloating relief tablet?
my friend is not exactly sure if she is pregnant and she won’t be able to know for a few days but she is having gas problems of all kinds and wants to know if it is safe to take acid relief tablets like Maalox to relief the pain. Does anybody know?
A: Tums or Malox should be just fine. I eat tums like they are going out of style. There are however, certain things that can be harmful in the first trimester as compared to later on in the pregnancy. But I am almost certain Tum’s is not one of them. However, she may want to get into the Doctor’s asap….just to make sure things are going well. I don’t remember having gas so early????
Q: Heartburn and cheese (peptic ulcer)?
I am writing to share my feelings. I have heartburn. I saw doctors, got endoscopy and now i am taking Omeprazole 20mg. Of course doctor told me about dieting, and foods i’d better avoid. I also researched the web for more info. One thing i would like to share is possible connection between cheese and heartburn. I have noticed doctors and most people often overlooked relationship between these 2. It feels to me when i have some foods with cheese heartburn becomes intense after some time: pizza, cheeseburgers… If you want to research yourselves, just type “heartburn and cheese” in this yahoo answer and you’ll notice the patterns. Just sharing my personal thought FYI. May be you have different experiences and i am one ofthose few people with cheese problems. Anyway if you have the same or different thoughts and experiences please share.
A: If you have a peptic ulcer, the LAST thing you want to do is take apple cider vinegar. My mother, bless her heart, thought it could cure anything. She’d mix apple cider vinegar, honey, and water, then chill it and drink it. One morning before work, I had a stomach ache. She talked me into trying a glass. In seconds, I was doubled over in pain! That’s how mine was diagnosed.
Cheese (in small amounts) doesn’t hurt me, however tomato sauce things do. Pizza, hamburgers with ketchup, barbeque, anything with tomato sauce. I don’t have an ulcer any more, but the tomato sauce still gives me heartburn for hours. Are you sure you have an ulcer, or could you be lactose intolerant? Perhaps a gallbladder condition? If I eat too much cheese or ice cream, my gallbladder acts up.
Thanks for sharing, though. You never know where you’re going to find useful information.
Q: I keep getting these heartburn-type attacks, anyone have any suggestions?
I don’t know if it’s heart burn, acid reflux, or what; but I randomly get these (I think) gastric attacks where there’s a pressure build up in my chest that last anywhere from 3-5 hours, and then leaves fairly abruptly.
It usually, but not always, only happens if I’ve eaten something after 7:00.
It’s a steady dull pain that is slightly relieved if I sit up, so I can’t lay down and sleep.
I can feel it start in the evening, and always gets full blown after I go to bed.
I tried Pepto, tums, rolaids, and even ibuprofin; none of which helped. Twice it has caused me to vomit, which also provided no relief.
The only thing that helps is Prilosec. When I’m on the 14 day treatment, it never happens; but once I stop, it will start again.
And it happens about twice a week on average.
Any ideas about what I can do? (can’t go to the doctor, since I am without health insurance for another few months).
Is there an OTC medicine that works better than Prilosec?
Thanks
Oh, and I don’t know if it matters, but I’m not overweight, and am only 29.
And my eating habits are not the greatest
Thanks for all the good suggestions. I do drink a lot of water (it’s pretty much all I drink), but I know I gotta improve my diet.
I guess 29 is relatively young, but starting to get up there… it’s gonna be hard cutting down on all those pizzas
Looks like I’ll be stocking up on the Prilosec too.
A: My husband is 30. He was diagnosed with GERD by a gastrointerologist. Your symptoms sound exactly the same. Yes Prilosect is what his doctor recommended 20mg, if the Nexium he is on now became too expensive. The doctor says it works just as well as the Nexium. The trick is to stay on it don’t quit just because you feel better. There is no cure for GERD medication it the answer unless it had eroded your espohagus than surgery is an option. Otherwise stay on the prolosect until you can afford a Doc.
Q: lately i been waking up gasping for air and i think it has to do with heartburn could that be it?
