For more information about: acid reflux prevacid visit the Acide Reflux Disease and GERD site AcidRefluxDiseaseGERD.com today.

Q: Prevacid Acid Reflux pills unhealthy?
I have been taking prevacid acid reflux pills for almost a year now, i am supposed to stop in about a month or 2, but are they unhealthy? will they cause problems for me in the future even when i stop taking them?

A: Prevacid is a proton-pump inhibitor (PPI), which means it acts on the pareital cells of the stomach to reduce stomach acid production by as much as 90%+.

While there have not been a lot of studies on long-term PPI use, some of the general risks associated with long-term use include decreased vitamin absorption (specifically the B vitamins) and decreased calcium absorption.

Since gastric acid can help kill certain pathogens in your digestive system, long-term use can make you more susceptible to certain types of pneumonia and bacterial infections such as “c-diff” or Clostridium difficile.

Obviously, the above potential complications stop when you stop taking the Prevacid.

The vast majority of people who take PPIs never have adverse reactions or complications. I myself have been taking them for almost 10 years (although not consistently) and have never had any adverse reactions.

The reason most physicians want patients to take PPIs for over a year is that when stomach acid damages your esophagus it can take several months for the esophagus to heal properly. When the esophagus is damaged repeatedly by stomach acids, potential precancerous changes (Barrett’s Esophagus) can occur in esophageal cells.

Unless you have major health problems or are over 50, you probably shouldn’t worry about problems taking your Prevacid.

Q: which is better at treating acid reflux, prevacid or prilocec? or do they both just as effective.?
this is for over the counter medications.

A: It really depends on the patient. What works for one, may not work for another.

Try the least expensive one. If it works, great. If not, try the other one.

Q: 6 month old with acid reflux and on prevacid?
She still spits up all day long. She does not seem as fussy now that she is on the medicine. Is this normal to still be spitting up so bad and on the medicine? The dr tried Axid at first and then switched to Prevacid. Any advice would be great
It is very common to put a baby on Prevacid. They even make it for babies. She takes a pill that dissolves. I am also nursing so changing formulas would not be in order.

A: My granddaughter and grandson both were diagnosed with acid reflux. They both continued to spit up even with medication (one was on Prevacid and the other is on Zantac). The good news is that my granddaughter is now 1 year and is completely off the medication although she still continues to drink a soy based formula rather than cow’s milk. My grandson is almost 6 months old and still spits up quite regularly but does not have the pain and discomfort he had prior to taking the medication. You do need to tell the baby’s doctor that she is still spitting up – sometimes it is a trial and error situation with which medication works the best and you may not find one that totally eliminates all the problems. I know that this is stressful and causes you worry but take heart and be patient – things will get better as baby gets older

Q: Baby with acid reflux on prevacid?
My son has just been diagnosed with acid reflux and has been put on prevacid. Has anyone else’s baby been on this medication? How long did it take to work? Were there any side effects?
my son is 9 months old and was diagnosed by a pediatric GI specialist

A: my nephew was on prevacid until he was 10 months, no side effects and a much happier baby. My son (5 months) has been on zantac since 6 weeks and it has also made a huge difference and no side effects. Most out grow the reflux by 12 months and no longer need medication

Q: Is there a cure for acid reflux? Prevacid makes me feel bloated and uncomfortable. Help please?

A: you are eating something that is causing an out of control fermentation in your belly. the cure is not something for you to put in your body, but rather a removal process of the thing(s) that you KNOW are killing you (think really white foods), probably shouldn;t be eating meat more than once a day. heck! does anyone need it more than 10 times a month? get minerals and enzymes in your body in the form of clean healthy foods. whatever your diet.

sorry.
if you are truly looking for a cure.
a pill will never do.
anyone who tells you otherwise is just trying to sell you really expensive glue.

Q: prevacid not working for acid reflux baby?
My 6 week old has acid reflux and was given Axid .06ml, it worked for a few days only, then they put her on Prevacid 7.5mg,again, it worked for about 1 week and it is tapering off. The pediatrician said sometimes kids are put on both. what meds were your kids on, and what dose at what age?

A: My son was diagnosed with GERD at 6 weeks and was put on Zantac (1 mL) for 2 weeks. It was not effective, so they put him on Prevacid (7.5mg). That was effective for about 1 month, then they increased the dose to 15mg. He was on that until around 6 1/2 months and then taken off meds completely. I think once he started eating solids his symptoms improved greatly and he didn’t need the meds anymore.

Your daughter may need both meds for relief. Zantac and Prevacid/Axid work in different ways. Zantac is an acid blocker, which means it blocks the cells in the esophagus from feeling the acid when it comes back up. Prevacid/Axid are acid inhibitors, which means they prevent excess acid from forming in the stomach in the first place. Sometimes one single approach is not enough for a baby and they need both kinds of relief.

Good luck!

Q: when is the best time to take prevacid, acid reflux medication?

A: Directions should be on the Box, or ask your Doctor that has prescribed it. Usually it is taken first thing in the Morning and 1 hour before Breakfast.

Q: My 6 week old has acid reflux problem and has been put on prevacid started giving it yesterday?
she was on axid for a week but that didnt work so her ped put her on prevacid.
has anyone experienced this with their baby and how long it takes for the prevacid effect to show up. has ur baby grown out of the problem. please share.

A: Usually they will grow out of the problem after a while. The medicine should heal it up, but later in life they could possibly gain acid reflux again. i had it as a child and didn’t have problems with it untill recently but i was on zantac 75 and its prob the best I’ve ever been on.

Q: Is it ok to give baby gripe water while on prevacid for acid reflux ?
My baby is currently on prevacid ( 15mg ). He takes it once a day for treating his acid reflux. He is 6 weeks old. We were wondering if we can give him gripe water as well every day when he fusses during the day after feeds ? Is it safe to give grip water when on prevacid ?

A: Gripe water is all natural, so I can’t see how it could hurt. I was giving my boy zantac (because we all thought he may have reflux) and gripe water, and it didn’t harm a thing!

Q: How long will Prevacid take to help an infant with acid reflux?

A: A few days–the problem may never fully go away, but it should improve.

Q: what acid reflux medicine can I take? Prevacid or Zantac may interfer with the blood.?
thinning.

A: Talk to your doctor or pharmacist/chemist.

The exact interaction between meds such as Plavix and drugs like Prevacid is unknown. There’s conflicting evidence now.

Q: Anyone have infant on Prevacid solutabs for Acid Reflux?
My son also just got put on this for his neverending spitting up since birth…now 8 months old. Anyone using it that can give me hope. Also, need advice on how to administer it-syringe is difficult and it gets stuck in the nipple of the bottle. Thanks!

A: My son had acid reflux when he was an infant. I just gave him his med with a syringe. He got use to it. The med the Doc gave him was liquid, it was the most nasty smelling med I have ever encounter. You might want to see if they cn give him anything different I was told that my son would out grow the acid reflux. And he did, he was about three to four months when we took him off the medicine.
I hope your baby does too!!

Good luck!

Q: My 4 week old daughter was diagnosed with acid reflux. The doctor prescribed Prevacid. Any extra advice?
She’s been projectile vomitting about once a day, and spits up at least a little at every feeding. I’m breastfeeding, but I’m not sure what foods to avoid. I’ve heard tomatoes, garlic, citris, high-fat, milk, spicy, vegetables, caffeine… anything else?

A: I had the exact same thing when I was a baby — i was perscribed drugs but the best thing is time — she will eventually grow out of it no worries. Try giving her natural foods not canned — foods without preservatives. My mother used to puree fruit – banana, apple etc. good luck

Q: Is Prevacid (medicine for acid reflux) ok to take during pregnancy?
I don’t even know if i’m pregnant yet. Thats not my question. My question is: i take Prevacid every day for my Gastro esophageal reflux disease (heartburn times 100) i can’t live without it. my reflux is that bad. but if i get pregnant or if i already am does anyone know if it will hurt the baby? or if there is something else i can take? over the counter prilosec, tums, mylanta, –none of that works, its not strong enough. has anyone had this problem? if its really bad i will not take it obviously the baby’s health is more important but i need to take something. any ideas??

A: i dont know about you, you will want to talk to your doc.
but while i was pregnant, i was prescribed prevacid by mine.
my heartburn was so bad, they were worried it would cause long term damage.
i had a great doc. and i am sure he would not have prescribed something that would harm me or my unborn baby.

although it was prescribed toward the end of my pregnancy, it is possible that it would not be recommended at the early stages.

call your doc.

Q: Is prevacid safe? Any experience with acid reflux and pregnancy?
Hey guys, I was trying to conceive and went to my doc for chest pains. She put me on prevacid for 12 days to see if it is acid-reflux. I didn’t start taking it the first day and then the second day I found out I was pregnant, so I still haven’t taken it. I read online that it is a Class B drug, so it’s been studied in pregnant animals and seems fine, but hasn’t been studied in pregnant humans.

Does anyone have any pregnant experience with this drug? Are there any other acid reflux drugs that anyone is taking that are definitely safe for pregnancy?
thanks everyone for your responses. They’ve been really helpful!

also, I already have an organic diet. My husband and I eat very healthy — no partially hydrogenated oils, no fructose, no dyes or preservatives. I cook fresh food almost every meal and actually plan them out at the beginning of the week to get proper nutrition. It’s possible that this is not even acid reflux that I have, my doc just wanted to rule it out as a possible source of chest pain. If it really is caused by bad diet, maybe this is something else.

A: There are a few things that you can take that can help with your heartburn, that are natural. I take fennel seed, which you can find at a nutritional place, like GNC, but GNC doesn’t carry it anymore. I also use Papaya Enzymes. Not only does it help break down the proteins that you’ve eaten, it also helps with acid reflux, which I get a lot. The fennel seed is extremely effective at lowering the acids in your stomach. Check out the link below to see what else your doctor may be ok with you taking, while pregnant.

For more information about: acid reflux in babies visit the Acide Reflux Disease and GERD site AcidRefluxDiseaseGERD.com today.

Q: Acid reflux and flare ups with babies?
My 3 and a hlaf month old was diagnosed with acid reflux at a very young age and was put on Zantac. About once a month he acts like it hurts to eat formula and spits up a lot.Does this for about three days. My question is with being on a medication and following all the rules to treating a baby with acid reflux such as keeping them in an upright position after eating, can he still have flare ups. What I mean can he have days even with the med. were the acid relfux really bothers him?
Also he has seen a specialist to make sure his food was digesting alright and he is fine.
Sorry one more thing he is on Enfamil Gentless and that seams to work just fine.

A: This seems like my son’s exact situation when he was younger. I talked to my son’s Pediatrician about it my son still having flare up’s while on Zantac & they switched him to Prevacid which seemed to work a lot better. So maybe you should see if you can switch his reflux medication he shouldn’t have to suffer while on medication.

Q: If a baby has acid reflux could they choke in their sleep on the acid that comes up?
My baby acts like he is choking sometimes on acid, it’s not spit up, it is clear and alot of it.

A: It’s probably not acid so much as just saliva. It’s completely normal, and no, the baby won’t choke to death on it–if the baby’s coughing, the baby’s not choking, he/she is clearing the lungs. TV often portrays choking as people coughing, gagging, etc. But, if you’re truly choking to death, there will be no sound coming from you at all and you cannot breathe at all to make yourself cough.

Q: My baby has acid reflux; he is 7 mnths. old. What can help his pain without giving some sort of meds?
I do not want his stomach to not create the acid in which it naturally needs for proper food digestion by taking medications! What are some natural remedies? Also, he eats formula- nestle goodstart; what is the best acid reflux friendly formula for a 7 month old?

A: The best thing for the baby is to listen to your doc, because it can get worse and cause more complications.

Q: Baby acid reflux…? Could my baby have this?
I am just full of questions today.

Ok, so I have been doing some research about acid reflux in infants and I’m starting to wonder if my daughter could possibly have this. She does have a doctors appointment soon, so I will be asking her pedi. about his. In the mean time, however, I would like some opinions from you mom’s who have been through this. What do you think?

She is always spitting up. I know that she could just be a “spitter”, but I also know that this is one of the main signs of reflux.

She will just randomly start screaming. I have always chalked it up to she is just tired…but know I’m wondering if it isn’t something else.

Excessive drooling…oh man the amount of bibs we go through a day. I know that that could also mean she is starting to teeth. She is 4 months old…but again I know it could mean reflux.

She coughs when I lay her down. It isn’t like a hacking cough you get when you are sick, just like a little one when you get a tickle in the back of your throat. But could that just be post nasal drip?

I’m a first time Mommy, and my daughter is just 4 months. So we are both figuring this out together. What do you Mommies think?

Thanks!!!
It doesn’t mess with her eating at all….there have only been 3 times that I can count that she started crying during her bottle. But then everything was fine. She does arch her back and kick and flale around but that is usually when I am trying to get her ready for bed. So I will mention that to my dr.
Jamie Came Early! Thank you for that web site. She actually has a lot of what is on that check list. I’m going to give the pedi a call right now and see if we can bump up her appointment. Thank you all for your suggestions and opinions. It really has helped.
I love my aggie…I did have to stop breast feeding her when she was 3 weeks because it was making her sick. Thank you for mentioning that!! That really makes a lot of sense. Now she is on the Kirkland brand formula (it is Costco’s brand, but the ingreidents are identical to Simlac).

A: Jamie just got diagnosed with reflux at 4 weeks. Unless it interferes with eating, my ped won’t treat it. He’d pull off the breast and scream and arch his back.

I have a website I’ll post.

Here it is.

http://www.healthcentral.com/acid-reflux/coping-infant-GERD-42181-5.html?ic=506016

Q: How do I know if my baby has acid reflux?
She very often spits up like 20 minutes after she eats even if shes just laying in her crib after she eats. The dr. switched her formula, and I burp her often too!!

A: Well, if you baby is spitting up after each feeding she could have acid reflux. My son was diagnosed at 4 weeks. I was reading that in some cases acid reflux doesn’t even start till after a baby is two weeks old. But if the spitting up is clear or white and happens often between feedings then you should see her doctor. My son went for a swallows studies, where they gave him milk of magnesum so they could see it in his belly in the x-ray and we watched it come right back up after he drank it. It’s important that your daughter gets medicine if she does have acid reflux because it helps their flapper in the throat work better, and so it won’t get damaged for long term. Keep your daughter sitting up for at least an half an hour after each feeding and feed her less more often. Less food means less to throw up. And as far as the crib, find something to prop up one end of the matress with so she won’t be lieing straight on her back. It will help.

