Q: reflux????????
MY BABY WAS PREMATURE AND HAS BEEN SEEING A GASTROENTEROLOGIST FOR REFLUX SHE HAS HAD A ENSCOPY PROCEDURE , A UGI X-RAY, HER FORMULA HAS BEEN CHANGED ABOUT 5 TIMES, WE’VE ADDED CEREAL IN HER FORMULA, AND EVEN BABY FOOD, SHE HAS ONLY GAINED 2 OUNCES IN 3 WEEKS AND THAT IS NOT NORMAL SHE SHOULD BE GAINING MORE. IF ANYONE HAS EVER BEEN THROUGH ALL THIS CAN YOU TELL ME WANT ELSE CAN BE DONE, OH YEAH SHE”S EVEN BEEN THROUGH 6 DIFFERENT PRESCRIPTIONS SHE IS NOW ON AXID AND IT DOESN’T SEEM TO HELP AND SHE IS STILL VOMITTING ALL THE TIME. THANKS FOR YOU THOUGHTS.
My daughter is now 4 months old
A: I have an acquaintance who went through severe reflux with her little one. The baby wasn’t able to eat solids until well after her first birthday, she had developed an oral aversion because of all the pain associated with eating. The child had to have G-button surgery, and had an ostomy bag for a while. Severe reflux is very difficult for both baby and family to deal with and I know you must be so worried for your little one.
http://www.infantrefluxdisease.com is a good resource for information and they also have an online community/chatboard for the parents of infants with GERD. There’s a lot of good support there. Here’s a page from that site with info on complications from GERD: http://infantrefluxdisease.com/babies-with-gerd-complications.php
I send good thoughts for you and your baby-
Q: How did your reflux baby do on whole milk?
Emma is seven months old and is really doing much better about her reflux. She went from spitting up dozens of times a day to now just doing it every few days. Anyways how do reflux babies do when it is time to put them on whole milk (I already know it is twelve months, just thinking ahead)? Emma has done fine with yogurt and cheese.
A: My daughter who was a reflux baby did well, but she didn’t start till she was 12 months and not having Reflux problems anymore. However, for some reason, many reflux babies have constipation issues and my daughter was very constipated by the milk at first. We had to slowly transition her to it (she is a breastfed baby, I don’t know if that makes a difference.)
Q: What if reflux, vomiting and gastric pain continue despite treatment? What might a gastroenterologist do?
I have been taking Omeprazole and have suffered gastric problems for over 9 weeks and continue to have a problem with reflux and am sometimes actually sick. What can I do? Have I any hope of it healing up as I,m beginning to wonder if it will. Do any doctors know if it will soon get better as I,m fed up of being sick and its ruining my life.
A: A gastroenterologist will perform EGD – esophagogastroduodenoscopy.
It is a diagnostic endoscopic procedure that visualizes the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract.
Vomiting that does not go away, signs of heartburn (esophagus & gastric pains), GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) are some few indications for doctors to perform EGD.

Q: What are the sympthoms of infants reflux?
I suspect my baby to have reflux. She is suffering already from terrible colic and gas but i think that also she might have reflux. She is not sleeping for sometimes 15-20 hours . She is trying to sleep but waking up after a minute. When she finally fall a sleep i can see she is strugelling. Something is bothering her. I have impression that milk she drunk is comming back to throat and she is swallowing it again. Is it possible?
A: Another poster was right on: the very best of parenting tools we mom’s have is our gut! You think something is wrong /w her…off to pediatrician!
Only symptom ever shared with me was by NICU nurse, “See how he’s sticking his tongue out repeatedly? Likely, he’ll have reflux or gerd.” Never happened. But….wanted to help, so:
Googling revealed several informative sites with a few suggestions: add a bit of rice cereal to formula; smaller meals but more often; hold (or place) baby in a more upright position for 30 minutes after feeding; NONE OF THESE SITES RECOMMENDED putting baby onto tummy…not one. (My babies always slept on tummies…but, then…we didn’t know then what we know now…they’re 21 & 24…that “NICU” comment was relative to grandson)
BEST? Your Mommy Knowledge + your pediatrician’s medical degree! You don’t say how old she is, but if she’s sometimes only sleeping 4 out of 24 hours, something is truly going on!!