Im 23 years old. Lately i been waking up gasping for air and been having this shortening of breath and i feel that my heart burn has sumthin to do with it its really scary to me because when it happens i jump out of bed quickly and start moving around panicing and after a while i regain my breath again at the moment it feels like if jus sum1 took all the oxygen away from me, i’ve read up on symptoms and i dont have chest pains nor does my heart hurt at all but i do feel like sum type of heartburn acid goes to my throart and it burns alittle i havent seen a dr. Yet because i have no health insurance and i dont have the money to pay for the extremly high bill after gettin checked out. I am really scared of this and i feel like if this continues i might not b able to regain my breath again and die and now i am even scared of going to sleep. If theres a dr. Out there reading this can you please help me understand whats going on? Do i just need to chew on some tums or rolaids or sumthing?please help! Thank you
A: It could definitely be related to the heartburn. It could be what is called G.E.R.D. or gastroesophageal reflux disorder. Basically it involves acid travelling back up the oesophagus due to a weakened muscle at the top of the stomach. The acid thus causes heartburn, and when you are horizontal it can reach as far as the back of your throat, making you either gag or choke. There is no possibility that this would result in death so you can clear your mind of that worry, but it’s still very unpleasant.
If you really can’t see a doctor then there are a few bits of advice that you can follow to try and eliminate the problem. Number one is to avoid excessively spicy or fatty foods. Number two is to leave a minimum of three hours after eating a meal before going to bed or even lying down. Number three is to sleep on a slight incline, by either using more pillows or by putting a couple of books under the top end of your mattress. This utilises gravity to help keep the acid down where it belongs.
Over the counter antacids are also a great help, and taking one a half hour or so before bed might make a big difference.
This is all assuming that acid is the root cause. You really could do with the advice of a doctor, but it’s worth eliminating acid as the problem by following the advice I have given.
I hope you feel better soon!

I just don’t know what to think anymore. I was so sure this morning I was going to get a BFP. I feel like my symptoms are going away… anyone ever felt liek this AND had “implantation spotting” and ended up not being pregnant? For awhile I was conviced I was and now I’m starting to doubt myself. Anyone feel the same way? I’m so anxious for tomorrow. I feel like she’s going to come and surprise me
Any advice would be appreciated.
Yes, at 7, 9, 10 and 12 dpo. All BFN
A: I am 12 dpo and still waiting as well this is what I have read :
this is not a concrete or set in stone guideline. Every female is different, therefore, just because one female received a positive on the day she missed her period, does not mean the next female will, even though she may be pregnant.
For some females, they may have all the signs of pregnancy, and know they are, but may not receive a positive on a HPT until they are well into their 9 or 11 week
Q: What type of milk should I drink to avoid heartburn caused by milk?
I drink milk for breakfast but as the time goes by I feel a burning sensation in my esophagus, someone told me that it is caused by milk, but I don’t want to stop drinking milk so I thought that may be I could have a different type of milk without lactose for instance.
Please help me, my breakfast isn’t complete anymore
A: IF it is the milk, then what is occurring is your system is ‘dumping’ more acid into your stomach to ‘dissolve’ the calcium (the milk). You will probably need to see your doctor about getting an acid reducing medication, or acid blocker. DON’T chew Tums or Rolaids or all those CALCIUM based over the counter treatments…THE CALCIUM MAY be your problem…But see your doctor before exercising (Jumping to conclusions that is)…
Q: I had Helicobacter Pylori and took antibiotics for 2 weeks.?
I felt fine after the dose for 2 weeks. But since the two week period of feeling fine i have been feeling nautious and having chest pains (heartburn type) not all the time only when i eat something greasey or if i don’t eat much at all. Has anyone else had this experience? (its been a month now) i’m trying to figure out if the antibiotics actually did kill off the bug or if it is evolving and regenerating in my stomach
i am also trying to get pregnant (and i have pcos) my dr said the home preg test should read rightly but others are saying go have a blood test….i dunno if my systems up the creek, if i’m preggers(i hope its this one!) or if the bug hasn’t gone yet….any help would be appreciated! Cheers
A: Did you finish the antibiotics as prescribed? If so, chances of the bug morphing into something else are slim. The problem with antibacterial resistant bugs are poor med compliance and overuse of antibiotics. You may just be getting over the infection. This may have caused some gall bladder issues as well (since you mentioned greasy food). Anyway, as for the pregnancy issue, a blood test is always best. Good Luck
Q: heartburn…?
ive taken pepto and tums but that hasnt helped me at all. im taking some antibiotics right now and one side effect is acid reflux. id like to know if there is something else i can do…maybe a natural remady…some type of food i could possibly eat to help me out?? please help!
thanks guys! the vinegar and milk instantly helped!