Q: Baby Acid Reflux and Rice Cereal…how often?
I am hesitantly trying the rice cereal to treat my 2 month old for his acid reflux. His pediatrician advised that I feed him 3ozs every 3 hours and to keep his head elevated for approx 30 minutes after feeding. This was not working. I asked several new and experienced moms/grandmothers. They advised the rice cereal mixed in his formula. Well, did so for the first time tonight. So far, so good. But no one has said how often I should do this. Is it only at bedtime or throughout the day? Also, should I ween him once it begins to clear up?
BTW…I used less than a tsp per oz unlike others saying 1 tsp per oz. Unsure of how such would impact his little belly.

A: My doc said my son has colic and a minor case of reflux. she gave me infimil A.R (added rice) formula which was helping a little. But switched him to premium instead and he is actually better. If u want to do the rice in the bottle, u should do it with every bottle because what it does is thicken the formula so its harder for acids to push it up causing ur little one pain. I leave him elevated all the time actually, he sleeps on his boppy pillow in his crib. Try burping him half way through the feeding. And if he wants to eat more than 3 oz or sonner than 3 hrs its ok to do that. I have heard doctors say not to deny ur little one food. Every baby is dif and have bigger appetites. My son is almost 3 months old and is now eating 4 oz about every 3 hrs. Good luck, I know its sad watching ur baby in pain.

Q: I think my baby has acid reflux have any parents or other dealt with this situation?
My son is 3 mo’s old he started refusing his bottle and crying while eating he spits after almost every meal and he barely want to eat at all. he has a doctor appt. in the morning but I just need to put my mind at ease right now has anyone had any experience with this?

A: I have a 2 month old son with reflux.

He cries after every feeding, and spits of several times during and after each feeding. If we lay him on his back, he spits everywhere.

He’s pretty fussy, but wants to eat all of the time. They say some babies with reflux don’t want to eat, and some do.

We elevated the head of his crib, hold him upright for 30 mintues after each feeding, use Dr. Browns bottles (and stir the formula, don’t shake it), and really nothing seems to help.

He was really bad with this when he was getting breastmilk, and it didn’t improve with formula. Our Dr. switched him to Nutramigen, which helps some, but not completely.

He was on Zantac & Reglan and it didn’t help at all. We just got a rx for Prevacid today, but can’t get it until tomorrow. Just today we tried thickening his formula with Rice cereal (under the advice and supervision of his doctor), and it seems to help a bit.

Our baby has a hard time sleeping, coughs a lot, gags and reswallows when he spits, and arches his back and head to the side.

We’ve been working on this for about 6 weeks, but we haven’t figured everything out yet.

I should mention that he was in the NICU for 9 days because he was breathing too fast, and then choked on some breastmilk and started to turn blue at random times and had to have oxygen to help him out. Even in the NICU, he wasn’t digesting his food correctly, but they thought it would fix itself. (My baby wasn’t early.)

He was born 6 lb 12 oz and is now 10 pounds even (at exactly 2 months).

That has been my experience with infant acid reflux.

Q: baby acid reflux?
I’m pretty positive my son has reflux.. He would fuss during a feeding every now and then, but not all the time.. he does just fine at night. A little while after a feeding, he’ll get cranky.. and when he is, he’s only comforted by sitting upright.. He doesnt not spit up too much, and doesnt vomit.. He makes high pitch squeak noises when he eats… We give him gas drops after each feeding, and sometimes gripe water when he gets fussy… i would rather not put him on meds ( because if it is reflux, it doesnt seem very severe).. But sometimes i cant deal with his fussines, and it seems as if he’s in pain.. He had thrush and a yeist infection for the past 2 weeks, and is on medication for that… had tummy problems, so we started using a laxative( dr. suggested)… I believe he has gas pains, so he’s on Enfamil Gentlease for fussiness and gas..

i dont want him to take in even more medicine.. what should i do? or is meds the best thing for him? he’s 7 weeks old
P.S he also stops breathing for a few seconds (as if to catch his breath) during feeding, when i try to burp him, he starts crying and soemtimes wont take his bottle back… someitmes chokes and coughes… He arches his back when he wakes up.. and doesnt sleep good all the time.. sometimes very hard to get him to take a nap during the day.. Sometimes sleeps for 5 hours at night… sometimes 2-3 .. Makes throaty noises.. seems as if he’s in pain Sometimes…

A: My daughter had it and the Dr gave her some Zantac for it. She had it because her esophagus wasn’t completely developed. He did say that some children do get it. As much as you don’t want medicine, it may help. It also may really be painful for your child. Her pediatrician did tell us sitting her up helps. So whenever possible, prop them up or make an incline in the crib or wherever your child is laying. Best advice, call your pediatrician. But there are over 20 reflux medicines. They don’t hurt your baby. Good Luck!

Q: Do you know where I could get reliable info on Baby Acid Reflux?
My 1-month-old daughter’s pediatrician just diagnosed her with acid reflux and put her on some medication. The reflux has been causing her to spit-up/throw-up so much that she hasn’t been gaining proper weight. On average, newborns gain about an ounce a day and my daughter has only been gaining about half that. She’s been on the meds for almost a week now and they only seem to help with the spit-up about half the time. My pediatrician (only one in town) is absolutely useless when it comes to getting information on this topic, so I was wondering if anyone knew any good websites on the topic that could give me some tips on ways to help her not spit-up.

Thanks in advance!
I am breast-feeding, btw.

A: Jessica.. my lil 8 year old had the same thing but then also had sleep apnea. were she would stop breathing. The best thing i can tell ya is to go to www.webmd.com and then type in pediatric acid reflux and it will lead you to where you need to be. i can only tell ya that my experience with it was horrible. my daughter threw up everything. I took her to a specialist out of town and they told me to put rice cereal in her formula. this causes it to thicken which helps the infant to hold it down. so istarted doing this since she was 3 weeks of age. when she turned 1 1/2 she started holding it down a lot better. but i do recommend putting in the rice cereal in her bottle. you will need to buy the cross cut nipples for her to suck it through or just cut a lil hole in the nipples that you are using now. if i can be of any future help let me know.

Q: Bed for a baby with acid reflux, GERD?
My baby has real bad acid reflux, doesn’t want to lay flat. She will sleep in the bouncer, travel swing, cradle swing, being held, and in the Fisher Price rock & play sleeper. She is getting to big for these items and is in need of something larger that will allow her to sleep on an incline. Any suggestions, she coughs too. The dr doesn’t have any advice. So what do you parents with older babies use?

A: I know I’m going to get all kinds of flack for saying this but my sons had reflux and I put him on their stomachs to sleep. I know they tell you that is a big no no but my grandma had 5 kids and all of them slept on their bellies of course you could prop them up with a pillow but thats an even bigger suffocation hazard. My kids also spit up a lot in their sleep so chocking was also a worry of mine that seemed more likely than SIDS. But if that makes you nervous they do have the wedges for babies to sleep on now that give an incline.

Q: Should babies w/ bad reflux still sleep on their backs?
I thought of this when chatting with someone whose baby has acid reflux.

I know these days, the trend is “back to sleep” — babies should be put to bed on their backs because it supposedly reduces the risk of SIDS (even though it can, at times, create a flattened back of the skull instead!)

My question is: what if a baby has reflux and spits up a lot? Should she still be put to sleep on her back while she’s still too young to roll over and change positions? When I was a baby, I spit up a lot, including in my sleep. Due to the fact that I sometimes awoke with a pool of vomit next to me (GROSS but true!), wouldn’t you agree that babies like myself should be put to sleep on their sides or tummies? Otherwise, they’d likely inhale and/or choke on their own vomit!! :O :[

Back in the 1970s, when I was born, I don’t think there was any “campaign”, one way or the other, about baby sleeping positions. But I’m sure glad my mom put me on my side and/or tummy!
To MrsZ — I don’t need to go to Google and “educate myself”. I’m describing what TRULY happened to me as a baby! My mom really did find me sleeping in a pool of my own VOMIT. What about that is so hard to comprehend?

Babies obviously don’t vomit in their sleep unless they have weak lower esophageal sphincter muscles, which in turn allows stomach acid and/or food to backflow up the esophagus and, in extreme cases, out the MOUTH.

This problem actually continued into childhood; it was worse than bed-wetting! And now I’m an adult with major acid reflux. Fortunately, though, at least it doesn’t happen in my SLEEP anymore! Gotta be thankful for small favors!

A: Both my son, who is now 4, and my daughter (6 months old) were reflux babies. Both of them started sleeping on their stomach when they were 2 months old. My dr said that even with reflux they should stay on their back, but they would literally spit up entire bottles and I was terrified of them choking.

My fears were affirmed last month when my 6 wk old nephew stopped breathing after “refluxing” while laying on his back. He didn’t even spit up enough for it to actually come up and out of his mouth, but just enough for him to choke on it.

I’d check to see what the pediatrician says, but I feel much better with them on their side or tummy. I just make sure to wait until they have enough head control to turn from side to side, and let them practice at naptime first.

Q: Want to avoid Pediatric Gastroenterology. How can I help by baby w/Acid Reflux besides switching formula?
We are gonna try Enfamil AR starting today. Dr visit is in 2 weeks for follow up.

A: There are a ton of meds out there that the dr can put your baby on, starting w/ the easy ones first like zantac and axid (they are weight based dosed so as your baby grows the dose has to go up) then the stronger meds like prevacid.

Honestly the best thing you can do for your baby is go to ta ped gi…
I am a respiratory therapist and a mother of a reflux baby… reflux is very dangerous for babies, it can cause numerous breathing problems for them, and eventually cause reccurent infections and pnemonias.

it is very important to get the proper testing and treatment for your child.
Another thing is 80-100 percent of children who are intollerent to cows milk are intollerent to soy so they cannot use any of the reg formulas and usually a formula like alimentum is best for reflux babies, the intollerence, allergies makes the reflux much much worse.

you can also thicken your babies feedings w/ rice cereal… up to 1 tablespoon per ounce of formula, dr browns bottles makes a cereal nipple (that is what we used w/ my baby it did great)

if the alimentium formula doesn’t work there are prescription formulas made out of amino acids called neocate and ellecare.. we used ellecare.. its 54 dollars a can, but very well worth it for your childs well being.

make sure your child is elevated for 30 min after every feeding also

there is an online support group for reflux parents

www.infantrefluxdisease.com

they offer alot of advice and info

Q: Baby Acid Reflux Question?
Hi everyone, hope someone ca help me out there. My baby is 2 months old and was recently put on nutramigen and zantac as she spits up frequently and seems fussy during feedings. Anyways, she was just switched yesterday and has only had 2 doses of the zantac plus she just got vaccinated as well. She is still spitting up..how long does it take for the new formula and meds to kick in and help her? The big difference that I do notice though is that she seems more comfortable even though it is still going on. Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you.

A: She is still going to spit up, but not as much. With my daughter it took about 3 or so days for the Zantac to start working.
Are you doing other things to help with the reflux?
Like keeping her in a some what upright position for about 30 minutes after each feeding.
Try feeding him less more often.
Did your Dr said anything about thickening his formula? My Dr suggested doing that and it helped my daughter to not spit up as much. Although you should talk to your Dr before doing it.
Burp her more frequently.

Also, when my daughter had reflux, someone suggested using Mylanta. I asked the Dr about it and he said it was fine to use and would help. You can contact your Dr and ask him about it and he can give you the correct dosage.

Q: Does your reflux baby sleep on tummy?
Since Sunday night my 4 month old has not been sleeping well-she normally sleeps 9-10 hours. When I put her in her crib now she starts grunting and kicking her legs like she is frustrated. I propped her up on her side and she finally went to sleep. Later I checked on her and she was on her tummy. On Monday we went to the MD for her checkup and he said she would be rolling over soon and I couldn’t stop her from sleeping on her belly then. She’s been doing it every night since, all night crying and kicking her legs. Last night, or this morning at 4 I finally rolled her on her stomach and she was out like a light. She lifts her head fine and is already in the jumperoo and exersaucer. It seems that is the only thing she wants, to be on her tummy. I have heard acid reflux babies are this way. Does your reflux baby sleep this way? She is already medicated for reflux, is not teething, didn’t have gas, and wasn’t cold.

A: My son is almost 4 months old also. He does have reflux and has had it since he was only a few weeks old. My son does sleep on his stomach. Its the only position that he will sleep in. We bought a Movement Monitor because I was worried about him sleeping on his stomach and the risk of SIDS. Basically is sets off an alarm if he stops breathing. I have yet to have a false alarm. My son loves sleeping on his stomach. I don’t see anything wrong with it as long as there isn’t any blankets in the crib. He can already roll over from stomach to back.

Q: Question for parents who have dealt with Acid Reflux with their babies?
Ok so after about a week of throwing up and spitting up my sons doctor diagnosed him with AR. He gave me some great tip: thickening the bottle with rice cereal, smaller more frequent feeding, keeping him elevated after feeding. He is such a good little boy and I am so thankful that he is not fussy with it. He hardly ever cries. But by looking at him I know he is miserable. Sometimes the spit up won’t come completely up and he kind of gasps for breath, sometimes it comes up with forse, sometimes think, sometimes 2 hours after he eats. Anyway, the doc said since he isn’t crying that he doesn’t want to prescribe medication. So here is my question: Even though he doesn’t cry but is clearly uncomfortable should I talk to the doc about reconsidering? Is there anything I can give him over the counter that will help? Any other suggestions that have worked for you?

Thanks in advance!

A: I really think you should avoid giving your baby medications, unless absolutely necessary….that is just my opinion. As your baby’s digestive system matures, this problem will correct itself. And even though he is uncomfortable, he isn’t crying….so it probably isn’t as painful as it looks. Unless the problem gets worse, I suggest just following doctor’s directions, and allowing time to do its magic!

For more information about: acid reflux diet visit the Acide Reflux Disease and GERD site AcidRefluxDiseaseGERD.com today.

Q: Any suggestions for an acid reflux diet please!?
I am trying to loose weight but alot of foods and the moderation are really hard on my stomach with my acid reflux. Even if I take my reflux meds I still don’t know what to eat.

Any suggestions?