Good luck to what must be two very tired gurlies!
Q: Can a reflux stream have a greater mass flow than the feed?
I am designing a process to create acetaldehyde from ethanol. The unconverted ethanol from the reactor is recycled and run through the reactor again. After performing my mass balance, the amount of ethanol in the reflux stream is greater than the amount in the feed stream. Is this possible? Also, my conversion of ethanol is only 45% thus I can kind of see how the reflux would gain.
Any help is appreciated.
A: This information may be helpful regarding the similar processes and what others are getting.

Q: What is the difference between reflux and distillation?
Obviously I mean reflux in the sense of the laboratory technique, not the indigestion ailment.
A: In both instances, the substance is boiling. However, in distillation you are interested in collecting (or removing) the lower boiling substances.
With reflux, the condensor is set up to return the condensed distillate to the flask. Hence, it boils perpetually and in principle never loses any liquid. In practice, there is always a slow loss.
Q: How can I incline the crib to 30 degree angle for reflux baby, without the baby slipping downwards?
My 8-week baby has reflux and I have been recommended to incline his crib. I have tried this but the baby just slides down towards the foot of the crib. How can I stop this?
A: here’s one w/ a harness:

Q: What are good foods for picky teens to eat with acid reflux?
I have acid reflux and I am a very pickey eatter and my mom doesnt know what to cook for me. I love milk products but they make me sick and I also LOVE spicy foods but they give me really bad stomaches and heartburn! Any suggestion?
A: I am also a teen with acid reflux and lactose intolerance so I feel for you. Here are some of my favorite foods that I eat a lot.
Pretzels (Favorite: Pretzel Goldfish)
Granola Bars (Quaker Chewy Bars)
Apples
Bananas
Peanut Butter
Almonds
Ice Pops / sorbet
Even if you haven’t been diagnosed with lactose intolerance try taking a lactaid pill (no prescription required) right as you start to eat dairy, it might help. Also if you are going to treat yourself to spicy food the best medicine after the fact for bad heartburn, I have found is Zantac
Q: How to get a baby with reflux to fall asleep?
My son is almost 4 months old and cries bloody murder if I lay him down in his bassinet awake because when lying down, he’s in pain from reflux. To get him to sleep we’ve been walking around with him in the Baby Bjorn, but as he gets older and more alert, I think he’s fighting sleep more. How do you get them to fall asleep if they are uncomfortable lying down? Nursing him to sleep simply doesn’t work. The swing doesn’t either, and we have the aquarium swing which was supposed to be the magic put-your-baby-to-sleep swing. Help!
A: I would ask your ped. about infant Zantac. I had the same problem with my 4 mo. old son and after being on the med for a month we’ve seen a huge difference! We now have a happy baby…..I’m saying this kid before the med. would only sleep for 30 minutes at a time because he was so miserable and would scream in pain, but now he will sleep 7 hours straight during the night! We also swaddle him tight in his receiving blankets, prop up the head of his mattress and he’s on soy formula. I heard that having your baby is a sitting position, like in the swing and car seat, puts pressure on the abdomen somehow and can make the problems worse; which I would agree with b/c before the meds my son would scream when I put him in the swing or car seat! A nurse told me to try a bouncy seat, I never got around to purchasing one. I was really hesitant to put him on meds so young, but I was desperate and both my son and I were suffering and had tried everything. It was definately worth it!!!!!
Good luck!
Q: Can I get some tips for dealing with infant reflux?
I have a 6 week old who has reflux- I worry that he is not getting enough food. I am currently using anti-reflux formula but it becomes lumpy and cannot get through his newborn teats. I attempt to keep him upright after a feed. Can you give me any more tips?
A: Hi, I have a 5 1/2 mths baby and he had infant reflux (and was a cat napper) as well. If you had a natural birth, then go and see a chiropracter as the neck/spine might be out of alignment. Our son had three treatments and it worked miracle. The chiropracter said that all babies should be checked out as birth is a stressful thing with neck/spine. We had tried Losec and that worked but the chiro is better.