A: i have always drank a glass of milk to get rid of my heartburn…it coats my esophogus and in about 20 min i feel much better. Dont know if its just my body…but thats what works for me. If you dont feel any better by the end of the day…i would try calling your doctor to see if there’s anything else you can take. My boyfriend uses Zantac for his acid refulx and it works in about the same time as when i drink milk. If you try a medicine like that, you should call your doctor or ask the pharmacist if it will mess with the medicine you’re currently taking. Hope you feel better…i hate heartburn and acid reflux.
Q: I am 33 weeks pregnant and have been having this terrible heartburn. It is like clear acid that I keep coughin
up. It seems like when you have a chest cold and you cough up mucus but this burns really bad like acid. I have tried tons of tums, milk, and zantac 150. Nothing has worked. Also avoiding anything greasy or acidic. Does anyone know if this is a type of normal heartburn. Ive never had heartburn that was always just clear, and with no vomit. Im in lots of pain it feels like its on fire. If it is just heart burn does anyone know anything else I can try, to make it subside. Thanks for help!
A: Yes it is normal.
I had it shocking while I was pregnant.
Go to your Doctor and he can give you a prescription H2 inhibitor that will lower the acid PH in your stomach WITHOUT harming the baby.
Congrats too.
It does tend to cure itself after birth.
Q: I am only about 5 weeks and have horrible heartburn and bloating already. Anyone else have this?
I made the mistake of eating mexican yesterday and have been miserable since. Heartburn has been horrible for a week. Tums are my new friend. Are there any eating patterns or types of food that would help this? i have been trying to just eat small meals/snacks throughout the day. Yesterday i met my mom for lunch so i didn’t stick to that. Even peaches gave me heartburn. i have limited myself to 1 cup of coffee in the morning. Could that cause it too?
A: Yes. I am now 35 weeks, but my heartburn started immediately after I found out I was pregnant and was horrible! People acted like I was crazy. They would say “there’s nothing pushing on you yet to cause heartburn”. My doctor explained that the pregnancy hormones relax slomach and throat muscles allowing the stomach acid to come back up, even that early in pregnancy.
Be prepared for it to get worse though. I was eating tums and rolaids like candy. Then about 20 weeks my doctor told me to take Pepcid AC, then around 30 weeks, the pepcid wasn’t working and she gave me a prescription for “Protonix” which has been wonderful!!
Good luck in your pregnancy!
Q: Is there a special type of doctor to see regarding heartburn?
A: If it is severe, a gastroenterologist is the one to see. If it is minor, a primary care provider should be able to help you.
Your heartburn, may be gatroesophegeal reflux disease, so be sure to have it checked out. Depending on the cause, they may prescribe some medications for you, and you may have to modify your diet.
The meds I can recall are:
1)Prevacid (works great, I take it, it shuts off the “gas” pump)
2) Acaphex
3) Pepcid
4) Zantac
5) Tagamet
6) and a whole lot more
There is a slew of meds for this, I cannot recall all of them, but the most effective, for reflux disease (helps with heartburn too) are the proton pump inhibitors (prevacid is one). Taking one of these, and modifying your diet should stop the problem.
Good luck. This problem can make a person feel terrible, and diminish quality of life. I hope you find something that works for you. Remember, each case is different, so what works for me, might not work for you. Be sure, to tell your doctor, if what you are taking, is not helping.

Q: Foods and drinks that can escalate heartburn?
Well, I just started the 14 day Prilosec treatment. Now I am wondering what foods/drinks I need to avoid – I know they are the ones I love!…..LOL
I love spicy food, beer, etc.
I am interested in knowing if there are any types of foods/drinks that are not commonly associated to cause heartburn that I should avoid?
Thanks
A: hot dogs used to give me bad heart burn when I was pregnant.
Q: What type of sinus and cough medicine to take when you have heartburn…?
What type of sinus and cough medicine to take when you have heartburn…?
I’m currently dealing with heartburn and with the erratic weather we’re having here in Seattle, I think I’m starting to come down with a cough and sinus issues.
Question is, what kind of medicine can I take to relieve the cough and sinus without making my hearburn worse? Is regular robitussin/vick 44 ok to take? Or is there something else that’s better for my situation?
A: I have never heard of a cough medicine causing or contributing to heartburn.
Getcha’ some Tums and some Tylenol Cold & Sinus.