A: Targetted weight reduction is quite difficult, some would declare impossible, however the one thing which definitely worked for me is wu-yi tea, it can be viewed in the resource box below, they have a limited number of free trials in stock, it has been featured in Fox News and CNN. I lost thrity pounds, it definitely does produce success!

Q: What can I eat when on a yeast free and lean meat diet? Acid reflux is bad and meds do not work. I am hoping?
if I go on this diet it will help. Any suggestions?

A: You can always eat fresh fruit and vegetables. However, don’t eat citrus fruits (oranges, grapefruits etc).

Q: What kind of diet should I have with Acid Reflux?
I’m trying to control my reflux with diet only because I really dont want to take meds. They make me feel worse sometimes, stomach wise. How can I change my diet to help me. Or is there anything natural I can do? I did apple cidar vinegar(Organic) and it made it worse?

A: Eat smaller more frequent meals
Avoid fatty, fried, spicy foods; chocolate; mint; onions; garlic; carbonated drinks; caffeine; tomato sauce; alcohol.
Don’t smoke
Loosen belt when eat.
Don’t lie down after eating.
Elevate head of bed by about 6-8″.
Keep a normal weight.
If you are taking certain meds it can make it worse, check with your MD.

Yes, apple cider vinegar makes it worse.

Google: mayo clinic>>diseases>>GERD

Feel better

Q: Whats a good diet to help prevent acid reflux?
I seem to get reflux from eating something as simple as a bowl of plain oats. Is there any special diet out there for you folks suffering acid reflux or GERD? Or is it more about the proportions you eat?

A: Typically, you want to stay away from acidic foods (tomatoes, citrus), and fatty foods. Acidic because acid is what’s hurting your esophagus, and fatty because it slows the transit of food out of your stomach….Other foods to avoid are coffee, chocolate, peppermint, onion, and garlic because these actually relax the sphincter between your esophagus and stomach, allowing the contents of your stomach to splash up into your esophagus. Proportion does play a role, too….smaller meals have less of a chance to back up. Weight is an issue too…the more fat in your abdominal area, the more is pressing up on your stomach. And some people have luck sleeping with the head of their bed elevated 6 inches or so (if they have problems at night). If you haven’t already, go see a gastroenterologist to check out your esophagus and stomach….make sure you don’t have any serious damage done by prolonged exposure to acid…this can lead to esophageal cancer if not treated with a simple pill.

Q: Acid Reflux Diets – Home Diets To Keep Acid Reflux At Bay?
Just looking for 3-4 easy diet tips to prevent or treat acid reflux naturally. Information websites would also be helpful.

A: 1. Get yourself diets rich in complex carbohydrates (breads, rice and pasta). They fix the excess acid in your stomach and give you an easy feeling.

2. Rid yourself of high-fat foods. These tend to stay in the stomach longer, causing it to produce more acid for digestion.

3. Chew your foods well and don’t rush on eating. 20 minutes for each meal is cool. Extract all the nutrients you can get from your diets.

4. Make sure to keep yourself in a straight position during and after eating, for least 45 minutes.

Q: It’s suggested I feed my lab a low fat low protein diet for acid reflux, any suggestions?
She’s getting into her senior years and I’m not exactly strapped with cash.

A: Recipes for Bland diet ; see link below: easy to cook:

Make sure you get a proper diagnosis from a Vet – As soon as you can afford the visit.
I would make sure a dog with an acid belly gets 3 small meals per day -
see here: some Vets use Tagament and a bland diet combo….

Please do see the VET when you can…

Q: does anyone have any meal ideas as i have to eat a low fat diet for acid reflux?
acid or silent reflux needs a low fat diet – no pastries, cakes, chocolates, eggs, white wine or spirits, no cheese, butter,

A: I refuse to buy a cookbook since I found www.meals.com. On the left there is a dropdown menu that says “I am looking for…” and one of the choices is Lower in Fat Recipes. They have 145 easy to make recipes…so you can decide what you’re hungry for!
And also…I found a great thing the other day. 1 banana, little bit of skim milk, 2 packets of equal, 3 ice cubes…throw it in a blender…you have a fat free milk shake. I also tried it with a handful of frozen rasberries (60 calories per serving…make sure you get them WITHOUT High Fructos Corn Syrup!!! This is the fat killer!). When I added rasberries, I put it in the freezer for a few minutes and it was thick…like ice cream!

Q: vegeterian acid reflux diet… safe foods?
what is safe to eat? anyone have a list?

i think eating too much meat has been increasing symptoms so i want to go vegetarian for a while.

A: UMM if you dont like it dont answer loser.

Q: Acid Reflux and diet?
My wife has acid reflux, we are heavily against drugs and big farma… i’m wondering if there is a good resource to find out what to do in order to change the diet to not have acid reflux. We are vegan which i’m reading is that meat is a big cause of it, but i’m wondering what else we can do… would just eating more veggies help? it is suppose to neutralize acid, so i would assume eating more veggies would work. Any help would be great.

A: Cut out the caffiene. I’m also vegan and have suffered from acid reflux/heartburn for years. Just recently I cut out all caffiene (coffee, tea, soda, energy drinks) and I feel amazing. Not only is my acidic upset stomach gone, but I also have a lot more natural energy and a better overall sense of well being. I’d also beware of acidic foods like tomatoes, onions, and garlic. Adding probiotics to your diet can also help with digestion issues. I suggest GoodBelly. Good luck and I hope your wife feels better pronto!

Q: Does drinking diet coke cause acid reflux?
Okay, been on a diet to help my acid reflux disease, and have lost 40 pounds, and it has helped immensly. I have however, started drinking around 3 diet cokes a day, and the last two nights, my symptoms have returned, to where it wakes me up at night and I can’t sleep.

A: It can the phenalalinine (I apolagize for spelling) does cause acid reflux and it can cause ulcers (holes in your stomach)

Q: My hubby suffers so bad with his acid reflux. He has lost lots of weight and needs to find out what will help.?
It gets hard for him to eat anymore.I am trying the acid reflux diet now.

A: I can soo help you. One day I woke up and could not swallow at all. After months and months and months 6 to be exact and 40 pounds lighter, 10 different meds, and thousand of doctor bills ……. I was given Nexium. I took about 3 more months for any type of relief. I would have him go to a gastro dr and discuss it.

Also this is very important. I lost my mind going throught this. Well not eating, but jello for 6 months did not help, but then the constant feeling like you were going to choke at any minute and going to die…I started having panic attacks. Then it became mild depression. There is a medical term for it. Something like: Depression and panic attacks brought on by a medical condition. Duh! I am now on Zoloft. I have been panic attack free for 1 year. I am so happy. I am able to eat almost anything and not worry.

I soooo understand how he feels. Please let him know that. You sound like my husband. No one would listen or help. He would lay in bed with me and cry with me. You have to be very very pushy with the doctors. I even went to another one, because the first one just wanted to put me on pills and more pills, but I guess the wrong one.

It is also important to know that this did not just come on. It has been happening for years and years. The top just finally came off. It will take time to heal. I would also suggest that he get a endosopy(misspelled sorry) done. They will put him to sleep and put a tube down his throat to see the damage. Just to make sure he does not have any other problems that Nexium will not fix.

One more thing. We did NOT have insurance. There are alot of programs out there to help. We had a clinic that I went through. It was really cheep and I then got sent to a specialist for hardly anything. Then you will have the endosopy done in the hospital and apply for assistance there too. Astra Zeneca pays for my Nexium. Then I went to the mental health for my Zoloft. I see the that doctor, now every 6 month for $5.00 a visit and my meds are $14 for a 3 months supply through K-Mart. You have to ask and search the internet.

I how that helps. Sorry for so much info. Maybe you can copy and paste this into a word doc and print it out. Be very persistant with everyone. It is a HUGE HUGE deal. He can die, not to scare you, but he can.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Q: What is Acid Reflux Diet?

A: Acid Reflux Diet is the most effective way to control acid reflux which may happen to people of all ages. Acid Reflux Diet will effectively recondition digestive system in the sense of to control the gastric acid production to digest food intake. Thus Acid Reflux Diet may prevent acid regurgitates into the esophagus which cause the heartburn as the most common symptom of acid reflux.

Q: What CAN I eat while on an acid reflux diet? I know what I shouldn’t eat to control reflux, but what CAN I eat?
I’d like to eat pasta, but I can’t have pasta sauce with it, so what can I put on it that isn’t fattening or acidic? I like rice, but I can’t use anything spicy on it. I’ve been eating chicken a lot, but it’s getting boring, especially because I’m so limited with what I can eat on it. I need some ideas, please, on what I can eat since I’m going to be on this low-fat, no grease, no tomato-based products diet for a while. I’m also having a hard time saying no to cola and coffee in the morning since I need something to get me going- any ideas? Thanks!

A: My dear friend has acid reflux. This is the website I use when cooking for her. There are a LOT of good recipes here.

http://heartburn.about.com/od/heartburnfreerecipes/HeartburnFree_Recipes_For_the_Acid_Reflux_Diet.htm

Q: I know what foods to avoid, but would like a list of foods good to eat with a vegetarian diet for acid reflux.

A: There is many things, most vegetables are alright as with rice and such if done in moderation. The easiest thing for you to do would have smaller meals, that is what I do. If you eat smaller meals and have a few (5-7) it will allow you to have larger portions of things such as carbs.

I am not a doctor, so either way you will want to talk to them, but this is what I have to say as a long time sufferer of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.)!

Three part answer: information, what not to do, and what to do!

INFORMATION!!!!!!
I have a very severe case of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.). I have had to go to the hospital for some of the heartburn that I have had because the pain can become overwhelming or your breathing can be effected. It can be caused by Smoking, Drinking Beverages with caffeine (My case with hereditary), Drinking Beverages with Alcohol, Stress, Anxiety or can be Hereditary

The good thing about G.E.R.D. is that it can be a temporary thing and can be cured. It is never a permit thing even if you end up with it for the rest of your life it has the ability to be cured.

G.E.R.D. is caused by too much acid being created in your stomach. This can lead to or cause ulcers, esophagus damage, heartburn and/or damage in the mouth. . Other symptoms that can be found in a few cases are dizziness, tingling in limbs, numbness of Limbs, Chest/Back pain focused on the left side (in most cases), and shortness/difficulty breathing.

WHAT NOT TO DO!!!!!!!!
In most cases, stress is a factor to the reflux if you watch what you eat and reduce some of the stress it will help. If you watch what you eat for about a week you should find relief, if you do not then that is when you definitely what to listen to the doctor. Things to watch for are as follows:

Fatty Foods
Citrus Foods
Oranges (Juice and fruit)
Lemon (Juice and fruit)
Foods That Contain Grease
Fried Foods
Potatoes (Starch)
Buffalo wings
Chocolate (including any Coco)
Caffeine
Smoking
Alcohol
Doughnuts
Brownies
Cake
Tomato Based Products
Lactose
Sour Cream
Cottage Cheese
High amounts of Carbohydrates
Roughage (Berries and Nuts)
Onions

WHAT TO DO!!!!
The two foods that I recommend is Black strap Molasses and Raw honey. The apple is better for night time reflux while these will work for just about all of it. What you will do is take about a tsp. of whatever one you chose. Molasses being the better because of strength and nutrition, but must be use to the taste.
I would also look to putting Cinnamon and Ginger in you diet, they have been know to help with digestion and will help you reduce the amount of acid needed to brake down food, therefore causing you to reflux less.

Q: Diet Pepsi and Acid Reflux?
Does Diet Pepsis cause acid reflux?

A: No more so than any other carbonated drink. Cut down on the amount of soda you consume and you’ll feel better. It could also be the aspartame that you’re sensitive to. Either way, stop drinking so much soda. Stick to water, or iced tea.

ETA: please. The phosphoric acid in colas won’t hurt you, or the FDA wouldn’t allow it. It’s the carbonation that’s causing your reflux.

Q: How to fall asleep faster with acid reflux?
I have acid reflux real bad!!! and I used to take a medicine for it but it made me sick one day so any ideas or answers to help me fall asleep faster.

A: Have you tried practically everything to get a better night’s sleep? You’re not alone. More than 1.6 million Americans say that they’ve experimented with herbal remedies, relaxation techniques and other methods to get to sleep, according to a recent study from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. But which really work? Researchers have come up with a few suggestions. Read on to find out what strategies experts say you can employ to get a better night’s sleep—starting tonight.

Try a cup of chamomile tea. This beverage contains glycine, a chemical that acts as a mild sedative, say researchers from Imperial College London. And since glycine is also a muscle relaxant, it may help reduce the pain of menstrual cramps. Tip: You’ll want to drink your tea at least an hour or more before bedtime if nighttime trips to the bathroom pose a problem.

Q: What kind of Medicines do they give babies for Acid Reflux?
I was just told that my 11 day old baby has Acid Reflux. What kind of medicines do they usually give babies for that and how do you give it to them?
The Doctors said he has Acid Reflux. I am wondering what medicines are given. Currently he pukes up every thing. We’ve tried all brand of formulas including soy and lactose free. Also tried breast milk. He pukes it all up.

A: My son was on Zantac for acid reflux. I was instructed to give it to him full-strength from a syringe. That didn’t work so well, so I did it just the way Beckers said.

Depending on how much pain it’s causing him, the doctor may not prescribe anything. There are also other things you can do to help alleviate the reflux:

-keep him upright for at least 30 minutes after eating
-feed him half as much, twice as often
-burp after every ounce or two he drinks (that’s the advice, but personally, it made matters worse for my son)
-incline the head of his sleeping surface 30 degrees
-over the counter gas relief drops, like Mylicon

I hope he feels better soon.

edit–I just read you additional info. How’s his weight gain? What did the doctors say they were going to do? Any more tests or anything? Did they say whether they were going to give him some medicine?

It’s my understanding (and my experience with it) that the acid reducers like Zantac don’t really keep them from spitting up, or reduce the volume of spit-up. I think they just neutralize some of the stomach acid so that when they do spit up, it doesn’t burn the esophogas so bad. I’m not a medical person, so I couldn’t tell you all about how the medications work, but that’s how it seemed to me.

Does spitting up seem to hurt or bother him? I’m not sure if you’ve already tried them, but there are formulas out there that are specifically made for reflux. Sometimes it’s recommended to add some infant cereal to the bottle to help weigh the milk down and keep it down. Of course, discuss it with your doctor before switching formulas or adding any cereal.