With the Anti-reflux formula being lumpy, wait for the hot water to cool down, then put the formula in and stir it clockwise (or anti) so the formula doesnt clog up the teat hole. A teat with a bigger hole (eg. 4mths +) is better as the formula is thicker than the ordinary formula and it is easier for your baby to suck the thicker formula.
Raise the cot up by put in a couple of wood under the the front legs will help the baby to sleep (especially when he/she got a blocked nose from a bad cold) and a jumper underneath the mattress in the pram.
Good luck and it is all worth it in the end
Q: Can a baby without colic or reflux be given Alimentum formula?
A friend of mine is in desperate need to formula for her son and I have a bunch of cans from my son, but her son doesn’t have reflux or colic. Can he still be feed this formula? I hate to throw it away, it was really expensive and I cannot find anyone who needs it.
A: yes,,,,i had twins that were on this milk. i breastfed for 3 weeks and ran out,,,after going to formula my daughter had an awful time of it. being that there were twins,,,our dr put them BOTH on it to avoid the risk of my daughter getting milk that wasnt “hers”….it helped her tremendously and the dr said it would NOT hurt my son one bit. there was more risk in having 2 different milks and the risk of HER gettin the wrong one than him gettin the alimentum. there should be NO problem with handing down the milk.
Q: How do you know when a baby has congestion reflux?
My baby is snorts an breathes like he has something in his nose mostly when hes eating or is done eating…does this mean he has congestion reflux? how you do know when a baby has congestion reflux?
A: my daughter does the same thing. I’m unsure how old your baby is…mine: 5 weeks. Our pediatrician suggested that the milk may be too much for her to digest so he switched her to Gentlease Enfamil. We will begin using it tomorrow and hope that solves the issue. Consult with your child’s pediatrician bc each baby is different. But the conditions you’re describing are very similar to my daughter’s.
Good Luck.
Q: How to measure the extent of reflux for my baby ?
My one year old baby boy still has silent reflux even after taking prevacid for 4 months. The GI is not helpful as in, always keeps saying that we should continue with it. Is there a way to know whats happening within my baby’s gastrointestinal system?
We already had a barium swallow done and it was after that the prevacid was started. Are there any other ‘ultrasound like’ tests that can tell us if the prevacid has helped at all?
A: First, define “silent reflux,” is it Linda Blair in The Exorcist or Frat guy at a party?
Is he your first?
Are you caucasian? (trust me, it’s relevant)
If you answered a, yes, yes, then he may have pyloric stenosis. It’s common in first-born white males, I don’t know why, it just is. It’s a big problem but an easy fix, minor surgery with a couple days of recovery. The only caveat is you said he’d already had an upper GI (listed here as barium swallow) so I’m not sure. If you’ve already heard this as a possibility and it was dismissed because of the upper GI, then no worries, but you should mention it at his next appointment.
Q: What will a doctor prescribe for a reflux baby?
I’m taking my almost 5 month old son to the doctor this week as I am pretty sure that he has reflux. Just wondering what, if anything, will the doctor prescribe for him?
Thanks!
A: my son as gerd he was first prescribe zantac it didnt work now hes on prevacid in between time hes had endoscope done and a gastric emptying hes is so bad its causing him not to grow im to the point where i feel like hes just going to have to grow out of it and also they put on a special formula called elecare did u barely start to notice are have it been going on
Q: What is good for a breastfeeding mother to eat if her infant has acid reflux?
My daughter is 4 weeks old and has acid reflux and I feel like I am starving. Can anyone give me ideas on what I can eat, I am currently avoiding dairy and citrus foods. So I am eating potatoes, bread, pasta and pears. So if anyone has been thought on this and can give me an idea of a diet that would be great. Seriouse answers only please, thanks.
A: Unfortunately, it is trial and error. Every baby is different. Just like what causes you heartburn won’t affect someone else, and vice versa. I had to stay away from anything that had tomatos when I breastfed my daughter. I couldn’t eat pizza, marinara sauce, chili, no raw tomatoes, cooked tomatoes, etc. Experiment with foods. Eat bland plain foods for 2 out of 3 meals until you can pinpoint what in the “3rd” meals is causing her acid reflux to flare up.