I really hope the little guy feels better soon!

Q: How do you get rid of acid reflux?
Without taking any medications, how can I get rid acid reflux?
I have it extremely bad. Had it since I was a kid.

A: You are absolutely right about not taking medications first. Medications would only help acid reflux symptoms and not the problem underneath.

I am a pharmacist but I also strongly believe in holistic approach to health.

Since you had for a long time, it most likely be coming from your food intolerance. You would probably want to invest into good food intolerance testing and a qualified nutritionist. This may be the only thing you need.

It’s important to eat healthy and organic, drink filtered water with mineral content and do breathing exercises that add enough oxygen to your blood to make it alkaline. You want your body to become alkaline to avoid any symptoms including acid reflux symptoms.

More on acid reflux symptoms:

http://www.journey-with-crohns-disease.com/acid-reflux-symptoms.html

As a quick fix, you can try half of freshly squeezed lemon in a glass of warm water on empty stomach in the morning. Yes, acidic lemon. Do this for a week and you most like will feel better.

I hope you feel much better soon.

Q: Are there any recipes for sauces, marinades or dressing for Acid Reflux?
My 12 yr. old daughter was diagnosed with Acid Reflux Disease yesterday… I can not seem to find any dressings or marinades suitable for her… are there any I am able to make myself or is there a web site I can go for recipes to help me out here at home?

A: Here’s a list of foods she can have, get creative, mom!

Q: What will happen if I leave my acid reflux untreated?
I’m a 14 year old boy, I’m pretty sure I have acid reflux. I haven’t seen any doctors in maybe 5 years. I’m scared. What will happen if I leave this untreated? Thanks, 10 points to the best answer.

A: I don’t think you should be guessing at something like this. Left untreated acid reflux can cause ulcers, bleeding of the esophogas and eventually lead to cancer. I don’t say that to scare or you or maybe I do. If you suspect something is wrong then you need to be seen by the doctor and expecially at such a young age. It may turn out to be minor and something you can control with a change in your diet. I do know firsthand the worse thing you can have to drink is soda or eating too close to bedtime.

Q: What is the best sippy cup for acid reflux baby?
My son has had really bad acid reflux since he was born. Now being 5 months old I would like to introduce a sippy cup to him. Just with a little bit of water he can try and get out of it nothing major but just to get familiar with the cup idea instead of the bottle. Any suggestions on what sippy cup is the best out there. He likes the one we do have that has little handles on it that he can grab on to. Thanks!!

A: i would get one with a plug- though he may have trouble with it. giving him one without may cause him to drink too much too fast and cause his reflux to act up- if you do use one with out a plug watch him carefully so he doesnt gulp

Q: How do you know if you have acid reflux?
I have had a few of the symptoms, but they randomly come and go so I am not sure it is acid reflux or something else. Sometimes I will feel nauseous, feel a lump in my throat and chest, throw up liquids, feeling like it’s hard to breathe and sometimes if I eat really spicy foods, my stomach burns. I am not sure because the symptoms sometimes go away for months so I assume it was something I ate, or just a case of indigestion. How can I tell if I have acid reflux or not?

A: “How can I tell if I have acid reflux or not?”

Well it sure sounds as if you do. The easiest way to convince yourself is a therapeutic trial with OTC medicine. Try Omeprazole 20mg (or Prilosec) twice daily for a week or two.

If your symptoms respond dramatically, the diagnosis is a near certainty.

-MD x30y

Q: I have grade 2 whiplash and also have acid reflux. How do I sleep more comfortably?
I was rear-ended in March of this year. A few days later, my chiropractor advised I had some soft tissue damage. Two months later, I woke up and stretched and thought I had a stiff neck but the chiropractor advised I now have grade 2 whiplash. My biggest problem is it’s worse in the morning but I have to sleep on two pillows as I also have acid reflux, which I am on medication for. Any suggestions for me?

A: document it all, call a lawyer

Q: What’s the difference between Acid Reflux & a “string” of phelm in my throat that I have trouble clearing?
Is Acid Reflux next?
Can it be controlled/reveraed with proper diet like some say?
Does anyone know the benefits of the O.T.C.called PREV/Acid/? What is the difference between it and PRILOSEC?

A: you need to go to the doctor you don’t have acid reflux acid reflux is when acid from your stomach reaches your throat

Q: Is being sick to ur stomach and dizzy a symtom of acid reflux?
After i eat sometimes(!) i get nausea and dizziness. It does not matter what i eat. but i know i have acid reflux and someone said that it may be the problem. i am going to see the doctor but i don’t know how i can maintain til then without ending up in the e.r.

A: Sounds like you may be diabetic.

Q: Can anyone suggest healthy snacks for someone with acid reflux?
I made a decision to start eating healthier over the weekend, by buying apples, oranges, grapes, and nuts, but my acid reflux has now started to kick in something awful. Are there any fruit alternatives I can switch too that won’t do as much damage?

A: Apple butter and crackers is my favorite. Here is some more information that might help you.

I am not a doctor, so either way you will want to talk to them, but this is what I have to say as a long time sufferer of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.)!

Three part answer information, what not to do, and what to do!

INFORMATION!!!!!!
I have a very severe case of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.). I have had to go to the hospital for some of the heartburn that I have had because the pain can become overwhelming or your breathing can be effected. It can be caused by Smoking, Drinking Beverages with caffeine (My case), Drinking Beverages with Alcohol, or can be Hereditary

The good thing about G.E.R.D. is that it can be a temporary thing and can be cured. It is never a permit thing even if you end up with it for the rest of your life it has the ability to be cured.

Foods That Contain Grease
Fried Foods
Chocolate (including any Coco)
Caffeine
Smoking
Alcohol
Tomato Based Products
Lactose

WHAT TO DO!!!!
The two foods that I recommend is Black strap Molasses and Raw honey. The apple is better for night time reflux while these will work for just about all of it. What you will do is take about a tsp. of whatever one you chose. Molasses being the better because of strength and nutrition, but must be use to the taste. What the substance will do is stick to the sides of the esophagus and do two things, one is heal and the other is protect.
On the healing end, both substances have a healing property in them, and as they sit on the walls of the esophagus they will heal it. This is also helpful if you have a sore throat in the morning from refluxing.
On the protection end, both substances are high in sugar and when acid that is refluxed comes up to that the sugar will neutralize it and it will not longer be a problem at that point.

I would also look to putting Cinnamon in you diet, it has been know to help with digestion and will help you reduce the amount of acid needed to brake down food, therefore causing you to reflux less.

Q: what light hot drink can I drink without getting heartburn or acid reflux?
I absolutely love my green tea and all sorts of tea. I love coffee too. I have recently come from hospital and need too spend lots of time at home but get acid reflux and heartburn as side effects from the meds. I really want to drink something light and hot but what can I drink that will go easy on my stomach?

A: Hi, heartburn can really be a pain, especially when it wakes you up in the middle of the night. One of the best things that can help, and this works really well for my mother is ginger tea. Ginger is known to be really helpful as an aid to digestive health. So definitely give that a go.

Green tea is also good as well.

You also need to focus on not what to drink. The two biggest culprits for making heartburn or acid reflux worse are caffeine, fizzy sugary drinks, and chocolate. The last one is a bit of a downer, but try to avoid in drink form and solid form.

I hope that was helpful, if you want a bit of information about some good natural cures for heartburn and acid reflux, take a look at the resource below, take care.

Q: Are there any medicines I can to take to help with my acid reflux?
I take Omeprazole every morning, but I forgot today. My acid reflux is really acting up now. What medicines can I take to make it stop? Is Pepto Bismol ok?
Omeprazole works well, but I forgot to take it this morning.

A: Just continue to take the omeprazole – if that doesn’t work after several months, you may want to try esmeprozole (sp?)…if that doesn’t work, you may need surgical intervention.

Q: What’s the best thing to do after acid reflux attack?
I have acid reflux bad sometimes I am supposed to take Nexium, but I often forget I need to know whats the best thing do drink/eat after you have acid reflux burn your throat whats something that will soothe it? And yes I know take the medicine before and you wont have that problem but this is when I forget

A: chew up a tums really good, swish it around in your mouth with some water thoroughly, gargle it around, and swallow it. I guess you could also use baking soda and water, as it’s a weak base, but I’d stick to using something alkaline like tums rather than a weak base, as it will buffer the pH closer to a neutral value rather than making your mouth basic.

Tums are made of calcium carbonate, the same stuff as limestone. They neutralize hydrochloric acid (stomach acid) very effectively

Do not brush your teeth for a half hour, stomach acid will soften the enamel temporarily.

Q: What could happen if you have acid reflux and don’t take medicine for it?
Awhile back my doctor told me that I have Acid Reflux and got me medication for it to take every day.
I did that for about a month, and eventually got sick of taking a stupid pill every day.
What can happen if I continue not taking that stupid pill? Any way I can get rid of it without spending an arm and a leg for the medication?

A: You can get rid of it by changing ur lifestyle a bit…..avoid spicy oily foods, avoid colas an other carbonated drinks. Eat atleast 5 hours before you sleep, maintain proper posture, dont slouch. Mebbe a glass of milk before bed might help coz milk is like an antacid.
If you dont take ur meds altogether, there may be complications like gastric ulcers and perforation of the stomach in severe cases.

For more information about: 11 day old newborn visit the Acide Reflux Disease and GERD site AcidRefluxDiseaseGERD.com today.

Q: How do you help a 11 day old newborn with constipation?

A: I thought my newborn had constipation because he seemed to strain and grunt. But when I called theoffice, they told me that constipation in newborns is when they pass pellet like balls of stool. If your baby is having a bowel movement then he is not constipated. Straining or grunting is not a sign of constipation. Also, if he is not having a bowel movement at least once in a 24 hour period, you may need to talk to the doctor who can diagnose it best.

Q: I am breastfeeding my 11 day old newborn. However, she falls asleep at the breast after 5 mins. of nursing!?
I am having to nurse every 1.5-2 hrs. because my newborn won’t nurse for 20 mins. Instead she nurses for @ 5-10 mins and falls asleep after offering one breast! Help. I am really trying to be successful at this. Thanks!

A: It is absolutely normal for a newborn to want to nurse that often. Remember, their tummy is very small at this time and they cannot take large amounts in.

It’s okay if she only takes one breast. If she nurses for 10-15 on one, next time start with the other. If she only nurses for 5-10 minutes, offer the same breast at the next feeding to make sure she gets enough of the hindmilk.

Newborns are also very tired, so they want to sleep a lot. You can try tickling her feet, rubbing her cheek, give her a bath, change her clothes or diaper, pretty much anything to try to keep her awake a little longer. But don’t worry, she’s probably getting plenty of milk…she may just be very efficient at getting the milk out and that’s why she’s done after just 10 minutes.

As long as she is gaining weight appropriately, there’s no need to worry.

Just continue to nurse her on demand. She will begin to take larger amounts and go a little longer between feeds as she gets older.

Q: 11 day old newborn is not having bowel movements for the past 3 days. She breast and bottle fed.She has been?
she has been having bowel movements since birth but the last 3 days she has not had one. I have given her water, suppositories, and still nothing

A: I think if even the supps don’t work you should try giving her a baby-size enema – something like Fleet Pedialax Liquid Glycerin (also known as Babylax – it is suitable for her age, same dosage). It’s an osmotic and it works locally, so it’s safer than oral meds (esp. if she needs help frequently) – and guaranteed to make her do a smelly in a few minutes!

Q: I have an 11 day old newborn that wont stop crying or sleep through the night but sleeps throught the day?
She sleeps through the day with no problem but when it comes to night she cant seem to stay asleep. She’s eaten, been burped, and has a clean diaper and just wont seem to sleep.I am literally going crazy and im ready to snap.Is there anyone who can help me out?

A: That’s just how babies are

Q: 11 day old newborn with a cold.?
My 11 day old son has a slight cold. I have been keeping the snot sucked out with a nasal aspirator and he is sleeping like normal and it seems to not be bothering him. Should I still be concerned at all? He has had a little diarhhea as well today. Things I have looked up about it on the internet have been scaring me, but I really don’t know if I should be as concerned as I am. has anyone else been through this?

A: First illnesses, even colds, are always scary, just because you’re not used to them. And I bet you’re tired as heck.

If you’re at all concerned, don’t hesitate to call the doctor. That’s what they’re for.

all the best.

Q: My 11 day old newborn won’t sleep, what can I do? Does anyone know what needs to be done?
She’s 11 days old. During feeding, she falls asleep and you have to wake her few times to get 10mins of breast. After feeding, burping and diaper change, we try to put her in bed. That’s when she wakes up. Then she’d roll her tougue as if she need more milk, but we know she had 20-30 mins worth and she’s full. If we leave her along to fall asleep, she’d cry. We try not to give pacifier for breastfeed baby until 1 mth. She cry for 2-3 mins and I go and pick her up, then when she’s drowsy I put her down. Within 5 mins she’s awake in bed again and cry. I keep repeating this 10 min cycle of crying, pick her up, sooth, set her down and she starts all over again. In several cases it lasts for 3 hours so by then it’s time to feed again. After another round of feeding, it starts again. Not until she’s really tired would she really then fall sleep.

I am out of my wits cos no music, cuddling, more milk seems to be working. I am really going crazy. Any thoughts or ideas? Help me please.

A: Oh I remember those days I know how you feel. Nothing really did work for my baby. I would have to stay up until 2-3am trying to calm her. I would fall asleep in the rocker with her in my arms after she finally would calm down. Sometimes I tried the bouncer in front of the tv with the volume off. She seemed to like the lights. If she is latching on to your breast well then I would go ahead a give her a pacifier. I did not want to give my baby a pacifier either, but it was and still is the only thing that would calm her sometimes. I do not think it is necessary for you to wait a month to give it to her (if latching well). But I would understand if you want to wait, but it could help. I had to walk the floors for a good month and 1/2 to sooth my crying baby. It worked some nights, but killed my back.
Do you feel heavy or engorged before she eats and then empty after? If so then I would think she is getting enough to drink. Her little nervous system will get in check soon. Mine stopped the crying at 8 weeks and sleeps pretty well through the night. If it doesn’t stop call the dr. Good luck!

Q: Questions about thrush in 11 day old newborn, breastfeeding, and how to treat it in both mother and baby…?
I had to have antibiotics when i was giving birth to my daughter 11 days ago, and 3 days ago i found out she had really bad thrush in her mouth! I never knew about thrush as I never had to worry about it with my other kids (luckily they never got it at all!!) but basically since then I’ve been told I have thrush in my nipples (as its painful to breastfeed and im getting stabbing pains etc when i do) and now my daughter wont breastfeed at all!!! We’ve been breast and formula feeding alternating for a few days before all this started and 2 days ago she just refused to feed off me because of her thrush and its heartbreaking!! Anyway, im pumping out the breastmilk but im scared to give it to her because of the fact that I have thrush (candida) and i dont want to spread the germs back to her when im trying to rid them from her mouth!! Shes on the Nilstat meds currently, and im using daktarin gel on my nipples to try and treat it that way… also started taking pro-biotics to help the production of the good bacteria. What i wanted to know is.. is it safe to take the oral thrush treatment you’d take if u’d have thrush normally to treat the thrush in my nipples knowing that the candida / thrush die off period is about 4-5 days and comes out in the liquids your body produces (including breast milk). Also, is there anything else i can do, take, give to her to get this fixed quickly as shes stressed, tired, and very sore in her mouth (her poor little tounge is so white!)

A: My bub had thrush too when about 10 days old, due to antibiotics I had for Cesarean. Use the daktarin oral gel for the baby; it says not for use under 6 months, but doc said this was just because of the way you have to give it to them, the drug itself is safe at newborn age. Just put a little on a clean finger and rub on baby’s tongue, roof of mouth, and cheeks, do this after feeds and apply to your nipple also. Clears in a couple of days. Worked wonders, bubs didn’t like me poking my fingers in her mouth but you gotta do what you gotta do.
Good luck

Q: my 11 day old newborn is constipated help!?
its been 3 days now and no poop, she is on soy similac.. tonight shes uncomfortable. kicking her legs tight n screaming, turning red, so i assume shes trying to poop, but nothing ,,, help

A: DO NOT give her syrup! you need to call the pediatrician and found out what they prefer. Your baby is not constipated just because shes not pooing. A baby who is constipated will pass small hard stools.
Call the pediatrician!

Q: What can you give a newborn(11 days old) for constipation??

A: At 11 days old you need to call your doctor. Sounds like your baby is not getting enough liquids.

Q: My newborn will not sleep at all during the day and cries for no reason. Any solutions or answers to ease me?
My newborn is 11 days old and for the past two days he has been awake for 7 hours during the day. This is not normal behaviour and am worrying, so was wanting to know if anyone has some answers to what it might be, or what I can do to help my little man to sleep?

A: If a baby cries inconsolably for more than 3 hours a day, that is called colic. The main reason for colic is acid reflux, which is treated with zantac.

So see your doctor about getting your boy some antacids.

Whether or not you choose to have your child self soothe you need to deal with colic correctly. Cuddling and cooing at an infant won’t cure their acid reflux, and laying them down to sleep doesn’t cause it.

Q: my newborn he is 11 days old and he is havin problems pooping already its really hard is there anyting i can?
do anything to help him go or anything because he crys so hard and i feel bad

A: Abdominal massage and bicycle his legs.

Q: Did your newborn (like 11 days old) have weird bumps on her head that developed after birth?
My little girl has a couple of weird bump type things on her head, is that just the plates coming together or something? Thanks
It is not really a soft spot or on her nape, it is on her upper forhead/head area and long and hard…..plus another one that is a small pea sized bump behind her head…..strange??

A: you mean at the nape area? my son has that little bump because they use their equipment to pull him out. As day goes by, it gone now

Q: What is wrong with my 11 day old daughter’s chest?
I have a 6 year old daughter, a 4 year old son, and now my just turned 11 days old daughter. When my 6 year old was born, her nipples were a little swollen but it went away. I noticed on my newborn that she basically has little breasts and that if you try to make that swelling go down by gently pressing down, what looks like milk comes out. I remember reading that this was normal, but it’s freaking me out. I’m wondering if that could be hurting her too. Has anyone else had similar?

A: It’s normal and should go away with in a couple more days, it’s from the hormones that were in your body and in hers and now she’s produced milk, yes milk it’ll go away so don’t worry. If she isn’t crying I doubt it’s hurting her.

Q: Is it possible for a newborn (1 week old) to fake cry already?
I thought he would be too young for this… but I really think he is already fake crying sometimes just so I will pick him up.. like he will be perfectly fine one minute and then just start crying, with no tears, and nothing will be wrong, and it sounds really fake, and he stops as soon as I pick him up..

Is it possible for a newborn to do this? He is only 11 days old but has been doing it for a few days now.

A: Fake crying is not something a newborn knows how to do. Babies that age have no other way to communicate their needs. If he is crying and then stops when you pick him up, he is telling you he needs to be held, or he may be hungry. He’s not manipulating you. As frustrating as it can be (my son was the same way) at that age, you just have to be there for the baby and give him all the attention they ask for. Right now, you are building a trust bond with your son. If it gets to be too much for you and you feel like you just can’t handle it another moment, or you feel like hurting him out of frustration, put him down in his bed and close the door. Go to the other end of the house and take a small breather. Once you’ve gathered your composure, it will be much easier to resume. Motherhood is no easy task, but it is incredibly rewarding. Things will get easier, I promise! Best of luck to you!

Q: breastfed newborn vomitting once a day normal?
My daughter is 11 days old and the last 2 days she has vomitted at some point. She sleeps great has regular diaper changes very little spit up and she’s always happy. She does get the hiccups a lot but other than that she’s great. Should I be worried about the random vomitting since everything else is great and she is gaining weight like she is suppose to? Its been 5 years since I’ve had a newborn so I’m just concerned.

A: Vomiting or spitting up? Projectile vomit which empties her stomach may indicate a problem, but some of the milk coming up is perfectly normal.

Q: Did your baby have any trouble when starting…?
…solids? For example did the first solids cause gas, upset tummy, irritability, night-time wakings?

Our daughter will be 6 months on Thursday so we decided to start solids. We decided to start with oatmeal cereal over rice because I heard rice can cause constipation. We gave about a teaspoon on the 1st day and a tablespoon on the 2nd.

In the afternoon on both days she got quite fussy. The first night she woke 3 times (when she normally sleeps through the night) and last night she woke 5 times.

Have you ever experienced this when starting solids? Could it be that her system is not quite ready (she did have acid reflux)? Would waiting a couple weeks make a difference or should I just try a different food (I’ve stopped altogether for now). Thanks!
To be clear – I started with oatmeal BABY CEREAL, not regular Quaker oatmeal. I’m not crazy! : ) lol.

A: It is quite common for babies to have some digestive issues when anything besides breast milk and/or formula is introduced. It may be a sign their system is not ready for it, but it may just be that their system is a bit sensitive to the new-ness. It is not necessarily the rice cereal that causes the constipation, but simply the introduction of solids. I would try the rice cereal first as it does have less incidences of irritation to the maturing digestive system. Think of it this way, there are 3 teaspoons in a tablespoon. You introduced 1 tsp one day and the very next you offered 3 times the amount she had the day before. If you want to stay with oatmeal, that is fine, but offer her only 1 teaspoon for several days before increasing it slightly to 2 teaspoons. Many parents and physicians have specific theories on beginning babies on solids, but truthfully it doesn’t matter much what first food your baby has. Sometime in the next 6 months she will likely begin to eat just about everything you do so that around 12 months she’ll be having 3 meals plus several snacks throughout the day. Breast milk and/or formula can easily provide adequate nutrition for proper growth and development until a baby is 6-9 months old and sometimes even older. There is no real rush to introduce solids too soon. You could either offer her one type of food in a small quantity for a few days and see how that goes, but if she still has problems, waiting a few weeks before trying again would be a good choice.

Q: Cereal in bottle, what kind???
My son (4 months old) recently started on rice cereal mixed in his bottle due to Acid Reflux. It has helped tremendously, he stoped spitting up and having projectile vomit. He still spits up but its like normal spit-up now. He doesnt scream and cry with every feeding now. Thank god!! But now he’s getting constipated and not having as many wet diapers. Should I switch to oatmeal?? He’s getting rice right now. I’ve heard rice can be binding and cause constipation. Is it ok for him at 4 months to switch to oatmeal?? Or is there another kind I should try before oatmeal?? And is it ok to put others besides rice in the bottle?? I need some advice please. First time Mom, and I’m just not sure about cereal. Thank you tons!! And please dont tell me not to put cereal in his bottle, I would rather do that than put him on meds, besides its been a complete turn around, he’s a completly different baby now. Before he jut seemed miserable all the time. Thanks!!
Why isnt it good in a bottle?? I seriously need know thats why I asked. Thanks
I tried the spoon, but he’s not ready. My pediatrician told me to do the cereal in the bottle.
Ok, I’m not asking people to tell me its not a good idea, I’m asking if I should switch, no one else but me and my pediatrician knows what better for my son. Like I said he’s doing alot better, finally gaining weight, and keeping it down, so I really would appreciate for people not to tell me its not a good idea, because as his Mother I know thats best right now!!! THANKS!!!
He’s only been on the rice cereal for 5 dyas.
TM::::::

THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE ADVICE!!!!!!!!

A: I would give the rice cereal a little longer. My pediatrician recommended only one teaspoon per bottle every bottle. We just had to switch to Similac Alimentum for our daughter but the teaspoon of rice still goes in with it. It has helped with the spitting up huge amounts of formula and gagging from the acid taste. I think oatmeal would be too thick for now. You can always try a rectal thermometer with a lot of vaseline to help him go potty. I was weary about putting cereal in my daughter’s bottle but I will tell you that she is doing much better with it.

Q: Stomach problems . . . . . . . . ?
I’ve had stomach problems for the past two days and I don’t know what the problem is. I’ve been throwing up and was running a fever last night. Please help?

A: Stay on the B.R.A.T diet. Bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast. it helps with this kind of sickness

Q: Stomach Problems?
a few months ago i would have a can of Vault soda and I would get remendous stomache aches. So I stopped drinking it and i havent gotten a stomache ache since. I drank a can of mountain dew today and my stomache killed! it went away and subconciously i just drank anohter can of mountain dew, several hours later, my stomache kills! i dont know why, it’s never done this before! diabetes runs in my family and i read somewhere that certain blood sugar levels can cause stomach problems, i dont know how true this is? is there anything else in the soda that can cause stomach problems?
low acidity?
sugar?
caffeine?
sodium citrate?
sodium bezoate(to preserve freshness)?

Please help! my stomach kills!
i eat a lot of healthy food and had about 40 ounces of water (a little less than six cups) and ate a healthy dinner so

A: ask a doctor?

Q: stomach problems?
i have been having problems with my stomach since last September. my stomach is very active and very loud, although there is no sever pain, there is a dull pain and i become very drained as it can last for approx 3 hrs. i become neuseas, sweat and visit the loo quite a lot. i also take a headache which again is not severe, just dull pain to front of head. i have been to the doctor twice and various samples have been taken but nothing has been found. i am middle aged, eat a fairly good diet and have always been in good health, but over the past 12 months i seem to be piling on the pounds, does anyone have any suggestions as to what it might be.

A: its inevitable to put on weight in middle age as metabolism slows down. however if u feel its due to medical problem then need to see doc again and ask for 2nd opinion. u could be suffering from something like irritable bowel or diverticulitis but u would need to have tests and have it confirmed . the other thing it could possible be i guess is an allergy does this happen every time u eat a certain thing? it would be worth keeping a food diary and noting when u have these attacks and showing it to the doctor. hope u manage to get it sorted.

Q: STOMACh PROBLEMS?
my stomach has been hurting.where my surgery line is. but i had surgery when i was 5 im now 17. everytime i take a sip of something it burns and kinda makes me tense up. the surgery line is 2 inches above my belly buttom and a little to the right. whats wrng? i had surgery because everytime i swolloed sometime it came back up

A: ahhhhhhhhhhh i dont want u to die =’[

Q: STOMACH PROBLEMs?
my stomach has been hurting.where my surgery line is. but i had surgery when i was born. im now 17. everytime i take a sip of something it burns and kinda makes me tense up. the surgery line is 2 inches above my belly buttom and a little to the right. whats wrng? i had surgery because everytime i swolloed something it came back up. im really worried sometime is badly wrng. even though i am going to docotr in a hour i still wanna get a idea whats wrng

A: ur tummy is gonna die

Q: What do I do about recurring stomach problems?
I,ve had problems for a few weeks with pain and vomiting from my stomach and oesophagus. Its no fun and I can,t just eat what I want. A couple of times my stomach has cramped and thrown back contents after some food like salads. How long does inflammation take to heal up?

A: Jul id e, Have you been tested for acid reflux disease? It sounds like it, I had to be tube fed the whole year of 2007, I could not keep anything down and as it turned out I had it, I would throw up food I had eaten the day before, now my diet is very strict. Find a gastric doctor he will go down your throat with a small camera thru the esophagus and see what the problrem is, don’t worry you will be asleep, I would go before it gets really bad. Good Luck Rita V

Q: What should I do in order to prevent having stomach problems when traveling in Mexico?
I am planning to visit Mexico for vacation. And everytime I go I get stomach problems and I want to prevent it from happening again. Should I have some vaccines or what other things should I do?

A: This is what I do when traveling and so far I’ve had no problems.

Try to drink bottled water (club soda or mineral water). Also use the bottled water to brush your teeth.

Clip your fingernails short and wash your hands often, be sure to clean under nails with a brush.

Eat food that has just been cooked and be sure it’s been cooked thoroughly. Avoid street vendors unless the food is piping hot. Avoid any raw fruits or vegetables unless you can clean them in safe water or peel them.

Drink a couple of glasses or white wine before or with meals. White wine lowers the PH of the stomach and makes it harder for any bug to survive.

Q: What is a natural cure for stomach problems and ulcers?
I have had stomach problems since a small boy and antacids and etc no longer help I want to find a cure.

A: FORGOT…TRY ROLAID SOFT CHEWS..MY HUSBAND GETS REALLY BAD STOMACH PROBLEMS AND THEM ARE THE ONLY THING THAT HELP HIM! HE WAS EATING LIKE 5 OF THE REGUAL ROLAID AND THEY DID NOTHING, YOU HAVE TO GET THE SOFT CHEWS THEYA RE THE BEST,GOOD LUCK:)

—Fresh cabbage juice is an excellent ulcer treatment. It produces an amino acid that increases blood flow to the lining of the stomach and helps to strengthen it. For those who prefer eating cabbage, only raw cabbage should be used to be effective.

—Active Manuka honey is another effective treatment for ulcers. This raw honey may be purchased in health food stores. Honey has been used for hundreds of years as a topical preparation to promote the healing of wounds. Ingested, it heals and strengthens the stomach lining

and kills harmful bacteria.

—Unripe plantains promote strong stomach linings by producing a mucoid substance that coats the stomach lining, giving it protection against acids. Bananas offer protection in the same manner.

—Eating a diet that is fiber-rich is an added ulcer protection. Fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains produce substance which help to protect the stomach lining.

When a person who has peptic ulcer disease is taking any regular medication, either over-the-counter or prescribed by a doctor, a physician should be consulted before embarking on any self treatment program because of possible drug reactions
.

Q: Any way to prevent chili peppers from causing stomach problems?
My girlfriend recently moved to China. Although we previously ate lots of spicy foods in the U.S., she has found that the small red chili peppers in many Chinese foods (especially Hunan food) consistently give her stomach problems– even though she loves eating it. The Sichuan pepper corn does not have this effect.

Since the red chili pepper is widely used in China, it’s hard to avoid when living here.

Is there any remedy? Anything you can eat before, during, or after chili peppers to avoid stomach upset?

A: Mexicans can eat hot chilis, they have been known to drink milk or eat other dairy products to counter-act the heat. I would advise not drinking raw milk as the chili spice can interact with natural milk enzymes resulting in painful gas and cramps. If you go to an Indian restaurant, they usually have a container of raita, a yogurt salad, that is very good for cutting the heat. I always get a small bowl of it before I eat a bite of anything and have it just in case I start burning. I had heartburn problems many months, and found out that taking a spoonful of real honey in a cup of warm water and drinking it took the burning away quickly.

Q: What is the best cookbook for someone who needs to eat healthier due to stomach problems?
Looking for a good healthy cookbook. Two relatives have stomach problems (GERD, etc) and now my stomach is starting to act up. I try and eat healthy already but should cut down on acidic foods.

A: Any of your favorite cookbooks can be used. Just begin to play with altering the recipes by eliminating and substituting ingredients that you can not have.
Most “conditions” have web sites that have suggestions and quite often recipes that will help. Well I checked and, well to put it bluntly there is not much info on recipes and from what I saw of what you should avoid there wouldn’t be much of a cook book.
The one thing I did see that you may want to try, if you are not already is to eat smaller portions more often.
Since you know what effects you the most I would try to adjust some of you favorite recipes and see if that helps.
Sorry couldn’t be of more help. Hopefully you can help prevent the actual diagnosis by watching what you do now.
Good luck~!

Q: Can a small cyst be related to stomach problems?
I’ve been having terrible stomach problems, loss of appetite and significant weight loss recently with stomachaches with every meal. I also recently found a small cyst behind my ear. Could the two be related?

A: could be but doubtful unless its stress, go to the doc about the cyst

Q: What could be causing my stomach problems?
I have been having problems with my stomach for about 2 months. I am often nauseous all day. I have gotten heartburn a few times and thrown up into my mouth a few times (I know gross!). I also burp a lot. I’ve tried to notice if certain foods make it worse, cut back on smoking, etc. I did notice eating sometimes relieves my stomach for a few minutes. I have a doctor appointment in 2 weeks if this doesn’t get better. I think it could be an ulcer or GERD. Any ideas??

A: Until your appointment take something like gaviscom after eating. If your symptoms disappear this will be helpful info for the doctor.

Q: Can healthy diet and exercise really help with stomach problems/noises?
For the last year I’ve rarely eaten healthy, and rarely exercise. I’ve heard that if you start exercise and eating more nutritiously, then the stomach problems/noises will settle down.

Is this true?

My stomach makes these noises like gurgling. And sometimes I feel gassy as random times and my stomach makes these weird deep sounds.

A: yes

Q: what could the hospital do for stomach problems?
for 2 weeks now i’ve been having problems eating, im constantly nauseous and as someone who loves food, i’m disgusted by it. today i had a normal lunch, and felt disgusting after, and for dinner i had very little mashed potatos and bread, and now my stomach acids feel like they are ripping my insides apart. i feel like i havent digest food in 2 weeks. im getting worried, and considering the hospital tonight but what could they possibly do for me?

A: Dehydration is a possibility ~ some of the symptoms of dehydration are puffy bags under your eyes.. actually puffiness anywhere in your body, dark circles under your eyes, dizzy spells and loss of balance, constant yawning, headaches and migraines, nausea, cramping, constipation and bloating and foggy thinking, irritability and moodiness….. :0)

Are you sure you aren’t just dehydrated buddy?? Expecting your digestive system to digest food and transport essential vitamins and nutrients with no water in your system is an extremely huge ask ………… Water is imperative to life. Without water your body will have a terrible time breathing, digesting food, transporting nutrients, lubricating your joint sockets etc.etc.etc.etc……… nothing substitutes for water. your body needs at least 2 – 3 litres of water daily to function efficiently Geez, we need at least 2 litres daily just to maintain aspiration (to breathe)!! so drink up buddy.

Increase your intake of fresh filtered water 20 minutes before or after meals so as to enhance digestion rather than interfere with it …………… if you drink fluids during your meals it will only serve to dilute your digestive juices and hinder digestion.

also, try to cut back on drinks such as coffee, tea, alcohol, sodas and soft drinks (if you drink any of them) which will all do great job of dehydrating you and also of robbing you of your precious Bcomplex of vitamins which are so essential for healthy neural, immune and digestive functioning.

take care ofyou

peace baby
♥

Q: Does a goldendoodle have stomach problems?
Does a golden doodle have stomach problems. I have a goldendoodle and she does. Does it occur normally?
Just to let everyone know, she is only 2 things, a golden and a poodle.
She isn’t a mutt.
A mutt is a dog with many many different kids of types in it. A goldendoodle is only 2.

A: Sorry, but a goldendoodle is a mutt. Any dog that is more than one breed is a mutt or mixed breed. Most these ‘designer’ breeds are bred in puppy mills and/or backyard breeders trying to make a buck off people like you. So, the pups are from poor quality dogs, raised in tiny cages, taken from their mothers and sibs way too young. It’s amazing they live at all and, yes, most have some sort of health problems. Most have many health problems over the course of their often times short lifes.

Q: Sour stomach?
Are there any home remedies or random ingredients you can find around the house to get rid of a sour stomach fast? Give me as much detail as possible please.

A: Yup, a shallow teaspoon of baking soda in a large glass of cold water, stir well, drink fast. You’ll probably burp some, too. I don’t mind the taste at all, but if it’s too salty, you’ve put too much soda in the water. Just dilute.

Suck on peppermint candy. That helps, too.

I’ve heard that people have had acid stomach relief from drinking a teaspoon of vinegar mixed into a glass of water, but I couldn’t get past the smell of it.

Twists. Yup, stand up, put your hands on your hips, and twist slowly. That seems to help “get your stomach going” and might help.

Good luck!

Q: sour stomach?
What meds is best for dour stomach? I have to leave to go on a long trip, and I need to get something for my stomach. My stomach is really sour

A: Hey, ginger is really good for stuff like that, they sell tablets or you can get it in the form of tea, or buy the ginger root and make your own tea- just peel the root, cut up a little, boil, drain and drink up. Very good for your stomach, it has been really helpful to me at least. Also, before the trip make sure you eat some light food, nothing greasy or hard to digest. Toast is perfect, some rice, an apple, banana…Best of luck!

Q: Sour Stomach?
zi hve been feeling horrible since this morning with a very sore stomach. I dont know whats wrong but I have been throwing up, burping a lot and some bathroom problems. How do i fix this?

A: Pepto Bismal or any over-the-counter medication that’s meant to deal with sour stomachs. Make sure to drink lots of fluids so you do not become dehydrated from the diarrhea I’m assuming you have.

If you develop a fever or are not feeling better in 7 days, see a doctor.

Q: What can I do to lessen the discomfort of my sour stomach?
Every morning I have a sour stomach. I fill like I want to vomit since I have so much acid in my stomach. What could be the cause of so much acid in my stomach. I eat before I go to bed. I am usually stressed but somedays when I don’t have anything planned, I still have a sour stomach. Will drinking milk all the time help, Tums, Pepto Bismol?

A: Try pepto-bismal or change your diet

Q: How can i cure a sour stomach?
i have a sour stomach and i took pepto bismol but it’s not helping. any other ideas?

A: Pepcid AC or prilosec will help with this, also look at what your eating….

Q: What does having a “sour stomach” mean?
I saw a little boy complain to his mother about having a sour stomach and although I can assume it is some kind of digestive problem, I do not know what it is exactly. Is there a medical term for “sour stomach”? How can it be cured? And are there any alternative home remedies for it? Thanks.

A: It ’s just an old fashioned way of saying you have an upset stomache.

Q: My allergies have been acting up a lot lately, could this be related to my sour stomach and lack of appetite?
I’m a healthy middle aged guy, not overweight, that burns a lot of calories through the day, and I eat well too. But lately I have no appetite, just sour stomach. I have been taking antacids which haven’t worked and Benedryl, which has worked. Has anyone heard of a connection between sour stomach and bad allergies?

A: There is no such connection. Benadryl is an antihistamine and as such has mild “anticholinergic” effects which means it may act to cut down on the secretion of gastric acid. You can get a more effective acid blocker otc such as cimetidine, famotidine or ranitidine or even try a stronger blocker like Prilosec or Prevacid, also otc but more expensive.

Q: Does anyone know about sour stomach problems?
My husband has been having problems with sour stomach. He burps this nasty egg smell all the time. He was having problems like once a month but it is a weekly problem now. The doctor said its just normal sour stomach. I just don’t see how it can be recurring this frequently. He has heart burn too but the biggest problem is his stomach. Gas and the burping.

A: The most important thing is that your husband needs to start keeping a food journal. Its difficult, but its important to see if there is a food allergy. I have the same problem, and i am working through all the different reasons. A nurse friend of mine thinks i have an allergy to gluten, Celiac Disease. The older we get, the less our bodies can handle certain food. It could be stress, fried foods, dairy, breads, time he eats. The quick cure is pepto-bismol. It stops the sour smell and eases tdiarrhearea. A lot of these conditions are hard to diagnose, that’s why keeping a journal you can push the dr into looking further into it-otherwise they will laugh, give you some tums, and cash your check for the visit.
Hope this helps-and good luck!!!

Q: What is a quick fix remedy for curing “sour stomach” the day after drinking alcohol to excess?
I drank way to much last night and today I have that terrible feeling in my stomach that doesn’t want to disappear. I took Pepto and drank some tea but neither helped. Any remedies that have worked for you in the past? Thanks in advance.

(I also asked this in Health section, but I figured I would give it a try here also.)

A: A good greasy breakfast & a bottle of Gatorade to replace the electrolytes.

Q: Whats safe to take for sour stomach during pregnancy?
i went to the dr and she told me i had a stomach flu. and its VERY painful, it hurts my belly, and i have diarhea, which is nasty i know but everyone goes through it.. right.

n e ways, its been going on and ive been resting and drinking juice and water but it still hurts. so is there n e thing i can take that might make me feel better, or at least make the stomach ache die down, or get rid of the diarrhea?

A: rolaids. plus they are much tastier than tums lol

Q: Is orange juice okay to drink with a sour stomach?
I have low potassium levels, and my stomach has been aching.

I just got back from the ER and they said I threw up blood because I was puking too hard.

But back to the question, would it be okay if I drank orange juice at all? Is there anything that’ll help my stomach that I can drink?

A: I wouldnt..orange juice has a lot of acid in it that will probably make your stomach worse

Q: 6 months pregnant and sour stomach pains?
I’m 6 months pregnant and have been feeling like crap today. My chest is aching and there is a sour feelinmg in my stomach, like someone is grabbing me by the pit of my stomach and twisting. Anyone else ever feel this or have a clue what it is?

A: It could be all your ligaments stretching or you could be coming down with something. Best to get it checked out with the dr if you arent sure and put your mind at rest.

Q: can you use lemon juice for sour stomach?
I need something for sour stomach and have no money to get nothing and need home remedie I also need home remedies for flea bites I have used over the counter creams I used about 3 diffrent kinds and nothing works. Need help between my sour stomach and me itching because I have a lot of flea bites do to going over my sisters house she lives on a farm and fleas are bad I am suffering I am also vary tired do to scratching a lot

A: You could try milk for the sour stomach.

Q: What can I take for a sour stomach and diarrhea while pregnant?
I feel really yucky and I’m about to head to cvs to get some medicine. I don’t remember what’s safe for those conditions while being pregnant. If someone could tell me it would be really helpful. Thanks!

A: You can ask the pharmacists while your at Cvs.

Q: What kind of food can be eaten with a sour stomach?
I was vomtting all night and I almost started to bleed through my nose. I had diarea too. What kinds of foods can I eat?

A: try some saltine crackers or chicken noddle soup in small amounts
hope you feel better

Q: Moms (or Dads) of reflux babies…….?
When did you feel comfortable enough to let your baby sleep completely flat on his back in the crib and why? Was it your baby’s age, did the symptoms seem to concede at a certain time?
concede…. I meant recede….. tired

A: when my son was eating more solids the symptoms went away so i let him sleep without his wedge under his mattress i think it was around 8 months

Q: Any advice from people with babies with reflux? Especially from people who have managed to ease the symptoms!?
Im at the end of my tether!
My 6 week old baby is currently on a hypo-allergenic formula (nutramigen) to see if a milk allergy may be causing his reflux. He has been on it for 6 days and although he seemed a bit more settled for the first couple of days he now seems to be suffering from the reflux more than ever (we stop to wind him half way through his feed and he screams so much from the pain that he then refuses to take the rest – its a real struggle and its breaking my heart to see him in so much pain). We are going to start adding infant gaviscon to his milk from this evening on our doctors advice but last time we tried gaviscon with his milk it gave him terrible painful constipation, so Im dreading making him suffer more. I just wondered what your experiences are of reflux and what you have found to be the best way of easing the pain (e.g. if a specific milk is good, etc – we are in the UK so please only suggest formulas we can get here!). We keep him upright when feeding, burp him regularly, prop his moses basket up at an angle…

He also seems to suffer from terrible belly ache that wakes him from his sleep, I think it may be colic.

A: My baby is exactly the same. I dont agree with getting a Medela special needs feeder as someone suggested as your baby does not have special needs. I have just started using Breastflow bottles from Mothercare which are fabulous I add a sachet of infant gaviscon to her formula, which is cow and gate comfort 1, and it really seems to help, I dont add the gaviscon to every feed as you are right, they get constipation so I get round it by using 5 oz water made up with 4 scoops of formula for a feed when using the gaviscon and it seems to be working. Good luck, It does get easier, my daughter is 14 weeks now and the vomitting is getting less

Q: Babies with reflux… how does the testing process go?
My twins are showing a few symptoms of reflux lately… they’re fussy unless if they’re in a specific upright position, they have bad breath, and they can’t take much at a feeding without fussing. The past couple of days both of them are eating less at each feeding, which results in them eating more often.

When you suspected your baby had reflux, how did the doctors test for it?
They’ll be 8 weeks old tomorrow

A: When we suspected my son had reflux, our pediatrician told us to try giving him Maalox 4 times a day for 2 days. It worked, so they put him on Zantac (ranitidine). When the Zantac stopped working, we switched to Prevacid, which worked well.

My other son was trickier…same start, but when it got to the point where he wouldn’t eat, he was referred to a GI doctor for a pH probe, which involves a flexible tube inserted into the stomach (through the nose) to measure the stomach pH (essentially, level of acidity) throughout the day. The pH probe was unpleasant, and isn’t used unless a kid has suspected reflux not helped by medicine or needs reflux surgery (which is very rare in typically developing children).

Good luck with your twins. If it is reflux, you all should experience some relief once it’s identified.

Q: mommys and daddys with babies with acid reflux?
what symptoms did your baby have when you thought it may be acid reflux? I think my son has it but im not sure yet. Im bringing him to the doctor (for the fifth time in his 3 weeks of life) tomorrow. Hes exorcist spitting up (only did this twice) and he is spitting up almost every burp and does not want to sleep unless he is on my or my fiances chest upright. He will occaisonally sleep on his side but not on his back. I thought he may have colic before but hes not inconsolable. He is fine as long as he is laying on us. Occasionally he will sleep in his swing also. He spits a good bit when he spits up too. Sound like acid reflux to you?

A: yes it does, my son had it so bad his esophagus would burn him & he wasn’t able to eat. he would take a couple sips then start screaming. hes been on zantac since 2 months old, also he hates being on his back…his pediatrician should me a certain way to hold him, basically holding him up right side ways, helps. but my main concern with my son was him not being able to eat, thats when it needs to be treated…i was once told all babys have acid reflux, just some have it worse.

Q: A question about reflux in babies?
Okay so I did some research and it looks alot like my son has acid reflux he has all the symptoms. So I am guessing it has been going on for about 3 weeks if not more how bad can his throat be by now without me knowing. And what happens if I go to the doctor tomorrow and my doctor tells me I am crazy but I know I am not I can’t just switch his pedi because I am waiting for his insurance to go threw so can I just stay there and insist that they give him some medicine for it?
And how soon will his throat start to repair?

A: If they say that it is not reflux. Keep pressing them. Also can you see a GI doctor? It will start right away. My son had reflux. Started when he was around 2 months old. My son was on Zantac 2x a day and Mylanta 2-3X a day. He also had cereal in the bottles to help with the spitting up. It got to the point where he was not gaining any weight. Also for the time being try keeping your baby upright for 20 minutes after each feeding and putting a small pillow under the crib mattress so that they are raised up a bit.

Q: 3 week old w/ suspected reflux…in lots of pain…?
Since birth my baby has had reflux symptoms, like spitting up then swallowing, coughing, hiccups, choking and gagging. He was 3 weeks early. It never seemed to cause him any pain, though. Now 3 days ago he started crying in pain a LOT, arching his back, sleeping poorly and making constant noise when he does, and having increased symptoms. I pump milk for him but have been using a couple bottles of formula a day. This all started the day i switched brands. Would a reaction to switching cause the pain? Yesterday I went back to only breast milk, but he’s still in pain. Does anyone know if that could be the cause and how long a reaction would last if it were the case? going to dr. tomorrow, but curious to see if anyone knows.

A: I was in the same boat with my 3 week old. it maybe colic try Brauer Natural Medicine Colic Relief. It helped me and its like i have a new baby. it also could be from changing from formula to breast. best thing to do is give him breast and only do top ups of formula. hope that helps

Q: Can babies still have reflux at 10 months?
We took her off her medicine around 6 months because we thought it was over (our pedi okayed this) and now it seems she is night waking a lot, moaning in the night and displaying the same symptoms. I called the pedi and she said to go ahead and try her on Prilosec again, but I’m just wondering how common this is? She was a VERY good sleeper before and she seems perfectly healthy, but seems uncomfy sleeping flat.

A: My daughter is 14 months old. She is on Prevacid and Reglan. She also has her formula thickened with rice cereal. She has a G-tube and has had surgery called a Nissen fundoplication to help stop reflux. Good Luck.

Q: Does this sound like reflux?
Hi,
Our son is nearly 9 weeks old and from what I have read it sounds like he has reflux.
I would be interested in hearing what other parents with babies with reflux think of his symptoms and if it sounds like it to you and if so what things can we do to help?

1. He has hiccups almost after every feed and sometimes if we lay him down flat he gets them too. He is sometimes sick with them too.

2. Most of the day he gets very painful and noisy wind (from his bottom) and will often wake up after he passes wind crying.

3.He doesnt drink as much as the books say he should be although he is putting on weight.

4. He finds it harder to sleep at night times and cries like he is in pain.

5. He is much happier and sleeps straight away if put in his rocking chair (he seems to not like laying flat).

If anyone has any insight on whether it sounds like reflux and has any suggestions to help him I would appreciate it.

A: Some of the symptoms sound like reflux, but altogether, your baby sounds more like a gassy baby than a reflux baby. However, it is possible.

But even if he does have reflux, if he is gaining weight, then your pediatrician will likely not do anything about it. As long as the child is gaining weight, then reflux is generally considered a laundry problem, not a medical problem.

Are you formula feeding or breastfeeding? For either gas or reflux, breastfeeding is better, so if he’s on formula, you might want to relactate to help him…it’s never too late.

If he’s gassy (which you say he is), be sure to burp him well after feedings. You can also try Mylicon drops. Some parents say they don’t help at all, others swear by them…it just depends on your baby.

You can also try a different type of bottle/nipple if you won’t breastfeed…some babies swallow less air with certain bottles/nipple shapes.

Regardless, if he is happier sleeping semi-upright like in his swing, then let him sleep there. It doesn’t matter where a baby sleeps, as long as they DO sleep, so let him sleep however he is most comfortable (within reason…don’t increase the risk of SIDS obviously).

If you really want him to sleep in his crib, you can get a crib wedge at a baby store for about $20. It basically elevates one side of the crib a little so he’s not completely flat.

Q: Mommies with babies with infant reflux can you please help me?
My son is 7 weeks old and has infant reflux. We took him to the doc yesterday and she agreed with us and with the symptoms I told her he had and she put him on Zantac. She also said if that I could put a half teaspoon of rice cereal in his bottle to coat his stomach as well, but I haven’t tried that yet. My questions are if you little one has reflux how do you get them to calm down when they’re having a fit while or after feedings? Also what did your doc put your little one on or suggest you do. Did Zantac or cereal work for your little one? I just feel so bad for my little guy and want to try and help him in any way. Thanks mommies!!!

A: Sorry, this will be long, but I have a lot to tell you!
My baby had such severe reflux that she actually stopped gaining weight for a while.

There’s no a whole lot that can be done to help reflux. And it’s usually not really a problem except for extra laundry. It’s caused by a little flap on top of the stomach that’s supposed to stay closed when the stomach is churning. In babies with reflux, it doesn’t work right or it’s not fully formed yet.

Zantac is an acid reducer. It does not stop the reflux at all. It simply reduces the acid in the stomach so that when the baby refluxes some of their milk, it doesn’t burn their esophagus as much. This can help with the crying and protect their esophagus. I used it as needed.

Rice cereal is a stupid idea in my opinion. It doesn’t “coat” the stomach, and even if it did, that wouldn’t make any difference. It isn’t the stomach that’s causing the pain, it’s the food when it comes up into the esophagus. Cereal or not, the little flap is still going to be the same, so it’s not going to stop the refluxing.

Some doctors will suggest adding cereal or other solids to try to thicken the food in their stomach to make it harder to reflux back up. The problem is that if you do that, you have to add a LOT of solids in order to make it thick enough to stay down a little better. Which means that the baby won’t take as much breastmillk/formula.

This is bad because there are no solids that have the right vitamins/minerals that a baby needs. Solids shouldn’t decrease their breastmilk/formula intake until they are a year old, and in order to make it thick enough to stay down better, you’d have to feed a lot of solids, and that would definitely decrease their breastmilk/formula intake.

I would never have even considered giving cereal or any other solid to a 7 week old. I started solids at 4 months because of my doctor’s urging. It didn’t do anything for the reflux, it only made her spit up in different colors. And the solids, even just rice cereal, made it burn even more when she refluxed because I think the stomach made more acid to digest the solids.

If you are breastfeeding, keep doing that. If you’re not, you can consider relactating. Breastfeeding will NOT stop or even reduce the reflux, but breastmilk is digested much quicker so there is less time for it to be refluxed, and it doesn’t burn the esophagus nearly as much when it comes up. Not to mention all the other health benefits of it. But again, it’s not a cure all…it won’t stop the reflux.

What I did was breastfeed on demand, give Zantac whenever she was fussy (very often in the beginning). I kept her upright and as still as possible after feedings. I used a crib wedge to elevate the head of the mattress a little to keep her less flat in there. Those all seemed to help a little, but she still spit up 50+ times a day.

As long as your son is gaining weight, then you don’t have anything to worry about. The Zantac will reduce the acid so his esophagus won’t be burned so much, which should cut down on his crying.

Feedings are hard, because the milk is refluxing as they are trying to eat and it’s painful. You can play around with the timing of the Zantac (as long as you don’t give it more often than prescribed!) in regards to when he eats and see if it helps.

You can also try feeding much smaller amounts more often instead of larger milk feeds if your baby will go along with that. My baby simply wouldn’t stand for that and would scream her little head off if I didn’t let her nurse as much as she wanted to! In any case, burp often, as gas bubbles will increase the reflux.

Being outside always seemed to soothe her, so when she was really miserable, I’d take her outside. I even nursed her outside sometimes.

When she stopped gaining weight, I followed my instincts after checking with her doctor, which was to start waking her in the night to nurse. I noticed that she didn’t spit up as much when she was asleep because she was not moving around so much, so I figured if I woke her twice to feed, that would be two good feeds that she would actually keep down. It did the trick and she started gaining again.

The doctor also prescribed Reglan, which did nothing for her reflux and made her shaky. It was downright scary what that stuff did to her, and I really wish I would have read about it before giving it to her. Nasty stuff.

Anyway, nearly all will outgrow reflux by one year old. The vast majority show a marked improvement when they begin sitting up on their own. My own experience was that the reflux was pretty much completely gone by the time she was 8 months or so.

Good luck! It’s a hard road with reflux, but time will take care of it. I know that’s no consolation when your baby is in pain though

Q: Does The NAP NANNY Help With Infant Reflux?
thinking of buying this today as I am so tired of watching my little 3 week old girl seem to battle reflux. Thank goodness she doesn’t cry. I have heard if they aren’t spitting up after each feeding or crying in pain then it isn’t reflux. Her symptoms are she seems to be choked up and can tell something is coming up but she is fighting to swallow it and keep it down. Also lots of squirming and grunting in sleep, not sure if that is reflux or just nb behavior.
**Does This Sound Like Reflux?
**DOES THE NAP NANNY HELP BABIES WITH REFLUX?
thank you!!!

A: I am no pediatrician, however I just had my son 4 weeks ago on Monday and it sounds to me that both of our children have a lot in common. He is being watched for acidic reflux as my doctor had informed me that they cant technically diagnose it as such until the third month. My doctor also told me that over 50% of newborns have acid reflux symptoms in the first few months of birth. I thought about him having this in the very beginning of my pregnancy though as it can be hereditary and a majority of people in my family have had it early on. I had registered for a Fisher Price seat that acts almost identical to the Nap Nanny and is much less expensive. It helps elevate your child so the aren’t lying on their back as they would in a bassinet or crib, exactly what the Nap Nanny does. The other perk of the seat is it acts as a rocker as well and conforms to their body so they still feel as if they are in your arms. I notice my son wanting to just be held because he is in so much pain and after 3 hours of holding him I get very exhausted so it has done WONDERS for me. I don’t know if you have spoken to your pediatrician about the issue with your daughter yet but here are a few things I have done and a few things my doctor had told me could help with our issue and have successfully worked:
1) While feeding burping between 1/2-1 oz that way they do not have as much spit up or vomit after feedings.
2) Depending on if her reflux acts up after different times (my sons is the worst right before bedtime and waking up in the morning) put cereal mix in their formula. Some pediatricians will frown on that however mine had given me the o.k. as we found that it worked. He eats 4 oz with one tsp cereal one tsp dark karo (to prevent constipation). the cereal gives them substance and in turn eats the acid.
3)obviously elevating your child when they sleep. if possible during the day keep them on their sides (rotating) so they dont have a flat back of the head.

I really hope this helps and may save you some money. I feel for you watching her go through pain I have been a wreck watching my son hurt. Its so hard when you cant take their pain away.

Good Luck and CONGRATULATIONS on your new baby girl

Q: Does your baby have these symptoms?
Hi there. My 12 weeks old baby boy has been diagnosed with acid reflux 6 days ago. There was no tests done, our Ped diagnosed it by me describing his symptoms and he prescribed Zantac, which I heard is the common way of treating reflux.

My son seems to get slightly better since he started medication, however all his symptoms still exist, he still spits up when burps and then re-swallow partially digested food, gives bitter face while re-swallowing, vomits(once every 3 days), nauseous (throws up but nothing comes out), coughs, chews partially digested food, he also started running diaherreha since he started Zantac (now he poops about 6-8 times a day), waking up cranky and grumpy from time to time(before he would wake up in a happy mood, smiled and had baby talk all the time).

I took him back to the doctor but he didn’t think there’s anything seriously wrong with him as he seems gaining weight well. But as a mom I knew there’s something I just don’t know what and I want him to feel better. Does your baby have all these symptoms and what this might be?
By the way I breastfeed and my baby is still on Zantac, I have no idea how long it would be.

A: My children didn’t have it, but my friend’s son did, it is common. He had to grow out of it, but medication and changing his formula helped him get better. She didn’t breastfeed him, he was formula-fed. However, since you are breastfeeding, keep doing that, because breast milk is easier digested by babies than formula is, which is supposed to cause minimal reflux. Keep treating him for acid reflux, but follow the steps on this page to see if this helps take his crankiness and frequent pooping away or at least minimizes it. This page goes over positions to hold your baby in while feeding, positioning baby for sleep to minimize the acid affecting him, offering smaller, frequent feedings throughout the day, etc. http://www.parenting.com/article/Baby/Care/Ask-Dr-Sears-Coping-With-Babys-Acid-Reflux

Also, what is your diet? Do you consume a lot of acidic foods/drinks? If so, you may want to cut down on that, because that can affect baby as well, since you’re breastfeeding. Follow that guide on the web page I gave you, and make sure your diet doesn’t consist of a lot of acidic stuff, and keep him on the Zantac. If doing all that still doesn’t seem like it’s taking care of the problem, you may want to talk to his doctor again and see if it’s something else. If it’s not acid reflux, it may just be that he’s very gassy or has colic, which is easily treatable. Good luck.

Q: Acid reflux?
My baby had the following symptoms since birth (now he is 7 mo) but doctors in our country don’t say anything about reflux or its possible treatment, all they say is that babies have horizontally positioned stomach and the opening muscle is weak and they have these symptoms and they will grow out of it. But I see my baby suffer a lot, so I want to know whether his symptoms show that he has reflux. If he does I want to give him Zantac.
He: sometimes spits up after eating,
fusses and when held upright burps a lot
hiccups a lot, usually starts after a burp
arches his back when being fed
refuses to sleep, arching his back, wakes up a lot during the night
he refused to eat from 2 mo till he was 5mo (I forced during that period)
now eats only 3.5-5 oz per time (25 oz per day), little appetite
he is little underweight
Please, help me to determine whether he has reflux. I repeat, I went to lots of doctors they don’t know about reflux.
Thank you all for replying, I don’t know how to rate though
My son is formula fed, I switched many different and this Korean one is the one he likes and eats. I took him to pediatricians, they would only say something about child’s stomach characteristics. What is reflux anyway? What exactly will I see if I take him to upper GI? Also, what is the exact name of Efamil AR and Gentle ease, I looked it up and there were soo many different Efamils.
Thank you!

A: For my son I used the Enfamil A.R. Lipil which worked very good for him.

Q: help with my 5 week old..acid reflux?
I posted a question last week about fussiness, but now am wanting to know if something could be wrong with her? I have been looking into acid reflux and have noticed some of the symptoms in my baby such as being a fussy eater, poor sleeping habis, frequent hiccups, gagging, some wet burps, and spitting up an hour or more after feeding. My little girl doesnt seem content, she seems to be very unhappy. I understand that she is still really young (5weeks), and I am a first time mom and want to know if this is normal behavior or something I should seek her pediatrician about. I feel stupid calling and saying I have a crying and fussy baby. Another thing I did was switch her formula from Enfamil lipil, to Enfamil gentlease for fussy and gassy babies. Honestly, the gas she had seems to be less but she seems more fussy on this formula. Please help!! Any suggestions would be useful at this point

A: This is really something you should talk to her doctor about. You may feel silly, but honey that’s what they’re there for. If you want try getting her some Mylicon drops and a soy formula (Similac Isomil is what we use) and this may help her out. My son used to spit up a lot and was very gassy. The formula helped out most, but the drops were lifesavers!!

But yeah, call her doctor and then they can properly diagnose acid reflux if that’s what she has…if not they may just recommend a soy formula.

Q: baby reflux problems?
Hi,

My 8 week old suffers with reflux, Just recently my HV advised me to see my doc and request Gaviscon which I did and my LO has been on this now for 2 weeks. He now hardly ever spits up anything now and the acidic sickyness he used to suffer with has stopped. however he still has some symptoms ie arching his back when feeding, occasionally crying on the bottle and generally being uncomfortable when put down on his back. has anyone else found this to be the case? if so is there anything else i can do to help him?? one other thing he does which terrifies me is he retches alot and often in his sleep – nothing comes up, my doc didnt seem phased by this but i dont like it and have not heard of this before – please can anyone put my mind at ease or is this something i should be worried about??? I am waiting to see a specialist…no appointment yet though (

Thanks

A: I would also reccommend a soy formula and putting a little rice cereal in the bottle. That is what the doc reccommended for my daughter and it helped her.

Q: I have a 10 weeks baby who has mild reflux?
I say mild because, he can sleep on flat surface after a 10-20 minutes break on the bouncer and doesnt mind lifting of his legs while changing diapers (actually enjoys it). However, sometimes he cannot be breastfed in Cradle position (only one i know). This happens mostly in the evenings (all evenings actually). He seems hungry and as soon as i hold him for feeding (cradle position) he starts crying and shows all symptoms of reflux. He cannot be consoled unless i hold him upright. I dont think i have access to buy he wedge (dont live in the USA). So want to know if there is any other positions i can try when he is so distressed.
I am afraid this is making him feed less. fewer times and shorter durations as sometimes he gets distressed while feeding and needs to be held up or put in a bouncer. after that often doesnt resume his feeding

A: Assuming you are breastfeeding you should try to breastfeed at least every 2 hours. More often is better. Breastmilk is a natural antacid. And realistically it is biologically normal for human infants to eat 2-4 times an hour.[1]

Also you should try some different feeding positions, it will become easier as he has better head control. You can try sitting him completely upright to feed. Or you can lean over on a pillow and try to get him on more of an angle, probably about 30 degrees is good.
Here are some pics:

http://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/fast-letdown.html#positioning

If your baby sleeps in a crib the SAFEST way to incline the crib is to place books under two of the legs. This is safer than putting anything on or under the mattress.

Also crying makes reflux worse so try to limit it.

Also read this, it helped me:

http://www.askdrsears.com/html/10/T106000.asp

However GER should happen throughout the day, if it is only in the evening it sounds more like colic. In any case nursing more often, different nursing positions and inclining the crib have no negative side effects so it certainly can’t help.

For more information about: reflux disease visit the Acide Reflux Disease and GERD site AcidRefluxDiseaseGERD.com today.

Q: Does anyone have a natural remedy for acid reflux disease?
I ask this simply due to the fact that I don’t have the money for prilosec-otc or other otc’s. My first doctor appointment (I just moved to area) is at the end of the week. Even if my doctor prescribes me meds, I may not be able to afford the co-pay due to a limited income. Any help in this arena will be helpful.

A: A table spoon of baking soda in about 3 oz of water does good for me. Also, you can buy (30) 75 mg tablets of generic Zantac for $3.00. No prescription.

Q: How can I prevent acid reflux disease?
I need to know all of the information out there about this disease. It is hard for me to sleep at night without getting ill. I drink a lot of coffee and pepsi which does not help the situation. But I NEED HELP (INFO) asap!!

A: i take antacid heartburn medication that i buy from the store and it has a percent of a dosage in each pill and it helps me out from gettin acid reflux
i quit drinking soda eating to much tomatos and carbinated drinks because i hate that “i think im goin to be sick feeling” every night before i go to bed especially when im sleeping

Q: which is better for acid reflux disease?
I currently take prilosec at 2x a day and found that it doesn’t always work. I even got a wedge to put under my pillow and that works but for flareups, is pepcid a/c better than prilosec and is it an OTC?

A: Pepcid is a H2 receptor antagonist. This means it works by blocking the production of stomach acid by your stomach’s parietal cells. Other H2 receptor antagonists are Tagament, Zantac, and Axid.

Prilosec is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). PPI’s block an enzyme in your stomach wall that produces acid. Other PPIs are AcipHex, Nexium, and Protonix.

Most physicians feel that PPI’s are more effective than H2 receptor antagonists. The best way to find out what works for you is to try the medication for at least 2 weeks.

I take Nexium for my GERD (acid reflux). AcipHex works for me also, but my insurer will not pay for it. If you have insurance, you may want to ask your physician for a prescription for one of the non-OTC PPI medications.

The problem with putting a wedge under your pillow is that it can simply make you sleep in a “bent” position, worsening your reflux by putting pressure on your esophageal sphincter http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/2006/0209/6867277.jpg. Some people raise the head of their bed with “bed risers” (search for an image of these if you’re interested).

You may also want to read about a “GERD diet”, which will help you avoid foods that can worsen your reflux. http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/2006/0209/6867277.jpg, http://www.midwestgastro.com/diet_nutrition/GERD.html

Q: can I have acid reflux disease if I don’t have heartburn?
I have sporadic sore throat and coughing, chest pains, nausea, and hoarseness. Usually the symptoms occur seperately or in pairs. Could I have acid reflux disease?

A: Acid reflex disease can be very serious. It can cause alot of problems including gastrointestinal bleeds and aspiration pneumonia. I sounds like that is what you might have. BUT, see your doctor first. Don’t treat your self. OTC medications can have serious side effect when mixed with other medications. Just because it is OTC does not mean it is always safe to take. You may had H pylori of another problem that needs to be treated.

Q: Is acid reflux disease and diarrhea be related? ?
I just got diagnosed with acid reflux disease. I have not started any medication for it yet. However, I have constant. diarrhea and/or loose stools. Is acid reflux and diarrhea related?

A: Yes, it could be related because it is all a part of your digestive system. I have acid reflux and IBS. Make sure you tell the Dr. who diagnosed that you have the combination because chronic diahhrea can also be symptoms of other health issues. Constant diahrrea is serious and inconvenient. I am on treatment as my acid reflux was causing more serious erosions in my throat. I highly reccommend you ask your Dr. Good Luck!

Q: Could my 4 year old have acid reflux disease?
He always says his stomach and throat hurts, but only when hes lying down about to go to bed. I do know hes not saying that just to stay up because I can tell when he is fibbing. Also, he didnt actually throw up but spit some out once one day and once another day. He is very energetic lately too, but still doesnt seem himself.

I already made a doc apt. I know, but in the meantime, what could this be?

A: It could be anything and nothing.Good luck with your doctor’s appointment.

Q: What are the warning signs you may have Acid Reflux Disease?
i think i may have it, what should i look for before consulting my doctor?

A: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, Acid Reflux Desease, GERD are the same thing. My symptoms started five years ago. Extreme pain in the middle of my chest but no other symptoms I’ve tried not to pay much attention until one day suddenly I couldn’t breathe. Just the tiniest amount of air came through my throat. Well, I’ve had to calm myself down fast. It probably lasted a little over two minutes but in my mind I felt I will suffocate. This incident occured approx. 8-9 times including at night. I never regurgitated anything, it did not happen after I ate my meal, so my doctor thaught it’s probably psychosomatic/ crazy/ on my part. I went to see another one. Prescribed Losec 20 mg daily and in five years never had one recurrance. Perhaps my story does not fit the criteria for GERD but it’s a true story and there are always exceptions.

Q: What is best treatment for acid reflux disease besides Nexium?

A: Omeprazole, and lanzoprazole are the best medicines for that. You can try the OTC version of Prilosec.

Of course, it is always recommendable to get a doctor’s opinion.

Q: Im afraid to take my medicine for acid reflux disease what should I do.?
I take prevacid it works but has terrible side effects and upon further research I have found that it shuts down the most vital important function of your body and pretty much will kill you. It turns of pepsin an acid the turns protein into usable amino acids without this breakdown the body will slowly die muscles cannot get repaired bones tissue wont get restores osteoporosis will set it in and many vitamin deficiencies as well.

A: you don’t really need expensive chemicals that could kill you- do you?
try researching natural alternatives and lifestyle suggestions (not lying down flat after eating, no tight belts around stomach etc…)

Q: do u know that tomato sauce used in pizza ,spagetthi can make acid-reflux disease and it can turn into cancer?
its true because this is story of my friend
i dont think that tomato sauce is made of real tomatos

A: I assume you have a real link to prove this and not some location like The Onion

Q: Can enlarged adenoids be mistaken for asthma or acid reflux disease?

A: As far as disease is concerned: Asthma/ Reflux and adenoids are different problems, But some of the symptoms can be common like- Change in voice/ snoring/ breathlessness etc. but many features are different (like reflux causes heartburn, pain in abdomen/ Asthma will cause just breathlessness etc.) so any good doctor should not get confused between them.
Best wishes

Q: I have acid reflux disease any suggestions to help it stop?
I quit meat and am tryin to wean off of dairy , i take medicine and i have my bed on an incline

A: You must have a severe case, sounds like you’ve been to the dr. I used to have a lot of stomach problems and I just started getting off things one at a time till I got relief. Found out my problem was carbonated beverages. Except for 2-3 beers a week I don’t drink any more of them. That stopped the reflux, then I have had trouble with constipation so I did what you are doing get off red meat and dairy. Yogurt and water along with fiber pills, keeps me going and feeling good.

Q: I have really bad acid reflux disease?
what can protect my back teeth from stomach acid? It turns my teeth really yellow, my dentist recommened this stuff but it is really expensive, i was wondering if there were any home remedies, or cheaper stuff on the market?

A: I would recommend Ranitidine at a 150mg dose before bed. I have a few other tips to help you out also.

Q: Can acid reflux disease be controlled with alkali solutions?

A: try taking charcoal they sell the edible kind in most places.

Q: Is stomach ulcer different from acid reflux disease?
Are those two different diseases? Are they related? what are they and if they are different, what symptom makes them different?

Just trying to figure something out. A bit confused about this plz help>

A: Yes they are different. I have acid reflux disease..

Acid reflux has more to do with your esophagus. It’s just acid backing up from your stomach. You can get heartburn and indigestion. I’ve had to deal with it so much that i’ve gotten my esophagus stretched because of scar tissue build up.. it gets to the point where I can’t swallow any food and hardly any liquid.

A stomach ulcer is loss of the gastric lining in your stomach. Some people think they get heartburn or indigestion from it but its your stomach that’s burning. Usually they can bleed and you have to get part of the stomach removed to get rid of it.
